INTRODUCTION: Among inhabitants of endemic areas in the developing world, infection with the larva of Taenia solium (cysticercosis) may possibly induce a state of immunosuppression in the host, thereby increasing the risk of multiple infections after exposure to other parasites, such as Trypanosoma cruzi.
OBJECTIVE: Increase in the epidemiological occurrence of infection was assessed for Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease) in patients with cysticercosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the University Hospital in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, data were obtained from autopsies performed between 1970

The prevalence of occult hepatitis B infection in HIV infected patients is controversial, varying from less than 1% to 62% in different studies. Blood samples of 111 HIV-infected patients, HCV-positive, HBs antigen negative, followed in the APROCO-ANRS EP11 cohort, were used to detect HBV DNA by using 2 different validated assays (Cobas Amplicor HBV Monitor Test and INSERM U271 qualitative ultra-sensitive PCR), completed when positive by HBV real-time PCR. HBV DNA was found in 6 (5.4%, 95% CI 1.2%-9.6%) patients by at least 1 of these assays, but none tested positive in all 3 assays. All 6 pat

Ixodes scapularis and other ticks in the Ixodes ricinus complex may transmit multiple pathogens, but research on coinfections has been limited. Coinfections occur with varying frequency in ticks, but single infections are more common than dual infections. The proportion of I. scapularis or I. ricinus ticks coinfected with both Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophila is generally low, ranging from < 1% to 6% in six geographic areas. A higher prevalence of tick coinfection (26%) has been reported in Westchester County, New York. Genetic variants of the human disease-causing …

A case of balantidial dysentery is reported in a patient infected with the HIV in French Guiana. This case is the first described in medical literature. The patient presented also a disseminated histoplasmosis. Immunosuppression probably favoured the evolution of asymptomatic carriage to clinical dysentery. This clinical case did not present any complications. Treatment with doxycycline had to be carried out for 20 days in order to obtain a clinical and parasitological cure.

Serum samples from patients with documented influenza A virus infections were examined for antibodies to Legionella pneumophila and Mycoplas … differences in relative age frequencies for the two infections may partially explain the absence of coinfections. These data also suggest that in patients with either M. pneumoniae or influenza A virus infection, some type of protective mechanism which prevents coinfections with these organisms is present.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, belong to the Flaviviridae family. Their clinical presentations overlap considerably, including acute fever, nausea, rash, joint pain, and myalgia, making differential diagnosis challenging.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Because DENV and ZIKV share a common mosquito vector, their co-circulation increases the likelihood of dengue-Zika coinfection in both human and mosquito populations. This study documents the first laboratory-confirmed case of dengu…

AIMS: There is a rising prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus-tuberculosis (HIV-TB) coinfection. India is one of the largest contributors to TB across Asia. The systematic review aimed to provide comprehensive data on the prevalence of HIV-TB coinfection among adult patients and its geographic variation (distribution) in India over the past 10 years.
METHODS: PRISMA guidelines for systematic review were followed for this review. The leading search was through Medline/PubMed Central, Web of Science, and Science Direct. Government reports were also assessed for any relevant data on coinfec…

BACKGROUND: Parasitic helminths modulate host immunity to establish chronic infections, often expanding regulatory T cells (Tregs) to suppress inflammation. However, how helminths adjust immunomodulation during coinfection with fast-replicating microparasites remains unclear. Here, we investigated the immune modulation dynamics in a murine model coinfected with the nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Hp) and the protozoan Plasmodium yoelii (Py).
METHODS: We compared Treg expansion in single Hp infected and coinfected mice, assessed Hp excretory-secretory products (HES) for Treg induction in v…

BACKGROUND: Coinfections between malaria and arboviruses such as Dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya Virus (CHIKV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) represent a significant clinical and public health challenge. The molecular pathogenesis of these coinfections is complex and poorly understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression and play a crucial role in the host response to infection. A comprehensive profile of miRNAs implicated in malaria-arbovirus coinfection could provide novel insights into disease mechanisms and reveal new targets for improved management and therapeutic strategies…

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a frequent cause of pediatric pneumonia, but the clinical relevance of respiratory coinfections remains incompletely defined. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 192 hospitalized children with multiplex RT-PCR-confirmed MP infection between April 2023 and November 2025. Patients were classified as MP monoinfection (123/192, 64.1%), MP with viral coinfection (34/192, 17.7%), or MP with bacterial/mixed coinfection (35/192, 18.2%) and children with coinfection were younger than those with MP infection alone, with median ages of 6.5 years (IQR 1-11) in the vi…

OBJECTIVE: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a major causative pathogen in community-acquired pneumonia. Respiratory viral coinfections in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) are not uncommon and cause severe clinical manifestations. This study aims to investigate the impacts of viral coinfection in MPP patients and hopes to offer novel insights for discriminating between MPP and MPP coinfection.
METHODS: This study recruited 748 children hospitalized for MP pneumonia between January 2021 and October 2023. Patients were classified into two groups: MPP coinfected with respiratory virus …

We report a case of a 34-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea following a suspected foodborne illness. She tested positive for COVID-19, human parainfluenza virus type 4, and enterovirus/rhinovirus in the hospital. She subsequently developed hypoxia, hypotension, and sepsis. Blood work revealed leukocytosis and elevated inflammatory markers. Imaging of her abdomen showed fluid-filled bowel loops suggesting acute gastroenteritis and colitis of infectious or inflammatory etiology. She was initially treated with antibiotics for a sus

UNLABELLED: Severe COVID-19 has been associated with coinfections with bacterial and fungal pathogens. Notably, patients with COVID-19 who develop Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia exhibit higher rates of mortality than those infected with either pathogen alone. To understand this clinical scenario, we collected and examined S. aureus blood and respiratory isolates from a hospital in New York City during the early phase of the pandemic from both SARS-CoV-2+ and SARS-CoV-2- patients. Whole genome sequencing of these S. aureus isolates revealed broad phylogenetic diversity in both patient groups,…

The co-occurrence and the similarities between malaria and COVID-19 diseases raise the question of whether SARS-CoV-2 is capable of infectin … nerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection due to red blood cell membrane remodelling. However, we found a low coinfection rate (9,13%), suggesting that P. falciparum would not facilitate the entry of SARS-CoV-2 virus into malaria-infected erythrocytes. Besides, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in a P. falciparum blood culture did not affect the survival or growth rate of the …

We aimed to assess the prevalence of serious bacterial infections (SBIs) in febrile infants < 90 days of age with SARS-CoV-2 infection versus SARS-CoV-2-negative febrile infants. A retrospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary pediatric emergency department between March 2020 and October 2022. Febrile infants < 90 days of age who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing were included. SBIs were defined as urinary tract infection (UTI), bacteremia, and/or bacterial meningitis; bacteremia and bacterial meningitis were considered invasive bacterial infections (IBIs). SBIs rates were compared between

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an opportunistic disease in immunosuppressed individuals, who may present severe clinical conditions, such as the ones described in this patient. She lived in an endemic region for VL, and was possibly infected with L. (L.) infantum chagasi through the bite of a contaminated sand fly. This initial infection has triggered a pemphigus vulgaris condition by immunogenic proteins present in the mosquito's saliva. The immunosuppression caused by the use of high doses of corticosteroids to control the disease promoted a severe VL condition, with hepatosplenomegaly, thro
