BACKGROUND: Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni are endemic to East Africa. US Peace Corps volunteers (PCVs) serving in Tanzania were not experiencing symptoms of infection, but in 1998 when comprehensive testing was instituted, more than one-quarter were found to be infected with schistosomiasis at the close of their 27-month tour of service.
METHODS: An education campaign was instituted by the in-country Peace Corps Medical Officers. At their close of service, all PCVs had a medical examination and blood, urine, and stool samples were tested for schistosomiasis. PCVs also answer

UNLABELLED: Policy Points As a consequence of mass incarceration and related social inequities in the United States, jails annually incarcerate millions of people who have profound and expensive health care needs. Resources allocated for jail health care are scarce, likely resulting in treatment delays, limited access to care, lower-quality care, unnecessary use of emergency medical services (EMS) and emergency departments (EDs), and limited services to support continuity of care upon release. Potential policy solutions include alternative models for jail health care oversight and financing, a

BACKGROUND: Burnout is highly prevalent among ICU nurses and compromises physical and psychological well-being, leading to productivity loss. However, limited evidence exists regarding the pathways through which burnout influences productivity, particularly the role of sleep disturbance and depression.
AIM: Few studies have examined the mechanisms through which burnout affects health-related productivity in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. This study addresses this gap by investigating the sequential mediating role of sleep quality and depressive symptoms in the relationship between burnout

BACKGROUND: Migrant populations in high-income countries have faced myriad health and social inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Migrants often work in frontline essential services that expose them to COVID-19. Migrant workers in meat processing plants have endured large COVID-19 outbreaks across multiple countries.
OBJECTIVES: We examine current scientific evidence around COVID-19 transmission, outcomes, and prevention for migrant workers and highlight meat processing plants as an example.
SOURCES: We performed a series of PubMed searches between January 1, 2020 and January 12, 2022.

PURPOSE: Good vision during childhood is vital for visual, educational, and social development. Previous research highlights challenges in the accessibility of eye care for children. This study investigates the accessibility of primary eye care for young children with typical development and those with autism in England.
METHODS: A telephone survey was conducted using four hypothetical scenarios (a child aged 1, 3, 5 years and a 13-year-old with autism). Four hundred community optometric practices (100 different practices for each scenario) were contacted to explore the availability of an eye

Considering the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we recognised a lack of synthesis amongst the available literature pertaining to the intersections of homelessness and pandemic response and planning. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to identify relevant peer-reviewed literature in this area to thematically produce evidence-based recommendations that would inform community planning and response amongst homeless populations. Although this review is inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, our intention was to produce relevant recommendations to for all current and future outbreaks and pandemics more

BACKGROUND: Limited knowledge exists regarding antibody affinity maturation following mRNA vaccination in naïve vs. COVID-19 recovered individuals and potential sex differences.
METHODS: We elucidated post-vaccination antibody profiles of 69 naïve and 17 COVID-19 convalescent adults using pseudovirus neutralization assay (PsVNA) covering SARS-CoV-2 WA-1, variants of concern (VOCs) and variants of interest (VOIs). Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) was used to measure antibody affinity against prefusion spike and receptor binding domain (RBD) and RBD mutants.
FINDINGS: Higher neutralizing antibo

Excitement mounts as the global health and international development communities anticipate a polio-free world. Despite substantial political and logistical hurdles, only 223 cases of wild poliovirus in three countries were reported in 2012. Down 99% from the estimated 350,000 annual cases in 125 countries in 1988-this decline signals the imminent global eradication of polio. However, elimination of new polio cases should not also signal an end to worldwide engagement with polio. As many as 20 million continue to live with the disabling consequences of the disease. In developed countries where

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most cases of preterm birth occur spontaneously and result from preterm labor with intact (spontaneous preterm labor [sPTL]) or ruptured (preterm prelabor rupture of membranes [PPROM]) membranes. The prediction of spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) remains underpowered due to its syndromic nature and the dearth of independent analyses of the vaginal host immune response. Thus, we conducted the largest longitudinal investigation targeting vaginal immune mediators, referred to herein as the immunoproteome

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease incidence rates have steadily increased since its official recognition in 1975. Since exposure to Lyme is associated with activities conducted in and around tick-habitats including tall grass, shrubs, deciduous forest, and leaf litter, it has been suggested that service members, who are thought to spend higher amounts of time in these habitats due to training requirements, may have higher risk for exposure. Specifically, this study looks at service member and family member exposure to Ixodes scapularis, the vector for Lyme in the Northeastern and Midwestern United St

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the parasitic diseases of poverty caused by larval forms of trematode worms. Individuals get infected upon contact with water infected by these larvae through skin penetration. Thus, poor people without access to basic water and sanitation services, among others are more likely to contract the disease. The greatest burden of the disease is found in Africa where over 200 million people require preventive treatment. Given that Africa has experienced economic growth in recent times, albeit with some declines, this study investigated the effect of per capita i

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia bears a high burden of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Early access to VL diagnosis and care improves clinical prognosis and reduces transmission from infected humans; however, significant obstacles exist. The approximate 250,000 seasonal mobile workers (MW) employed annually in northwestern Ethiopia may be particularly disadvantaged and at risk of VL acquisition and death. Our study aimed to assess barriers, and recommend interventions to increase access, to VL diagnosis and care among MWs.

The Sonagachi Project was initiated in Kolkata, India in 1992 as a STD/HIV intervention for sex workers. The project evolved to adopt strategies common to women's empowerment programs globally (i.e., community mobilization, rights-based framing, advocacy, micro-finance) to address common factors that support effective, evidence-based HIV/STD prevention. The Sonagachi model is now a broadly diffused evidence-based empowerment program. We previously demonstrated significant condom use increases among female sex workers in a 16 month replication trial of the Sonagachi empowerment intervention (n=

Modern life science research is a collaborative effort. Few research groups can single-handedly support the necessary equipment, expertise and personnel needed for the ever-expanding portfolio of technologies that are required across multiple disciplines in today's life science endeavours. Thus, research institutes are increasingly setting up scientific core facilities to provide access and specialised support for cutting-edge technologies. Maintaining the momentum needed to carry out leading research while ensuring high-quality daily operations is an ongoing challenge, regardless of the resou

The COVID-19 pandemic complicated efforts to deliver interventions to marginalized populations at risk of contracting COVID-19. Grandfamilies are one such group. GRANDcares Plus (GC+) is an intervention designed to help grandfamilies build resilience. It was scheduled to launch shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began and consequently was heavily influenced by the pandemic. This paper discusses responses and adaptations made in implementing GC+ during the pandemic. Primary information sources included facilitators, COVID-19 information outlets, grandfamilies, and the project site coordinator.

The mental health problems of employees have become a major occupational health issue in Japan. External employee assistance program providers (EAP) have become important in mental health care for workers, but their activities are poorly documented. This descriptive study was undertaken to clarify the status and future tasks of EAP in Japan. The subjects were all EAP (n=27) registered in the Japanese Chapter of Employee Assistance Professionals Association. The questionnaire survey was conducted in January 2007. We received 13 replies, a response rate of 54.2%. Most EAP provided seminars, stre

Injecting drug users (IDUs) are at high risk for contracting and spreading viral hepatitis through nonsterile injection practices, unprotected sexual contact, and unsanitary living conditions. We sought to characterize hepatitis knowledge, prior testing, and vaccination history among IDUs at a New York City syringe exchange program (SEP). IDU subjects generally had a poor understanding of viral hepatitis transmission and prevention. We also found low vaccination rates: only 8% reported receiving hepatitis A vaccine and 11%, hepatitis B vaccine. Educating IDUs about risky behaviors and medical

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a leading cause of blindness and visual disability in younger people. Optometrists have a major role in detecting RP and in reducing the visual disability associated with RP. This review summarises the literature relating to visual function in people with RP, with particular attention given to night-blindness, visual acuity decrease and visual field contraction. The range of low vision aids available for people with RP is reviewed and suggestions given on aids that have been found to be most successful. Most importantly, this review overviews the range of services

The Health Care Financing Administration has contracted with state peer review organizations (PROs) in its effort to assure the quality of services and eliminate unreasonable and inappropriate care provided Medicare beneficiaries. By law, each state PRO must select 10 procedures for precertification. Coronary angioplasty has been chosen by 45 PROs for precertification and criteria in each state were developed with the advice of local physicians. This report describes the findings of a survey of these precertification criteria in an effort to determine their variability and to compare the PRO c

The 21st Century Cures Act opened Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment to people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Previously, most Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD were only permitted to enroll in traditional Medicare. The purpose of our study was to determine how MA plans responded to this policy change. We conducted 48 interviews with representatives from MA plans, dialysis provider organizations, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) care management companies. One major theme that emerged from our interviews was MA plans partnered with CKD care management companies to manage the care of ESRD p
