Survey of infant foods for Clostridium botulinum spores.

A total of 236 samples of infant foods, including honey, dry cereal, nonfat dry milk, evaporated milk, canned formula, and canned baby food, were collected in the New York City area and tested for the presence of Clostridium botulinum spores. Methods for recovery of spores were validated using foods spiked with 4 spores/mL or g. None of the products contained C. botulinum spores, indicating that their incidence in these commercial foods is not widespread. This limited study did not identify any food types that could be suspected of being involved in the transmission of infant botulism.

Fluorescent-antibody reagents for the identification of Clostridium botulinum.

Fluorescent-antibody reagents were prepared against vegetative cells of representative strains of each physiological group and toxin type of Clostridium botulinum known to have caused botulism in humans. A fluorescent-antibody reagent was also prepared for C. botulinum type G, which has been isolated from autopsy specimens but which has not clearly been implicated in botulism. These fluorescent-antibody reagents were evaluated against 200 strains of C. botulinum and 64 strains of other clostridia. Each reagent reacted with at least a 2+ intensity with all of the strains in its same toxin type …

Clostridium botulinum type C in the Mersey estuary.

Nineteen of 98 samples of mud or sand taken from the Mersey estuary in 1981 contained Clostridium botulinum type C, the organism almost always responsible for botulism in water birds. In the Dungeon and Score Bank areas, where many dead and dying birds were found during the period September-December 1979, almost half the samples contained type C. Most of the positive samples were essentially muddy rather than sandy. The findings do not prove that botulism contributed to the 1979 mortality but are nonetheless thought-provoking, particularly because type C--unlike type B--is by no means ubiquito…

Clostridium perfringens: an unusual case of septic arthritis.

Anaerobic joint infections may be a more common occurrence than previously reported. A nine-year-old with a septic knee due to Clostridium perfringens following a puncture wound was seen in the emergency department. Diagnosis was established by isolating the organism from an anaerobic synovial fluid culture. The patient was treated successfully with open drainage and parenteral penicillin. This case illustrates the necessity for specifically requesting anaerobic cultures on synovial fluid of patients with acute septic monoarthritis.

Susceptibility of Clostridium botulinum to thirteen antimicrobial agents.

A total of 224 strains of Clostridium botulinum (including isolates from 14 patients with infant botulism and 4 with wound botulism) and 15 strains of C. sporogenes were tested by agar dilution for susceptibility to tetracycline, metronidazole, erythromycin, penicillin, rifampin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, cephalothin, cefoxitin, vancomycin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, nalidixic acid, and gentamicin. At least 90% of the C. botulinum strains tested (except for nonproteolytic strains of toxin type F with penicillin) were susceptible to all drugs except sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, nalidi…

Clear, defined medium for the sporulation of Clostridium perfringens.

A new, defined medium for the sporulation of Clostridium perfringens is presented. Sporulation levels exceeding 10(6) to 10(7) heat-resistant spores per ml were obtained for seven strains: PS49, PS52, FD-1, T-65, NCTC strains 8798, 8238, and 10240. In the presence of theophylline, a methylxanthine, higher levels of heat-resistant spores were attained for strains PS49, PS52, FD-1, ant T-65; photomicrographs demonstrated a higher fraction of sporulating cells when these strains were grown in the presence of methylxanthines. Use of washed, highly diluted (less than 100 cells) inocula resulted in …

Observations on the possible invasiveness of Clostridium botulinum for waterfowl.

Twenty-four ducklings given multiple doses of Clostridium botulinum type C spores and toxin per os and 27 affected waterfowl from four natural outbreaks of the disease were examined bacteriologically. No evidence of invasion of the blood or liver was found in any bird and it is suggested that invasiveness and toxigenesis in internal organs are probably of little, if any, importance in the causation of botulism in waterfowl.

Clostridium innocuum Bacteremia: Case Report and Systematic Review.

Clostridium innocuum is an anaerobic gram-positive spore-forming bacteria, a commensal member of the human gut microbiome. We encountered a case of bacteremia with this organism as a complication of a foot ulcer in a middle-aged patient with diabetes, end-stage renal disease, and malnutrition. A systematic review of the limited number of previously reported cases of C. innocuum bacteremia is presented, along with a brief narrative review the organism's association with other diseases, ranging from diarrhea and local infections to modulating inflammatory bowel disease and kidney disease.

Phenylthiazoles with potent & optimum selectivity toward Clostridium difficile.

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is one of the most threatening bacteria globally, causing high mortality and morbidity in humans and animals, and is considered a public health threat that requires urgent and aggressive action. Interruption of the human gut microbiome and the development of antibiotic resistance urgently require development and synthesis of effective alternative antibiotics with minimal effects on the normal gut microbial flora. In this study, cyclization of the aminoguanidine head to the thiazole nucleus while maintaining its other pharmacophoric features leads to selecti…

Paeniclostridium (Clostridium) sordellii-associated enterocolitis in 7 horses.

Enteric disease in horses may be caused by a variety of microorganisms, including several clostridial species. Paeniclostridium sordellii (previously Clostridium sordellii) has been frequently associated with gas gangrene in humans and several animal species, including horses. However, its role in enteric diseases of animals has not been fully determined. We describe herein 7 cases of enteric disease in horses associated with P. sordellii infection. Grossly, the small and/or large intestines were necrotic, hemorrhagic, and edematous. Microscopically, there was severe mucosal necrosis and hemor…

Managing complications of collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) injection.

PURPOSE: The introduction of collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) has revolutionized the treatment of Peyronie's disease. The efficacy of this therapy has been well demonstrated and the safety profile is favorable. However, post-injection complications are poorly characterized and management of these complications lacks standardization. METHODS: This review includes literature published in English and indexed in the PubMed®, Embase® or Google Scholar™ databases. What follows is a synopsis of relevant articles, including original research studies, in an attempt to better define CCH compl…

Intrinsic Class D β-Lactamases of Clostridium difficile.

Clostridium difficile is the causative agent of the deadly C. difficile infection. Resistance of the pathogen to β-lactam antibiotics plays a major role in the development of the disease, but the mechanism of resistance is currently unknown. We discovered that C. difficile encodes class D β-lactamases, i.e., CDDs, which are intrinsic to this species. We studied two CDD enzymes, CDD-1 and CDD-2, and showed that they display broad-spectrum, high catalytic efficiency against various β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and expanded-spectrum cephalosporins. We demonstrated that the cdd gene…
