Epidermoid cysts are slowly growing tumors arising from invagination of the epidermis into the dermis traumatically or spontaneously. During one year 118 patients were admitted to the operative gynecological ward of Banadir Maternity Hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia, with diseases related to the practice of female circumcision. Fifty-five per cent of the patients were suffering from a dermoid cyst at the site of the excised clitoris. Thirty-six per cent had a vaginal stenosis and 9% an abscess at the site of the excised clitoris. These patients occupied the beds of the hospital for a total period of 1967 days which posed a significant constraint to the health services of the hospital.

The female vulva is an intricate structure comprising several components. Each structure has been described separately, but the interplay among them and physiologic significance remain controversial. The structures extend inferiorly from the pubic arch and include the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, vestibule, and clitoris. The clitoris is widely accepted as the most critical anatomic structure to female sexual arousal and orgasm. The female sexual response cycle is also very complex, requiring emotional and mental stimulation in addition to end organ stimulation.
