Silicosis in Zambian ex-copper miners: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dust exposure in copper mining, an important industry in Africa, poses a risk of silicosis and pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of silicosis and related radiological abnormalities in Zambian copper miners. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of 496 ex-copper miners' chest X-rays (CXRs) taken at the Occupational Health and Safety Institute in Kitwe, Zambia, between October 2019 and September

Alpha1-Antitrypsin in Lung Diseases: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Major mutations of SERPINA1, the gene encoding alpha1-antitrypsin (A1AT), are known to cause severe emphysema. Our study aimed to investigate the role of major mutations modulating A1AT levels in several lung pathologies and control groups. Blood samples were collected from healthy non-smokers (N0 = 85), healthy smokers (N0 = 291), healthy ex-smokers (N0 = 127), smokers with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD, N0 = 187), ex-smokers with COPD (N0 = 64), and patients with asthma (N0 = 194), interstitial lung disease (ILD) (N0 = 93), sarcoidosis (N0 = 30) and cystic fibrosis (N0 = 26). Prevalence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in Canada: a cross-sectional survey study.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in Canada in January 2023. METHODS: A total of 1 061 ophthalmologists registered with the Canadian Ophthalmological Society were contacted in January 2023 and offered an online survey on VKC. Eighty (7.5%) responded. The prevalence of VKC in Canada was estimated using 6 distinct hypotheses, each based on different assumptions regarding disease duration and the potential experiences of nonresponding ophthalmologists. RESULTS: On the basis of the 6 different hypotheses, the estimated prevalence (per 10,000) of active VK

A Cross-Sectional Study Assessing the Clinical Traits of Patients With Dengue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dengue fever has been prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries since the beginning of this century. Though its clinical features and impacts on various organs have been explored thoroughly, we still lack a concrete correlation among those traits. Hence, we carried out this study to evaluate various clinical parameters of patients with dengue infection. Moreover, we planned to determine the co-occurrence of the symptoms and correlate all clinical parameters. METHODS: This cross-sectional study ran from January to December 2024 at the Kalinga Institute of Medic

Prestige of disciplines within the field of nursing: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Considering the global shortage of nurses, leaders in the field must understand the strengths and weaknesses of various nursing specialties in order to retain professionals within the field. Occupational prestige reflects the perceived contribution of an occupation 'to society', and measures its desirability, benefit and values. Understanding how experienced nurses view the prestige of nursing specialties may help to explain why some specialties are more desirable than others. We conducted a cross-sectional study to examine the prestige of nursing specialties among nurses taking po

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the potential impact of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) on fertility and ovarian reserve by evaluating the number of antral ovarian follicles (AFC) through ultrasound and analysing serum levels of anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which are currently the most reliable indicators of fertility potential. METHOD: A total of 52 premenopausal women were recruited from the Maternal, Infantile, and Urological Sciences Department at Umberto I Hospital, Sapienza University of Rome.
