OBJECTIVE: Thrombolysis is effective in ischemic stroke patients, but some factors influence its benefit. Previous infections could increase the risk of ischemic stroke by an activation of systemic inflammation. We analysed the influence of previous infections and Chlamydia pneumoniae serology on functional outcome in thrombolysed stroke patients.
METHODS: Consecutive thrombolysed stroke patients admitted during calendar year 2011 were analysed. Demographics, vascular risk factors, clinical and aetiological data were registered. Standardised blood tests were collected acutely for each patient

Infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae cause several respiratory diseases, such as community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis. Here, we present an integrated non-targeted metabolomics analysis applying ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry and ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry to determine metabolite alterations in C. pneumoniae-infected HEp-2 cells. Most important permutations are elaborated using uni- and multivariate statistical analysis, logD retention time regression and mass defect-based network analysis. Classes of metabolites showing high variations u

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most common bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections. CT infections are strongly associated with risk-taking behavior. Recommendations for testing have been implemented in many countries. The effectiveness of the screening programs has been questioned since chlamydia rates have increased. However, the complication rates including pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal factor infertility, and tubal pregnancy have been decreasing, which is good news. The complication rates associated with CT infection have clearly been over-estimated. Genetic predispositio

The determination of Chlamydia antibodies in serum is unsuitable for diagnosing infertility in men. The determination of secretory IgA in seminal plasma would seem to be of greater relevance. Since antibodies against C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae can be detected, a species-specific test for the diagnosis of infections of the male genital tract should be used. Only at relatively high titers (> or = 1:400) do genus-specific tests agree with the species-specific micro-immunofluorescence test. Whether such values can be taken as a true indicator of a local, chronic infection remains to be inves

Pneumonias caused by atypical organisms usually have extra-pulmonary features. Chlamydial pneumonia often starts with hoarseness and fever, and respiratory tract symptoms may not appear for days. Mycoplasmal pneumonia may manifest with ear pain and a nonproductive cough. Legionnaires' disease presents with high fevers and central nervous system and gastrointestinal abnormalities. Diagnosis of chlamydial infection is accomplished with serologic testing. Patients are unresponsive to erythromycin treatment and should be started on empirical doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin) therapy. The presence of

OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge of primary care physicians about Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection and its management.
DESIGN: Self-administered questionnaire comprising direct questions and hypothetical cases.
PARTICIPANTS: All 108 general and family practitioners on the north shore of Vancouver were sent the questionnaire; 79 (73%) responded.
RESULTS: There was a reasonable level of knowledge in many areas, particularly among the physicians who had graduated more recently than the others. Virtually all stated that they have access to chlamydial diagnostic testing, and most ind

The incidence of urogenital chlamydia infections among selected patients in Kumasi, Ghana was evaluated using an immunofluorescent monoclonal antibody technique. Chlamydia trachomatis was identified in 4 of 110 patients presenting for prenatal care, 2 of 55 female patients with infertility and 6 of 15 males with acute urethritis. The findings demonstrate that C. trachomatis is a frequently identified pathogen among male patients presenting with symptoms of acute urethritis; however, the incidence of chlamydia infections among asymptomatic patients is relatively low.

Chlamydia trachomatis has emerged as the most common sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen in the United States and is now recognized to cause substantial morbidity. To determine the economic consequences of chlamydial infections in the United States, we analyzed data from local, state, and national sources. We estimate that C trachomatis infections cost Americans over $1.4 billion per year in direct and indirect costs. Chlamydial infections in women account for 79% of this cost, although men and infants are also affected. Three fourths of the total cost is due to sequelae of untreated, unco

During a 2 1/2-year period, we studied 386 University of Washington students with acute respiratory disease, to determine whether a Chlamydia psittaci strain, here designated TWAR, is an important respiratory pathogen. Serologic evidence of recent TWAR infection was found in 13 students, and the organism was isolated from 8 of these. TWAR infection occurred in 12 percent of the students who had pneumonia (9 of 76), 5 percent of those with bronchitis (3 of 63), and 1 percent of those with pharyngitis (1 of 150). The TWAR infections occurred throughout the study period. Pharyngitis, often accomp

Rapid antigen detection methods have great potential value in managing sexually transmitted gonococcal and chlamydial infections. Ideally, such tests should be rapid, technically simple, inexpensive, accurate, and applicable to all sites of infection commonly sampled (cervix, urethra, pharynx). For gonorrhea, the Gram stain fulfills these criteria in men with symptomatic urethritis, but lacks sensitivity when used at other sites or in asymptomatic patients. Antigen detection for gonorrhea would thus be of greatest value in 1) the diagnosis of gonococcal cervical infections in women with mucopu

The value of cultural and serological procedures in diagnosing gonococcal and chlamydial infections was investigated in 85 women who had provisional diagnoses of pelvic inflammatory disease. The correlation between certain clinical variables and the absence or presence of such infections was also studied. In 46 the diagnosis of acute salpingitis was verified by laparoscopy. The laboratory and clinical findings in the patients with acute salpingitis were compared with those in the remaining 39 women in whom laparoscopy did not show signs of inflammation. Salpingitis was considered to be gonococ

PURPOSE: This study investigated the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, co-infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and associated risk factors in a cohort of sexually active young women enrolled in an ongoing trial on HPV vaccination at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO, Milan, Italy).
METHODS: Cervical samples were collected from 591 girls (median age 18.8 years) at the beginning of their sexual activity. At the time of sample collection, 354 women had not yet been vaccinated, and 237 women had been vaccinated for at least 12 months. All samples were analyzed through a mo

Chlamydia trachomatis infections are the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections with potentially debilitating sequelae, such as infertility. Mouse models are generally used for vaccine development, to study the immune response and histopathology associated with Chlamydia infection. An important question regarding murine models is the in vivo identification of murine host genes responsible for the elimination of the murine and human Chlamydia strains. RNA sequencing of the Chlamydia muridarum infected BALB/c lung transcriptome revealed that several genes with direct antichlamydial funct

Chlamydia is the most commonly notified sexually transmitted infection in Australia. Australian guidelines recommend urogenital screening in asymptomatic men and women, and rectal screening in men who have sex with men or women reporting anal sex/symptoms. International studies describe a rectal chlamydia prevalence in women of 5% to 21%. We found that in women at high risk of chlamydia, 57% (32/56) tested positive for rectal chlamydia. Of these, 97% (31/32) had concurrent urogenital chlamydia. Women with urogenital chlamydia were significantly more likely to have a positive rectal result (χ(2

In an attempt to prove the presence of intrauterine fetal chlamydial infection, sera from 26 laboring women, who tested positive for cervical chlamydial antigen in the first half of their pregnancies, and from 43 laboring women with no evidence of such infection, and sera from the cord of their delivered infants were tested for chlamydial IgA-, IgG- and IgM-specific antibodies. Nine (34.6%) of the 26 women with positive cervical infection and 5 (11.6%) of the 43 women with no identifiable cervical infection had significant antibody levels at the time of the delivery. Three of the 26 (11.5%) ba

Chlamydiae are important reproductive tract pathogens in a wide variety of animals. In humans, chronic or repeated infection of the female genital tract with Chlamydia trachomatis has been identified as a significant factor in the development of occlusive infertility or increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. The spectrum of reproductive disease recognized in sheep to be caused by Chlamydia psittaci has been primarily restricted to pregnant animals because the organism was clearly identified as a major cause of infectious abortion. However, following pregnancy failure, a chronic chlamydial infect

Today, chlamydiae are among the most frequently sexually transmitted organisms. At least 5 to 10% of young, sexually active adults, will have a florid chlamydial infection. On account of its chronic nature, the paucity of symptoms, and the difficulty in diagnosing it, this infection is still underdiagnosed. The spectrum of the manifested pathologies range from genital to abdominal lesions, to conjunctivitis, pneumonia and arthritis. On account of the specific intracellular reproduction cycle, antibiotic therapy is not always able to completely clear up the infection. Today, chlamydial infectio

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) reported in Europe. We aim to evaluate the overall prevalence of CT infection and the rate of asymptomatic infection in an STI clinic over a 5-year period. We will also discuss screening strategies with reference to attendees diagnosed with an STI and their sexual partners, and attendees with a non-infectious genital dermatosis.
METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data for all attendees at a university hospital STI clinic over a 5-year period were reviewed. Diagnosis of CT infection was made
