Sex reconfigured: DIY hormone therapy and vernacular endocrinology in transfeminine communities in China.

Faced with a restrictive institutional medical landscape, trans people in China turn to DIY (Do-It-Yourself) hormone therapy. While existing health literature has studied the risks and impacts of informal hormone therapy, little is known about the practical strategies and the embedded meaning-making processes around hormone-taking on the ground. Building on digital and in-person participant observation conducted in two cities in China and semi-structured interviews with eight transfeminine individuals between 2021 and 2022, this article examines the embodied practices and community knowledge o

A case of zootherapy with the tarantula Brachypelma vagans Ausserer, 1875 in traditional medicine of the Chol Mayan ethnic group in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: In practically every human culture, the use of arthropods as medicinal resources has been reported. In Mexico, the Mayan people mainly use plants but occasionally also animals and minerals in their medicine. This article is the first to report the traditional use of the tarantula Brachypelma vagans by medicine men in the Chol community, an ancient indigenous group that inhabits the southeastern part of Mexico. We also describe the utility of such arachnids in traditional medicine. METHODS: This study was carried out in different Chol communities in the states of Chiapas and Campec

The Meaning of Community Characteristics in the Recruitment and Retention of Rural Health Care Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Rural communities face shortages of health care professionals, leading to reduced access to care and increased patient mortality. While prior studies have identified factors that positively influence recruitment and retention, limited research has examined how community characteristics shape these experiences. Authors of this study aimed to better understand the role of community characteristics in recruiting and retaining rural health care professionals in Kansas. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and nurses working

Precision Ecologic Medicine: Tailoring Care to Mitigate Impacts of Climate Change.

As recent extreme weather events demonstrate, climate change presents unprecedented and increasing health risks, disproportionately so for disadvantaged communities in the U.S. already experiencing health disparities. As patients in these frontline communities live through extreme weather events, socioeconomic and health stressors are compounded; thus, their healthcare teams will need tools to provide precision ecologic medicine approaches to their care. Many primary care teams are taking actionable steps to bring community-level socioeconomic data ("community vital signs") into electronic med

Ethical principles for practice building in the era of targeted radioligand therapy.

Theranostics is emerging as a critical pillar of oncologic management, as exemplified by the success of Lu-177-PSMA-617 for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer. The emergence of such theranostic agents represents an opportunity to reconsider facets of nuclear medicine practice that will enable its engagement in high-volume radioligand delivery. In this article, we aim to explore simple ethical principles that can guide the development of theranostics programs as radiopharmaceutical agents proliferate and the typical nuclear medicine physician transitions from a primarily diag

Exploring doctors' perspectives on precision medicine and AI in colorectal cancer: opportunities and challenges for the doctor-patient relationship.

BACKGROUND: Precision medicine and artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly integrated into colorectal cancer (CRC) care, offering personalised treatment strategies and data-driven decision support. While these technologies promise improved outcomes, they also raise challenges concerning clinical decision-making, the doctor-patient relationship, and ethics. This study explores physicians' perspectives on integrating precision medicine and AI in CRC care. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with ten CRC physicians from six European countries. Partic

Medicinal plants and formulations used by the Soren clan of the Santal tribe in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh for treatment of various ailments.

The Santals form the largest tribal community in northern Bangladesh reside primarily in Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions, where they live in the districts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, and Panchagarh. Although they are fast losing their traditional medicinal practices, they still have their own medicinal practitioners who rely mostly on medicinal plants for treatment of a variety of ailments. The traditional medicinal practices vary quite extensively between the twelve clans of the Santals. The objective of the present study was to conduct an ethnomedicinal survey amongst the Sore

Use of a digital application to enhance communication and triage between care homes and national health service community services in the United Kingdom: a qualitative evaluation.

Recent years have seen a rise in digital interventions to improve coordination between care homes and NHS services, supporting remote sharing of data on the health of care home residents. Such interventions were key components in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents findings from the qualitative component of an evaluation of an implementation of the HealthCall Digital Care Homes application, across sites in northern England. The purpose of this qualitative component was to explore issues round feasibility, appropriacy, and acceptability. The implementation commenced prior

Specialized dermatological care for marginalized populations and education at the primary care level: is community dermatology a feasible proposal?

Skin diseases have a very high frequency either in developed as well as in undeveloped countries. Guerrero, Chiapas, and Oaxaca are the most impoverished states in Mexico, where 24% of the population lacks basic health care, and only 15% are estimated to have access to specialists. Community Dermatology program was founded in 1991 with the intention of improving the dermatological health of remote, marginalized inhabitants of the state of Guerrero. The program consists of a two-day visit to a pre-selected community; the first day includes a basic dermatology training course for local providers

[A community battle against a tropical endemic disease: supernatural beliefs and tsetse fly traps in the Congo].

Community participation in the control of tropical diseases is of major importance nowadays, particularly for sleeping sickness (Gambian trypanosomiasis). Indeed, the authoritarian measures used with success to control this disease during the colonial period are difficult to apply now. Moreover, in the Congo, cultural and financial restrictions are such that patients sometimes refuse treatment. Thus, it has become highly desirable for vector control to be carried out at the same time as the treatment of patients. Trapping tsetse flies (or Glossina) is an ingenious and effective anti-vectorial

HFSA/SAEM/ISHLT clinical expert consensus document on the emergency management of patients with ventricular assist devices.

Mechanical circulatory support is now widely accepted as a viable long-term treatment option for patients with end-stage heart failure (HF). As the range of indications for the implantation of ventricular assist devices grows, so does the number of patients living in the community with durable support. Because of their underlying disease and comorbidities, in addition to the presence of mechanical support, these patients are at a high risk for medical urgencies and emergencies (Table 1). Thus, it is the responsibility of clinicians to understand the basics of their emergency care. This consens

Evaluation of antibiotics returned for safe disposal during and after a community pharmacy antibiotic amnesty campaign.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies in England offer convenient and safe disposal of unwanted medicines, including antimicrobials, and better uptake of this service could limit environmental antimicrobial resistance. However, there is limited information on the extent and nature of antibiotic returns to community pharmacies. The impact of an antibiotic amnesty campaign promoting antibiotic disposal through community pharmacies was evaluated with the intention of collecting detailed information on the antibiotics returned. METHODS: An antibiotic amnesty campaign was delivered by community pharmac
