Adult immunization is a neglected and underpublicised issue in Southeast Asia. Vaccine-preventable diseases cause unnecessary morbidity and mortality among adults in the region, while inadequate immunization results in unnecessary costs, including those associated with hospitalization, treatment, and loss of income. Childhood vaccination coverage is high for the EPI diseases of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis; however, unvaccinated, undervaccinated, and aging adults with waning immunity remain at risk from infection and may benefit from vaccination. Catch-up immunization is advisable for adu

The epidemiology and control strategies of African trypanosomiasis, plague, rabies, brucellosis, anthrax and hydatidosis, the most important and well documented zoonotic diseases in Tanzania, have been described. Bovine tuberculosis, tetanus, taeniosis, trichinosis and tungosis are also endemic in some parts of the country but records of their incidences are not available. Initial outbreaks of trypanosomiasis in Tanzania were caused by Trypanosoma gambiense which originated from West Africa and reached Tanzania via Zaire around 1902. T. rhodesiense which is currently responsible for human tryp

A well organized employee health service is a key component of an effective infection control program. All health care providers should be immune to mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, and polio. Hepatitis B vaccine should be offered to all workers who have contact with blood. Employees with signs and symptoms of infectious diseases should be evaluated by Employee Health and follow work restrictions. Employees with exposure to communicable diseases should be evaluated for prophylaxis.

BackgroundWithin the International Health Regulations framework, the French High Council for Public Health was mandated in 2022 by health authorities to establish a list of priority infectious diseases for public health, surveillance and research in mainland and overseas France.AimOur objective was to establish this list.MethodsA multi-criteria decision analysis was used, as recommended by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. A list of 95 entities (infectious diseases or groups of these, including the World Health Organization (WHO)-labelled 'Disease X') was established by 1

INTRODUCTION: Points of entry and other border regions educate, train, and exercise (ETEs) their staff to improve preparedness and response to cross-border health threats. However, no conclusive knowledge of these ETEs' effectiveness exists. This study aimed to review the literature on ETEs in infectious disease control concerning their methods and effect, with an emphasis on cross-border settings and methods that enlarge ETEs' reach.
METHODOLOGY: We systematically searched for studies in the databases Embase, Medline, Web of Science, PsycInfo, ERIC, and Cinahl. After successively screening t

Pathogen reduction (PR) of selected blood components is a technology that has been adopted in practice in various ways. Although they offer great advantages in improving the safety of the blood supply, these technologies have limitations which hinder their broader use, e.g. increased costs. In this context, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in co-operation with the Italian National Blood Centre, organised an expert consultation meeting to discuss the potential role of pathogen reduction technologies (PRT) as a blood safety intervention during outbreaks of infectiou

In the Republic of Ireland, the schedule of state-funded immunisation for children is comprehensive and includes diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, pneumococcus, hepatitis B, meningococcus C, haemophilus B, polio, measles, rubella and mumps. Varicella and meningococcal B vaccines are commercially available but are not currently funded by the government. Each of the illnesses preventable by these vaccines can cause substantial morbidity, and rarely mortality, in infants and children. Our PICU continues to see serious illness due to avoidable infection. There were 39 admissions in a 4 year period,

Several unique features characterize infectious disease epidemiology in New Zealand. Historically, well-organized, government-run control programs have eliminated several zoonoses. More recently, however, communicable disease control has been mixed. Rates of rheumatic fever, tuberculosis, and enteric infectious are high, and rates of meningococcal disease are increasing. These diseases are over-represented in New Zealanders of Polynesian descent, who generally live in more deprived and overcrowded conditions than do those of European descent. Measles and pertussis epidemics are recurring becau…

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of many serious infectious diseases fundamentally decline as a success of consequent vaccination regimens. However, it is a matter of discussion if vaccination might cause unspecific negative side effects on the immune system. To answer this, we performed a clinical study on children with the question as to whether there is an enhanced frequency of infection diseases after vaccination or not.
METHODS: The study population (n=496) was randomized to a group of vaccinated children (first vaccination on the 60th day of life, n=201) and a group of unvaccinated children (f

In the spring of 1866, the Canadian government feared that a cholera epidemic was imminent. A conference of medical experts was held at Ottawa to determine the nature of the disease on the basis of "authentic facts" but the participants were unable to agree among themselves. Faced with the necessity of advising Canadians on how to live in time of plague, and yet unable to define clearly the nature of cholera, in his Memorandum on Cholera the deputy-minister of Agriculture, J.-C. Taché, translated medical preoccupations into matters of the government of oneself and others, in terms heavily acce

Specifically pathogenous germs affect our environment in many different ways, e.g. through food, waste, sewage or living vectors like birds, arthropodes and other pests. Domestic animals and pets as well as human beings are the most dangerous carriers of infectious agents and permanent excretors. Persistent infections form the infectiological basis in this context. They establish the inexhaustible reservoir of the contamination of the environment with epidemic pathogens, thus endangering the health of human beings. By means of molecularbiological research on the functional bases of germ persis

In the coming years, blood banking and transfusion medicine are expected to undergo a number of changes in areas such as the refinement of plasma fractionation, advanced pheresis techniques and in the improvement of safety of blood products. In addition, recombinant DNA technology is believed to hold much promise as an alternate source of plasma proteins and within 5-10 years will probably replace at least several plasma derivatives. Substitutes for red cells and platelets, although more difficult to develop, may also become available in the future. These developments will affect the need for

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia and vascular occlusion, causing recurrent painful episodes, neuro-cognitive deficits, organ failures and death in early adulthood. Besides the medical consequences, most of the families with a child of SCD have to cope with financial and social crisis. Quality of life (QOL) is a broad multidimensional concept that usually includes subjective evaluations of both positive and negative aspects of life. Other than health; emotional well being, social dysfunction, chronic pain and fatigability are also important aspe

BACKGROUND: Communicable disease outbreaks cause millions of deaths throughout Sub-Saharan Africa each year. Most of the diseases causing epidemics in the region have been nearly eradicated or brought under control in other parts of the world. In recent years, considerable effort has been directed toward public health initiatives and strategies with a potential for significant impact in the fight against infectious diseases. In 1998, the World Health Organization African Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) launched the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy aimed at mitigating the

In 1996 there were 65,024 notifications to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. The record high number of Ross River virus infection notifications was of particular note. The highest rates were recorded in Western Australia, where an outbreak was documented in the South West, and in Queensland. Most cases occurred in the late summer and early autumn months. The number of measles cases has continued to fall markedly following the outbreak in 1993 and 1994. Rubella notifications also fell in 1996. The number of cases of pertussis remained at a similar level to that recorded in r
