Oxytocin release deficit and social cognition in craniopharyngioma patients.

Oxytocin is a neuropeptide known to affect social behaviour and cognition. Craniopharyngioma patients are considered to have an oxytocin-release-deficit caused by a rare tumour affecting the pituitary and/or the hypothalamus relevant for oxytocin production and release. To assess social behaviour and socio-cognitive abilities in this patient group, we tested 13 patients and 23 healthy controls on self-report questionnaires and an eye-tracking paradigm including fast facial emotion recognition. Additionally, saliva oxytocin levels acquired before and after a physical stress induction were avail…

Beneficial Effects of Walnuts on Cognition and Brain Health.

Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have important roles in the aging process, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), … studies from our and other groups suggest that supplementation with walnuts in the diet may improve cognition and reduce the risk and/or progression of MCI and AD. In the transgenic AD mouse model (AD-tg), we have reported the beneficial effects of a diet with walnuts on memory, learning, motor coordination, anxiety, and locomotor activity. Human clinical t …

Phosphodiesterase as a Target for Cognition Enhancement in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects more than 1% of the population worldwide. Dopamine system dysfunction and alterations … of schizophrenia since many PDE subfamilies are abundant in the brain regions that are relevant to cognition. Thus, this review aims to illustrate the mechanism of PDEs in treating the symptoms of schizophrenia and summarises the encouraging results of PDE inhibitors as anti-schizophrenic drugs in preclinical and clinical studies.

Children Devise and Selectively Use Tools to Offload Cognition.

From maps sketched in sand to supercomputing software, humans ubiquitously enhance cognitive performance by creating and using artifacts that bear mental load [1-5]. This extension of information processing into the environment has taken center stage in debates about the nature of cognition in humans and other animals [6-9]. How does the human mind acquire such strategies? In two experiments, we investigated the developmental origins of cognitive offloading in 150 children aged between 4 and 11 years. We created a memory task in which children were required to recall the location of hidden tar…

Regional leukoaraiosis and cognition in non-demented older adults.

Frontal lobe-executive functions are heavily dependent on distal white matter connectivity. Even with healthy aging there is an increase in leukoaraiosis that might interrupt this connectivity. The goal of this study is to learn 1) the location, depth, and percentage of leukoaraiosis in white matter among a sample of non-demented older adults and 2) associations between these leukoarioasis metrics and composites of cognitive efficiency (processing speed, working memory, and inhibitory function), and episodic memory. Participants were 154 non-demented older adults (age range 60-85) who complete

Hemispheric asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex for complex cognition.

With the exception of language, hemispheric asymmetry has not historically been an important issue in the frontal lobe literature. Data generated over the past 20 years is forcing a reconsideration of this position. There is now considerable evidence to suggest that the left prefrontal cortex is an inference engine that automatically makes simple conceptual, logical, and causal connections to fill in missing information and eliminate uncertainty or indeterminacy. This is a fine-tuning of the "left hemisphere interpreter" account from the callosotomy patient literature. What is new is an unders

Cortical thickness, white matter hyperintensities, and cognition after stroke.

BACKGROUND: A thinner cerebral cortex is associated with higher white matter hyperintensity burden and cognitive impairment in community-dwelling and dementia cohorts. It is important to assess these associations in people with ischemic stroke because their cerebrovascular disease profiles are different to these cohorts. AIMS: We aimed to determine whether cortical thickness was related to white matter hyperintensity burden and cognition after ischemic stroke. METHODS: We measured cortical thickness using advanced normalization tools' "KellyKapowski" function in 244 patients with ischemic st…

Common age-related neuropathologies and yearly variability in cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive variability is a potentially important source of heterogeneity in longitudinal cognitive profiles. We examined the extent to which common age-related neuropathologies including Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease (AD) contribute to yearly variability in late life cognition. METHODS: Data came from 1321 community-dwelling older adults who were followed annually for up to 23 years, died and underwent brain autopsy. Cognition was assessed via a comprehensive testing battery. Uniform neuropathologic evaluations assessed burdens of Lewy bodies, AD, infarcts, TDP, hippocampal s…

Implicit Cognition and Psychopathology: Looking Back and Looking Forward.

Implicit cognitive processing is theorized to have a central role in many forms of psychopathology. In the current review, we focus on implicit associations, by which we mean evaluative representations in memory that are difficult to control and do not require conscious reflection to influence affect, cognition, or behavior. We consider definitional and measurement challenges before examining recent empirical evidence for these associations in anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, posttraumatic stress, depressive, and alcohol use disorders. This examination is framed by a brief review of the ways tha…

The puzzle of preserved cognition in the oldest old.

Although epidemiological studies predict an exponential increase in the prevalence of dementia with age, recent studies have demonstrated that the oldest old are actually less frequently affected by dementia than the younger elderly. To explain this, I suggest a parallel between brain ageing and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and assume that theories concerning the brain's vulnerability to AD and its individual variability may also explain why some of the oldest old remain cognitively efficient. Some theories argue that AD is due to the continuing presence of the immature neurones vulnerable to amyl

Erythropoietin ameliorates harmaline-induced essential tremor and cognition disturbances.

There are conflicting reports concerning the association of motor disabilities with increased risk of mental disorders. This investigation will provide a good understanding about defining the possible association between tremor and risk of anxiety and cognitive alterations. Beside, a secondary objective of the current study was to determine the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on harmaline-induced motor and cognitive impairments. Male Wistar rats were used for the present study. The animal model of Esential tremor (ET) was established by the intraperitoneal injection of harmaline. EPO (5000 U/kg

How Normal Are "Normal" Errors of Language and Cognition?

Purpose The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency and severity of common errors and inefficiencies of language and cognition in the general population. Method Item-response theory parameters were analyzed from the Neuro-QOL Cognitive Function Item Bank v2.0, which references a large normative sample that mirrors the demographics of the U.S. Census. Item parameters were analyzed to reveal the most likely responses to items about errors and inefficiencies of language and cognition. These most likely responses were estimated for each of 25 levels of theta to reveal normal and gradations…

Spontaneous Cognition and Epistemic Agency in the Cognitive Niche.

According to Thomas Metzinger, many human cognitive processes in the waking state are spontaneous and are deprived of the experience of epistemic agency. He considers mind wandering as a paradigm example of our recurring loss of epistemic agency. I will enrich this view by extending the scope of the concept of epistemic agency to include cases of depressive rumination and creative cognition, which are additional types of spontaneous cognition. Like mind wandering, they are characterized by unique phenomenal and functional properties that give rise to varying degrees of epistemic agency. The ma…

Social Cognition and Oxytocin in Huntington's Disease: New Insights.

This study is aimed at relating social cognition in Huntington's Disease (HD) to plasma levels of the social hormone oxytocin (OT). Indeed, HD patients commonly display reduced social skills and OT is involved in bonding behavior and improved recognition of facial emotions. Twelve mild-symptomatic HD patients (stage II Shoulson & Fahn) and 11 gender/age matched controls (healthy controls, HC), without concurrent psychiatric disorders, were investigated at baseline (T₀) for OT plasma levels and social cognition through an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests. Social cognition was a…

Multiple sclerosis and cognition: synaptic failure and network dysfunction.

Cognitive impairment is increasingly recognized to be a core feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), with important implications for the everyday life of individuals with MS and for disease management. Unfortunately, the exact mechanisms that underlie this cognitive impairment are poorly understood and there are no effective therapeutic options for this aspect of the disease. During MS, focal brain inflammatory lesions, together with pathological changes of both CNS grey matter and normal-appearing white matter, can interfere with cognitive functions. Moreover, inflammation may alter the crosstalk

Maternal obesity and offspring cognition: the role of inflammation.

BACKGROUND: High pre-pregnancy body mass index (ppBMI) has been linked to neurodevelopmental impairments in childhood. However, very few studies have investigated mechanisms in human cohorts. METHODS: Among 1361 mother-child pairs in Project Viva, we examined associations of ppBMI categories with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test III [PPVT] and Wide Range Assessment of Visual Motor Abilities [WRAVMA] in early childhood (median 3.2y); and with the Kaufman Brief Intelligence test (KBIT) and WRAVMA in mid-childhood (7.7y).
