Municipal waste workers and hepatitis B and C virus and HTLV infection a cross-sectional study.

Globally, millions of individuals are infected with blood-borne pathogens such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV). Municipal waste workers (MWWs) are recognized as vulnerable populations for acquiring these infections due to exposure to contaminated waste. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the seroprevalence of HBV, HCV, and HTLV infections among MWWs in Rasht, the most populous city in Guilan province in Northern Iran. In this cross-sectional study conducted in 2023, blood samples were collected from MWWs. Following serum sepa

Cross-binding antibodies capable of neutralising diverse hantaviruses are produced in response to Puumala virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Orthohantaviruses (hantaviruses) are emerging rodent-borne pathogens that can cause severe human disease. They are present on multiple continents and are responsible for thousands of human cases per year. Despite this, no licenced therapeutics are available, vaccines for most strains are lacking, and the immunological response to infection is poorly characterised. This study aimed to analyse the humoral immune response to Puumala virus (PUUV) infection to inform future studies focussing on the production of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and vaccination strategies. METHODS: Ser

Vaginal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), HPV infection, and vaginal microbiome in firefighters: A cross-sectional study.

Female firefighters are routinely exposed to combustion-derived toxicants, yet the reproductive health implications of this exposure are largely unknown. We investigated whether polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are detectable in the vaginal tract of female firefighters and whether these contaminants are linked to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and vaginal microbiome alterations. In this cross-sectional study 49 female firefighters and 51 community controls self-collected vaginal swabs for analysis of 16 EPA-priority PAHs, high-risk HPV, and microbial composition. All 16

Highly cross-reactive and competent effectors dominate the CD8+ T cell response in Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

CD8+ T cells are key effectors in immune control of Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Within C57BL/6 mice, the T. cruzi-specific CD8+ T cell response is largely comprised of T cells recognizing trans-sialidase (TS)- and mucin-encoded epitopes. Despite their immunodominance, these epitope-specific CD8+ T cells are entirely dispensable for immune control. In a screen for epitopes inducing "protective" CD8+ T cells, we uncovered a high level of cross-reactivity within the TSKb20-specific CD8+ T cell response. This cross-reactivity was driven by the TSKb20 epitope itself and not the infection. TCR sequ

Structural and functional kidney abnormalities in patients with Human immunodeficiency virus infection: A cross-sectional perspective.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease that evolves towards the development of end-stage renal disease. The superimposition of renal impairment on a complex disease, namely human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, will raise the burden of comorbidities and, predict worse outcomes in this group of the population. AIM: To evaluate the structural and functional defects of kidney in patients with HIV infection. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 227 patients with HIV infection. Participants were selected by simple random sampling method. Eligible participants

Ocular Manifestations of Perinatal HIV Infection in Kenyan Children on HAART: A Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a global health concern, particularly in Africa. Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) has transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition, but potential side effects, including ocular manifestations, are recognized. While ophthalmic complications in the pre-HAART era are well-documented, the current landscape in perinatally acquired HIV requires further investigation. This study aims to report the prevalence of ocular involvement in a cohort of children with perinatally acquired HIV. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recru

Association between resolved hepatitis B virus infection and depression in American adults : a cross-sectional study.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health concern, and it can potentially affect mental health like depression. Resolved HBV infection, often perceived as a milder form of HBV infection, are often overlooked, and the association between it and depression remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between resolved HBV infection and depression. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005 to 2018, including 20,655 adult Americans. Resolved HBV infection was defined as HBV surface antige

Culture-independent Multilocus sequence typing screening for Haemophilus influenzae cross-infection in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Whether cross-infection of respiratory pathogens between patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis occurs is debated. Investigation with traditional microbiological culture risks simplifying the lung microbiome. We demonstrate the use of culture-independent Multilocus sequence typing to screen for Haemophilus influenzae strain types in a cohort of twenty-eight patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Detecting latent tuberculosis infection with a breath test using mass spectrometer: A pilot cross-sectional study.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infects a quarter of the world's population and may progress to active tuberculosis (ATB). There is no gold standard for diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Some immunodiagnostic tests are recommended to detect LTBI but can not distinguish ATB from LTBI. The breath test is useful for diagnosing ATB compared to healthy subjects but was never studied for LTBI. This proof-of-concept study (Chinese Clinical Trials Registry number: ChiCTR2200058346) was the first to explore a novel, rapid, and simple LTBI detection method via breath test on high-pressu
