PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess the biometry of the ciliary body in normal human eyes using ultrasound biomicroscopy.
METHODS: We evaluated 85 eyes of 85 normal subjects (35 men and 50 women), whose age ranged from 11 to 86 years (mean ± SD, 56.8 ± 20.4 years). BACKGROUND: A cyclodialysis cleft is a gap resulting from disruption of the longitudinal fibers constituting the ciliary body attachment to the scleral spur. The cyclodialysis cleft can be of traumatic or iatrogenic origin, and it may occur during intraocular surgery or as a result of a glaucoma operation. In this report we present a surgical technique to treat cyclodialysis: cyclopexy combined with phacoemulsification subluxation lens, transscleral suturing of Cionni ring, and intraocular lens implantation with iris cerclage suture.

The aim was to present a case of ciliary body melanoma treated with block resection and scleral flap rotation. 49-year old woman with ciliary body melanoma and extrascleral extension appeared in our clinic. Block resection of ciliary body melanoma and scleral flap rotation was performed and additional ruthenium brachytherapy was applied. There was no complications during surgery and follow-up. Described method can be recommended for openings in the sclera, which need emergency surgery.

A 60-year-old Asian man presented with left rubeotic glaucoma secondary to a central retinal vein occlusion. He was successfully treated with laser diode cyclophotocoagulation of the ciliary body. Nine months later he developed right progressive visual loss, headache, corneal oedema, anterior chamber cells, flare, mutton fat keratic precipitates, a swollen disc, and a minimal inferior visual field defect. A diagnosis of sympathetic ophthalmia was made, which was confirmed by characteristic findings seen on fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential significance of cAMP in the regulation of Cl(-) transport across the bovine ciliary body/epithelium (CBE).
METHODS: Fresh native bovine CBE preparation was mounted in a modified Ussing chamber. The effects of cAMP-stimulating agents on short-circuit current (I(sc)) and net (36)Cl(-) secretion were determined.

OBJECTIVE: To correlate ultrasound biomicroscopic images of iris and ciliary body melanomas with their histopathologic features.
METHODS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy was performed in 3 cases of iris melanoma and in 3 cases of ciliary body melanoma. The movement of carboxyfluorescein across the isolated iris-ciliary body of the albino rabbit was analyzed using an Ussing chamber under short-circuit conditions with carboxyfluorescein concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 microM. Morphological changes of the ciliary body epithelium in rats fed a 50% galactose diet for 10 months with or without aldose reductase inhibitor (ARI) were investigated by both light microscopic observation and measurement of cell size. We describe a new technique for the separation and isolation of nonpigmented ciliary body epithelial cells from rabbit. Excised ciliary body is incubated in a medium buffered with EGTA to a free-Ca2+ concentration of 10(-8) M, and the nonpigmented cell layer is separated from the pigmented layer by microdissection under direct visualization. Two glutathione reductases, designated GR-I and GR-II, were purified from bovine ciliary body to apparent homogeneity by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-agarose and gel filtration on Sephacryl S-200. Three cryosurgical units were compared on the basis of the ability of each unit to freeze the ciliary body of enucleated normal canine eyes. The coldest average temperatures reached were -13.4 C, -4.3 C, and -17.6 C. One of the units was then used to freeze the ciliary body in the left eye of 25 dogs for 5 minutes. Unidirectional Na+ and Cl- fluxes were determined in the isolated rabbit ciliary body under short-circuited conditions. A statistically significant net Cl- flux towards aqueous was detected in the standard bathing solution (HCO3- = 115 mM), but no net Na+ flux was demonstrated in this solution. The net Cl- flux exceeded the short-circuit current, suggesting the existence of a net flux of other ion(s). In a bathing solution containing 5 mM HCO3-, the net Cl- flux was abolished, suggesting that HCO3- in the bathing solution enhances the net Cl- flux.

The mechanical behavior of athe iris-lens-zonule-ciliary body (ILZC) system under intraocular pressure variations, measured with Scan A, is studied on a series of 20 rabbit eyes. The experiments indicate that the ILZC system behaves like a partition between the anterior and vitreous chambers and not like a supporting structural member. The observed behavior is related to previous clinical observations and to the biostructural model of the eye described in a previous paper by the authors.
