BACKGROUND: The human choroid derives from the mesectoderm, except the melanocytes originating from the neuroectoderm. To date, it is unclear whether all choroidal melanocytes share the same origin or might have different origins. The purpose of this study was to screen immunohistochemically for mesenchymal elements in the adult healthy human choroid, in the malignant melanoma of the choroid, as well as in the developing human fetal choroid.
METHODS: Human choroids were obtained from cornea donors and prepared as flat whole mounts for paraffin- and cryoembedding. Globes enucleated for choroid

The management of uveal metastasis is focused on both the patient's systemic condition and the ocular condition. If there is evidence of systemic metastatic disease, then treatment of the nonocular and ocular metastatic tumors consists of chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, multiple-site radiotherapy, or observation. If there is no evidence of systemic involvement, then whole-eye treatment with chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, or, rarely, enucleation is considered. For solitary uveal metastases, plaque radiotherapy is offered, and if the tumor is small, las

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone carcinoma. Adulthood most frequent intraocular malignant tumor is choroidal metastasis; however, these are rarely related to sarcomas. There are only two OS-related choroidal metastasis cases reported in the literature, both prior to 1970.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man with a history of tibial OS, right leg amputation, and lung and brain metastases, presented with decreased vision in his right eye (OD). Ophthalmic examination revealed a best-corrected visual acuity of hand movements and a large, posterior pole, nodular, subr

PURPOSE: To report a very rare and atypical case of an elderly Caucasian female patient who developed perilesional multiple polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) as a probable complication of choroidal osteoma (CO), associated to preretinal neovascular membrane overlying the lesion.
METHODS: Observational case report.
CASE OBSERVATION: A 60-year-old Caucasian woman presented with blurred vision in her right eye (RE). Fundus examination revealed a round white-yellowish calcified deep lesion in the juxta-papillary superior area, measuring 4 disc-diameters, with well-defined scalloped margins

PURPOSE: To evaluate the retinal, peripapillary, and choroidal microvascular structures in patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET), a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by sustained thrombocytosis and an increased risk of thrombotic events, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study included 20 ET patients and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants underwent spectral-domain OCTA to assess vessel density (VD) in the superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses (SCP and DCP), radial peripapillary cap

Cadherins are a family of glycoproteins that are associated with cell adhesion mechanisms. They are divided into subclasses. The E- and P-cadherins are regarded as the epithelial subtype. Their expression has been demonstrated in many different carcinoma types. Using immunomorphological techniques, we studied the expression of E-cadherin in a series of 145 human brain tumours with the monoclonal antibody 5H9. Western blot analysis was used to confirm the immunohistochemical data. The tumour types represented were astrocytoma WHO I (n = 7), astrocytoma WHO II (n = 6), astrocytoma WHO III (n = 1

There are two different types of ocular melanocytes and melanomas. Conjunctival melanocytes are located on the surface of the eye and are exposed to visible light and UV radiation. Recently, epidemiological studies demonstrated that sunlight plays a definite role in the occurrence of conjunctival melanoma, as it does in cutaneous melanoma. Uveal melanocytes consist of the iridal melanocytes, which are exposed to visible light and UV radiation; and the ciliary body melanocytes and choroidal melanocytes, which are not exposed to light radiation. Epidemiological studies demonstrated that sunlight

INTRODUCTION: The co-existence of two independent brain tumors at the same anatomical site is rare and occurs as a "collision tumor" or "tumor-to-tumor metastasis." In intracranial location, meningioma is the most common neoplasm in such coincidences.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case involving a 31-year-old woman with a complex tumor consisting of chordoma and meningioma in the petroclival region. The patient presented with left facial numbness, ataxia, and left-sided hemiparesis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-demarcated, intradural, extra-axial tumor mas

A 28-month female with a clinical diagnosis of neurocutaneous melanosis and numerous intracranial abnormalities (including a right choroid plexus tumor and left hemimegalencephaly) presented with a rapidly expanding tumor in the left occipital cerebrum. Microscopic examination of the resected specimen revealed a myxoid mesenchymal neoplasm consisting of fusiform cells that were immunoreactive for vimentin, CD34, and P53 but no melanocyte markers. Focused amplicon deep sequencing on DNA extracted from the brain tumor and a cutaneous nevus revealed a heterozygous (c.37G>C; p.G13R) substitution i

The purpose of this literature review is to describe the various types of brain tumors that occur in the fetus, their locations, initial findings, pathology, and outcome. Data are presented that show which patients are likely to survive or benefit from treatment compared with those who are unlikely to respond. An analysis is performed on patients with fetal brain tumors that were detected prenatally by imaging studies or discovered directly after birth. The review revealed 154 fetuses presenting with brain tumors. Teratoma was the leading neoplasm. Next was astrocytoma followed by craniopharyn

Neoplasms of the third ventricle are lesions arising within the ventricular cavity, often free but more often pedunculated. True third ventricle tumours are surgically removable. In a consecutive surgical series of 580 intracranial tumours the authors operated on 27 lesions of the third ventricle, 7 of which were benign gliomas. The histological diagnosis was polar spongioblastoma in 5 cases and fibrillar subependymal astrocytoma in 2 cases. The dominant clinical features were a slowly progressive or intermittently increased intracranial pressure syndrome, and mental and visual disturbances. C
