The Inmate Navigation, Enrollment, Support, and Treatment (INVEST) Program: Results From a Randomized Control Trial of a Jail Reentry Program for Adults With Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues.

The Inmate Navigation, Enrollment, Support, and Treatment (INVEST) program is a reentry intervention for persons who are detained with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. In a randomized controlled trial, 202 adults were assigned to either INVEST or standard reentry services. INVEST combined peer support, case management, and cognitive behavioral treatment during and after incarceration. Participants who successfully completed INVEST had significantly better outcomes: fewer rebookings, fewer days in jail, and more time in the community. Gains were found in access to support

Evaluating a Peer-Support Mobile App for Mental Health and Substance Use Among Adolescents Over 12 Months During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well known that adolescents frequently turn to their friends for support around mental health and substance use problems, there are currently no evidence-based digital programs to support them to do this. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Mind your Mate program, a digital peer-support program, in improving mental health symptoms, reducing the uptake of substance use, and increasing help seeking. The Mind your Mate program consists of a 40-minute web-based classroom lesson and a companion smartphone mobile app. The active control gr

An eHealth Prevention Program for Substance Use, Sexual Assault, and Sexual Risk Behaviors for Adolescents in Primary Care: Pilot Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial of Teen Well Check.

BACKGROUND: Substance use, sexual assault, and sexual risk behaviors are common among adolescents and are interrelated. Nearly 1 in 5 adolescents use substances before sexual encounters, placing these young people at risk for both sexual assault and sexual risk behaviors. Primary care visits present a unique opportunity to address multiple health risk behaviors. OBJECTIVE: Teen Well Check is a web-based integrated prevention program for substance use, sexual assault, and sexual risk behaviors with demonstrated usability and acceptability among patients and providers. The aim of this study was

A randomized controlled trial of a brief motivational interviewing-based group intervention for emerging adults experiencing homelessness: 12-Month effects on substance use and sexual risk behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Few brief evidence-based risk reduction programs for emerging adults experiencing homelessness focus on the interrelated problems of substance use and sexual risk behavior. This study examines outcomes from a 12-month evaluation of AWARE, a brief Motivational Interviewing (MI)-based group risk reduction intervention for this population. METHODS: In a cluster randomized crossover trial, N = 276 18-25-year-olds received AWARE or usual care at drop-in centers serving homeless youth in Los Angeles County. We evaluated intervention effects on substance use and condomless sex (primary

Trauma-Integrated Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention for Women with Comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Feasibility and Acceptability Trial.

Background: Comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder (PTSD-SUD) among women receiving substance use treatment are common. Few evidence-based interventions target PTSD-SUD, however, fewer are gender responsive. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP) has shown effectiveness for women with SUD, although it does not explicitly target PTSD. Integration of trauma-focused and gender-responsive treatments into MBRP may address the limited availability of PTSD-SUD interventions for women. This study assessed feasibility and acceptability of trauma-integrated MBRP (TI-MBRP

The efficacy of a blended motivational interviewing and problem solving therapy intervention to reduce substance use among patients presenting for emergency services in South Africa: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of substance use disorders is a public health priority, particularly in South Africa where the prevalence of these disorders is high. We tested two peer-counsellor delivered brief interventions (BIs) for risky substance use among adults presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in South Africa. METHODS: In this randomised controlled trial, we enrolled patients presenting to one of three 24-hour EDs who screened at risk for substance use according to the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST). Eligible patients were randomly allocated to o

A protocol for a randomized controlled comparative effectiveness trial of two brief interventions focused on social and cultural connectedness to reduce risk for suicide and substance misuse in young Alaska Native people.

BACKGROUND: Suicide among young people in Alaska Native (AN) communities was nearly unheard of through the establishment of statehood in 1959, but from 1960-1995, the suicide rate increased by approximately 500% during this period of rapid, imposed social transition. These disruptions increased conditions associated with suicide risk (e.g., substance use disorders, cultural disconnection), and challenged the community-level social safety net of youth protective factors. The purpose of this paper is to outline development and evaluation methodology for a comparative effectiveness trial of two v

Motivational network intervention to reduce substance use and increase supportive connections among formerly homeless emerging adults transitioning to housing: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate high rates of substance use among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH). Further, the social networks of YEH, although multi-dimensional in composition, are largely comprised of other YEH, substance users, and individuals who do not provide the youth with tangible or emotional support. For YEH who have the opportunity to enter a housing program, helping them to reduce their substance use and strengthen their prosocial supportive connections during this critical transition period may increase their stability and reduce their risk of re-entering homelessness. SCL-90-R emotional distress ratings in substance use and impulse control disorders: One-factor, oblique first-order, higher-order, and bi-factor models compared.

To fully understand the dimensionality of an instrument in a certain population, rival bi-factor models should be routinely examined and tested against oblique first-order and higher-order structures. The present study is among the very few studies that have carried out such a comparison in relation to the Symptom Checklist-90-R. In doing so, it utilized a sample comprising 2593 patients with substance use and impulse control disorders. The study also included a test of a one-dimensional model of general psychological distress. Oblique first-order factors were based on the original a priori 9-

Self-wise, Other-wise, Streetwise (SOS) training: a novel intervention to reduce victimization in dual diagnosis psychiatric patients with substance use disorders: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric patients are more likely to be victims of crime than others in the community. Dual diagnosis patients with comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders are especially prone to victimization. Victimization is associated with substance abuse, more severe symptomatology and homelessness. There is a strong need for interventions to reduce victimization in this population. We developed the Self-wise, Other-wise, Streetwise (SOS) training to reduce victimization in patients with dual diagnosis. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a randomized controlled trial using a parallel

Topical non-peptide antagonists of sensory neurotransmitters substance P and CGRP do not modify patch test and prick test reactions: a vehicle-controlled, double-blind pilot study.

Immunologic responses in the skin can be modulated by such neurotransmitters of sensory nerve fibers as substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). The first-generation receptor antagonists were peptides with large molecules and had to be injected intracutaneously. The aim of this study was to examine the topical effects of non-peptide antagonists to substance P (aprepitant) and CGRP (telcagepant), respectively, on delayed and immediate reactions in the skin and on associated pruritus. A lipophilic formulation of aprepitant 5% and a hydrophilic formulation of telcagepant 1% we

PrEPSteps: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial to Assess the Feasibility and Acceptability of a Digital Pill-Based PrEP Adherence Intervention in Men Who Have Sex with Men with Substance Use Disorder.

One of the key pillars of Ending the HIV Epidemic is ensuring adherence to oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Men who have sex with men (MSM) who also have substance use disorders experience multiple challenges to maintaining PrEP adherence. We developed a digital pill system (DPS) linked to a personalized adherence intervention, PrEPSteps, to address barriers to PrEP adherence, and tested the feasibility and acceptability of this system, as well as its potential for an effect on PrEP adherence. We enrolled MSM with moderate to severe substance use disorder who were on oral PrEP in a tw

[Examination of Analytical Method for Tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate and Bis(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate to Revise the Official Methods Based on "Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances"].

In Japan, the use of frame retardants [tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate: TDBPP and bis(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate: BDBPP] in several household textile products is banned under the "Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances." As the official analytical methods for testing these substances have not been revised for over 42 years, several issues such as the using of harmful reagents, have been pointed out. Therefore, we developed a new method to revise the official method in our previous study. In this study, the validity of the developed test method is evaluated at
