A 14-year-old girl developed fever, severe headache, vomiting, and no light perception in both eyes over a 3-day period without a previous complaint of visual or other neurologic difficulties. Neuro-ophthalmologic examination was normal apart from meningismus and blindness. Brain imaging showed ventriculomegaly and multiple enhancing nodules around the optic chiasm. Dynamic supratentorial pressure changes may differentially alter tissue pressure and intraventricular fluid pressure. To evaluate these pressures, we used a floppy cuff intracerebral catheter and an intraventricular catheter in the cat and rhesus monkey. Hydrocephalus was induced in 12-day old rats by the cisternal infusion of a concentrated kaolin suspension. We used three types of specialized micro-balloons 0.7-1.35 mm in outer diameter instead of kaolin to develop a reproducible rat model of hydrocephalus with a low experimental mortality. The micro-balloon was inserted 6 mm deep into the cisterna magna via a burr hole immediately behind the lambda. The angle of introduction was 50 degrees. We also set up kaolin-induced hydrocephalic models in 25 rats as controls.
