A Novel Reentry Hotline Led by Community Health Workers to Address the Health Needs of People Returning From Incarceration: Transitions Clinic Network, California, June 2020‒June 2023.

Community members returning from incarceration experience serious health disparities, which intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, community health workers with lived experience of incarceration in the Transitions Clinic Network established a California reentry health care hotline to support time-sensitive linkages to postrelease medical care. From June 2020 to June 2023, the hotline supported 1276 people transitioning from incarceration. Lessons from this peer-led public health intervention are relevant for states utilizing Medicaid waivers to improve health equity for justice…

Expanding the roles of community health workers to sustain programmes during malaria elimination: a meeting report on operational research in Southeast Asia.

In Southeast Asia malaria elimination is targeted by 2030. Cambodia aims to achieve this by 2025, driven in large part by the urgent need to control the spread of artemisinin-resistant falciparum malaria infections. Rapid elimination depends on sustaining early access to diagnosis and effective treatment. In much of Cambodia, rapid elimination will rely on a village malaria worker (VMW) network. Yet as malaria declines and is no longer a common cause of febrile illness, VMWs may become less popular with febrile patients, as VMWs do not diagnose or treat other conditions at present. There is a

A Remote Intervention Based on mHealth and Community Health Workers for Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence in People With HIV: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART), only 66% of people with HIV in the United States achieve viral suppression, largely due to suboptimal ART adherence. Barriers such as limited access to care and forgetfulness impact adherence rates, which must be maintained at ≥95% to prevent viral load rebound. Combination interventions leveraging community health worker (CHW) support and mobile health (mHealth) technologies have the potential to overcome previously identified barriers and provide cost-effective support for improving adherence and viral suppression outcomes

Community health workers in clinical research at the example of a phase IIIb/ IV antimalarial drug trial conducted in five African countries.

Global health, particularly in underserved settings can benefit immensely from well-trained community health workers (CHWs) supporting primary healthcare interventions. They can reduce morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases like malaria. Disease control programs can particularly benefit from a tight link between CHWs and communities and several studies have shown the benefit of the participation of non-facility-based CHWs in malaria control program activities for reducing malaria-related mortality in children. Because CHWs are often part of and trusted by served communities, they can a…

Boost your health (Refuerza tu Salud): Design of a randomized controlled trial of a community health worker intervention to reduce inequities in COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations.

INTRODUCTION: Low-income and underserved populations, especially racial and ethnic minorities, experience health disparities linked to social determinants. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified these disparities, necessitating effective strategies to address structural racism and related factors. Vaccination, crucial for mitigating infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and influenza, remains challenging among underserved populations. Community health worker (CHW) interventions show promise in addressing these disparities but have not undergone rigorous evaluation with a randomized controlled trial
