Oral Health Care in the United States.

An updated understanding of the U.S. oral health care system is essential for addressing the burden of oral disease, high dental expenditures, and persistent inequities in access. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the prevalence of major oral diseases, dental care delivery, financing, dental workforce, and public health initiatives, and highlights the challenges and future opportunities in the U.S. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Google Scholar, and reports from U.S. federal agencies and professional organizations was conducted between September 2025 and March 2026. Life after the hospital: Lived experience of people with traumatic spinal cord injury in a resource-constrained setting - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: When a traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) happens to healthy individuals, it requires an adjustment to life situations in the community. Exploring the lived experience of spinal cord injury survivors is important because it forms a foundation for designing strategies to improve their reintegration back into the community. There are limited studies in the East and Central African region regarding the experience of community reintegration following a TSCI. OBJECTIVES: This study explored lived experiences of persons with TSCI in Rwanda. Specifically, it sought to identify and under

Designing an Indicator‑Driven, Value‑Based Architecture for Pneumonia Prevention in Japan: A Formative Policy Viewpoint on Adult Vaccination and Oral Care.

Japan's aging society concentrates pneumonia burden across communities, long‑term care, perioperative pathways, and hospitals. Adult pneumococcal and influenza vaccination are supported by trials and meta‑analyses and are often cost‑effective; yet, realized value depends on targeting, measurement, financing, and pairing with bedside prevention such as oral care and hospital‑acquired pneumonia bundles. This viewpoint proposes a formative, indicator‑driven architecture linking cost‑effectiveness to operations by aligning vaccination with complementary oral‑care prevention and value‑based payment

Equitable implementation of lung cancer screening: avoiding its potential to mirror existing inequities among people who use tobacco.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, but the advent of lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography offers a tremendous opportunity to improve lung cancer outcomes. Unfortunately, implementation of lung cancer screening has been hampered by substantial barriers and remains suboptimal. Specifically, the commentary emphasizes the intersectionality of smoking history and several important sociodemographic characteristics and identities that should inform lung cancer screening outreach and engagement efforts, including socioeconomic considerations (e.g., health in

Coverage and determinants of COVID-19 vaccination among 36 555 Nigerian women of childbearing age: a mixed-effects analysis of nationally representative data.

INTRODUCTION: Even though COVID-19 has spread globally, with millions of deaths, vaccination remains low in resource-constrained settings. Uptake of COVID-19 vaccine has remained suboptimal despite its potential for protection against the disease. The objective of this study was to assess the factors associated with higher COVID-19 vaccination uptake among Nigerian women of reproductive age. METHODS: A sample of 36 555 women aged 15-49 years was extracted from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data. The outcome variable was COVID-19 vaccination. Percentage and χ2 tests were used

Identifying an association between socio-demographic factors and breast cancer screening adherence in a federally qualified health centre sample in the United States. A retrospective, cross-sectional study.

Federally Qualified Health Centres (FQHC) are community-based centres in the United States, intended to fill a gap in care for underserved populations, including Medicaid patients and the homeless. Because of the Affordable Care Act, passed into law in 2010, there was a 29% increase in Medicaid enrolees nationally. One service offered at FQHCs is breast cancer screening. Breast cancer screening has been shown to have the lowest adherence levels among low-income women and homeless women. As they serve patients with socio-economic barriers, FQHCs are a vital resource in ensuring access to such s

Social dimensions of climate-induced flooding in Jakarta (Indonesia): The role of non-point source pollution.

Because of its low-lying location, urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure, Jakarta (Indonesia) has experienced an increase in annual flooding events, rising from an average of five significant floods per year in the 1990s to over 20 annually (2010-2020). With climate change exacerbating extreme weather events, Jakarta encounters escalating risks of flooding. Although the recurrent flooding is exacerbated by non-point source (NPS) of pollution such as urban runoff and agricultural discharge that contribute to 40% of total pollutants leading to flood-related issues in Jakarta, none has inve

Perceived everyday discrimination, socioeconomic status, and mammography behavior.

Black women (BW) experience age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rates that are 40% higher than White women. Although, screening rates for breast cancer are similar between White and Black women, differences in mammography utilization exist among women with lower socioeconomic status (SES). Moreover, perceived everyday discrimination (PED) has been shown to have an inverse relationship on health screening behavior among BW. However, mammography behaviors of BW with low SES, who also report higher levels of PED, is not well known. This study aims to explore the relationship between perceived di

Community Firearm Violence, Youth Depression, and Suicide Risk in Philadelphia: 2017-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Youth suicide and depression rates increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Philadelphia, firearm violence surged and has since declined to pre-pandemic levels. We examined whether youth depression and suicide risk also declined and whether community firearm violence moderated these trajectories, given its documented associations with trauma and stress in youth. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 71 663 well visits among youth aged 12 to 18 years in a pediatric primary care network in Philadelphia, 2017 to 2024. Youth were screened for depression and suicidality using
