BACKGROUND: Split-belt treadmill (SBTM) training has been proposed to improve gait symmetry and overall gait performance of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patient's baseline features affect gait adaptation to SBTM in PD with freezing of gait (FOG).
METHODS: Twenty participants with idiopathic PD and treatment-resistant FOG underwent several clinical assessments including the Toronto Cognitive Assessment (TorCA) prior to treadmill training. Velocity of the treadmill was adjusted to over-ground walking speed. During SBTM training, the belt velocity on

Reactive stepping can be improved in people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD). However, there is variability in the responsiveness to such training. This study examined if cognition could predict the responsiveness of PwPD to a two-week reactive step training intervention. 25 PwPD (70.52 years ± 7.15; Hoehn & Yahr range 1-3) at risk for falls completed a multiple baseline, open-label, uncontrolled pre-post intervention study. Reactive stepping was trained through a two-week (six-session) intervention with repeated support surface translations. Stepping performance was measured at two baseline as

Physical training has beneficial effects not only on physical fitness, but also on cognitive functions. The most effective way to improve cognitive functions via physical training as well as the degree to which training effects transfer to untrained cognitive functions is still unclear, however. Here, we investigated the effects of adaptive and multi-modal short-term training interventions on cognitive training gains and transfer effects. Over a period of 12 weeks, 102 employees of a car manufacturing company (age range 20 to 61 years) received trainer-guided exercises, consisting of either tw

Dogs demonstrate behavioural changes and cognitive decline during aging. Compared to laboratory dogs, little is known about aging in pet dogs exposed to different environments and nutrition. In this study, we examined the effects of age, an enriched diet and lifelong training on different behavioural and cognitive measures in 119 pet dogs (>6yrs). Dogs were maintained on either an enriched diet or a control diet for one year. Lifelong training was calculated using a questionnaire where owners filled in their dog's training experiences to date. Before commencing the diet and after one year of d

Children with genetic neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and Fragile X syndrome may show a range of cognitive impairments, including impairments in executive functions (EF). EF are related to general intelligence, academic achievement, and literacy and mathematical skills. EF deficits are linked to a variety of clinically and socially important behaviors. Therefore, methods for improving EF in children with NDDs could be beneficial. One method for improving EF is through cognitive training. Research on commercial brain training programmes and vide

BACKGROUND: Lightning-related injuries most often involve impairment of the functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, usually including cognitive dysfunctions. We evaluated the cognitive deficit of a patient who had survived a lightning strike and measured the improvement after her cognitive training. This therapeutic method appears to be a powerful tool in the neurorehabilitation treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case study was to prove the beneficial effects of cognitive training as part of the neurorehabilitation after a lightning strike.
METHODS: Six neuropsychological

AIM: To study whether a dyslexia remediation programme, Audilex, improves cognition in extremely low birth (ELBW) children.
METHODS: Six-year-old ELBW children were allocated to a 5-week training with Audilex or playing control computer games. Before and after intervention, auditory event-related brain potentials (ERP) to sound changes were recorded and reading related skills assessed. Primary outcome was the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of ERP. Secondary outcomes were Audilex Test (ability to perform the Audilex games), the reading skills after the intervention and 2 years later. Of e

Individuals with schizophrenia exhibit consistent deficits in social cognition such as emotion perception, attributional style, and theory of mind, which may be targets of psychosocial treatments. Previous intervention studies have typically focused on only one aspect of social cognition and have not assessed generalization of treatment to improvements in social functioning. This paper describes preliminary data from a new group-based treatment, Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT), aimed at improving social cognition in schizophrenia. Eighteen inpatients with schizophrenia spectru

Digital tools and applications are now a common part of young children's daily lives. While excessive screen time and media usage may have negative effects on children's development, well designed cognitive apps have the potential to support children's learning. We investigated the effect of a seven-week intensive cognitive training programme on young children's near- and far-transfer skills. We additionally gathered survey data from parents to gain further insights into children's learning, media usage and observed skills at home. Sixty-three children and families participated in the study (A

Although metacognitive training (MCT) and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) have been proven to be effective interventions for the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia, still little is known about the effects on quality of life (QoL). This systematic review compares the effectiveness of MCT and CBT-based interventions for QoL in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Three electronic databases were screened up to October 2025 for MCT and CBT studies reporting QoL outcomes for patients diagnosed with SSD. Data from 38 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion c

OBJECTIVE: Chronic nightmares are associated with a range of mental and physical health problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, alcohol use, and suicide risk. Cognitive behavioral therapy for nightmares (CBT-N) is a recommended treatment, but is underutilized because of the lack of providers trained in CBT-N. We developed and evaluated a web-based provider training for CBT-N: CBTNightmares.org.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experts developed the content and a prototype of CBTNightmares.org. Testing occurred in 3 phases. First, licensed behavioral health providers and trainees

PURPOSE: Empathy training is a curricular standard in many health care disciplines and is growing in speech-language pathology. This article serves as a perspective on the foundational importance of empathy in health-related outcomes and improving clinical care. In addition, it serves as an integration of cognitive empathy training best practices that may be implemented to enhance speech-language pathology clinical education. These recommendations were utilized to build a traumatic brain injury (TBI) cognitive empathy training, co-constructed using community-based participatory research, and p

BACKGROUND: Impaired cognitive function is observed in many pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease. At present, the pharmaceutical treatments available to counter cognitive decline have only modest effects, with significant side effects. A nonpharmacological treatment that has received considerable attention is computerized cognitive training (CCT), which aims to maintain or improve cognitive functioning through repeated practice in standardized exercises. CCT allows for more regular and thorough training of cognitive functions directly at home, which repre

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is prevalent but inadequately treated in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Central vestibular functions are associated with multiple cognitive domains in PwMS, even when controlling for disability status. To our knowledge, the effectiveness of vestibular training on cognition in PwMS has never been explored. The study's purpose was to determine the effect of vestibular training on PwMS's cognitive functions.
METHODS: Forty PwMS with relapsing-remitting MS, primarily fatigued, were randomly divided into two equal groups. The control group (GI) was treated
