Conjunctivitis and endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis mostly occurred after ophthalmic surgery. Therefore, the present study aimed to maximize the ocular delivery of ciprofloxacin (CPX) using colloidal lipid-based carrier to control the post-surgical infection. BACKGROUND: Neonatal conjunctivitis is frequent and could benefit from daily cleansing with saline. Anyway super infections can occur and therefore antibiotics are frequently needed. Recently alternative therapies (e.g. Echinacea angustifolia) are used for neonatal conjunctivitis to try to reduce antibiotics therapy. The aim of the study was to verify if the use of gauze containing Echinacea angustifolia compared to standard sodium-chloride at the onset of conjunctivitis symptoms is effective in reducing the clinical symptoms and the risk for superinfections.

Neisseria sicca, a Gram-negative diplococcus commonly found in the nasopharynx as part of normal bacterial flora, is typically non-pathogenic but has been associated with various diseases including endocarditis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia and meningitis (Jeurissen et al., 2006; Kozlova et al., 2020; Alcid, 1980; Carter et al., 2007). In this report, we present a case of peritonitis in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis caused by N. sicca and review the literature on Neisseria-associated peritonitis.

The technique of impression cytology was used for cytologic examination of conjunctival samples from 128 patients with a variety of external eye diseases. The method of sample collection and the staining procedure are described. Microscopic examination showed 62 cases with allergic conjunctivitis, 23 with bacterial or viral infection, 26 cases with changes typical of dry eye and 17 cases with non-specific chronic inflammation. The cytologic features and numerous applications of impression cytology are discussed.

The aerobic microbial flora of 823 eyes with acute bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, dacryocystitis, discharging sockets, blepharitis, and postoperative infections has been investigated. Staphylococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli including Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the main pathogens. Fermenting coliforms were also infrequently isolated. A 29-year-old woman presented with unilateral, chronic follicular conjunctivitis since 6 weeks. While the conjunctival swab taken from the patient's eye was negative in a Chlamydia (C.) trachomatis-specific PCR, C. felis was identified as etiological agent using a pan-Chlamydia TaqMan-PCR followed by sequence analysis. A pet kitten of the patient was found to be the source of infection, as its conjunctival and pharyngeal swabs were also positive for C. felis. The patient was successfully treated with systemic doxycycline. This report, which presents one of the few documented cases of human C.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of non-vision-impairing ocular conditions (NVIC) and estimate the number of primary eye care treatments per 1000 population per month.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study in a random sample of 1670 people was done to determine the load of NVIC in a village in Chakwal district.

Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) is commonly used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. We included 55 patients in this prospective study, and inspected them before, while and after therapy with isotretinoin regarding ocular side effects. The authors used immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase tests to study a group of 101 patients with acute or chronic conjunctivitis, etiologically unrelated to conventional bacterial pathogens, and a control group of 30 healthy adults. Positive titers of IgG in serum and of IgA in lacrimal secretions against Chlamydia, detected by IPA, correlated with the identification of microorganisms by direct immunofluorescence.
