Arguably, the most striking geochemical distinction between Earth and the Moon has been the virtual lack of water (hydrogen) in the latter. In field-scale mass balance studies of poplar remediation of carbon tetrachloride (CT), more than 95% of the mass of CT was degraded with all of the CT chlorine accountable as chloride ion accumulation in the soil. Atmospheric loss of CT through leaf transpiration and trunk diffusion was insignificant. These findings are consistent with previously reported uptake and degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by poplar. Hydraulic conductivity and sorption coefficients for chlorinated hydrocarbons (chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethylene) were evaluated for 216 sediment samples collected across a 15 m transect and a 21 m depth interval in a contaminated aquifer near Schoolcraft, Michigan. Relationships between hydraulic conductivity, linear sorption partition coefficients, grain size classes, and spatial location were investigated using linear regression analysis and geostatistical techniques. Clear evidence of layering was found in sorption properties, hydraulic conductivity and grain sizes.

Humic acids (HA) are ubiquitous redox-active compounds of natural aquatic and soil systems. Here we studied the potential of HA as reductants for chlorinated aliphatic pollutants. To avoid artifacts potentially involved when studying chemically reduced HA, we prepared electrochemically reduced soil, aquatic and synthetic HA, and anthrahydroquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AHQDS), a model compound for hydroquinone moieties in HA. Tin oxide thin films prepared by thermal oxidation of Sn films were used for the detection of chlorinated methanes (CH2Cl2, CHCl3 and CCl4). This resulted in better chemical selectivity, sensitivity, response speed and detection limit than seen with previous detectors. The temperature dependence of the sensing of 1% CCl4 gas was studied and the best sensing behavior was observed at 300 degrees C. Chlorinated ethenes are toxic substances which are widely distributed groundwater contaminants and are persistent in the subsurface environment. Reports on the biodegradation of these compounds under anaerobic conditions which might occur naturally in groundwater show that these substances degrade very slowly, if at all. Hepatic vein thrombosis, as well as hepatocellular carcinomas, was induced in inbred C3H male and female mice ingesting 10 ppm of dieldrin, aldrin, heptachlor, or heptachlor epoxide in the diet. Thrombosis was present in 5% of mice ingesting dieldrin or aldrin and in 10.5% of mice ingesting heptachlor or heptachlor epoxide.
