Polysomnographic characteristics of bipolar hypomanic patients: Comparison with unipolar depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Sleep profile in bipolar disorder has received little attention in comparison to sleep studies in major depressive disorders. Specific sleep abnormalities especially in REM sleep parameters have been detected in depression. The current study aimed at investigating whether bipolar disorder shares the same polysomnographic (PSG) changes or not. METHODS: All night polysomnographic assessments were made for 20 patients diagnosed to have hypomania, in addition to 20 patients with major depression and 20 healthy matched controls. All participants were examined using Standardized Sleep Q

Motivational factors and negative affectivity as predictors of alcohol craving.

Craving is thought to play an important role in alcohol use disorders. The recent inclusion of "craving" as a formal diagnostic symptom calls for further investigation of this subjective phenomenon with multiple dimensions. Considering that alcohol-dependent patients compensate negative physical/emotional states with alcohol, the aim of this study is to investigate alcohol craving and its correlation with drinking measures and affective personality dimensions. A sample of 135 alcohol-dependent patients (104 males and 31 females) was collected from a clinical setting. Subjects self-rated their

Substance Use in Adolescents with ADHD and Bipolar Spectrum Disorders: The Transdiagnostic Role of Emotional Dysregulation, Impulsivity and Hypersensitivity Traits.

Background/Objectives: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar spectrum disorders are at increased risk of substance use; categorical diagnoses may not fully explain individual variability in substance-related outcomes. This study examined substance use severity in clinically complex adolescents, focusing on the role of primary diagnosis and transdiagnostic dimensions (emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, cyclothymic-hypersensitive traits). Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 47 adolescents (aged 14-17) with DSM-5 diagnoses of ADHD or bip

[Differential diagnosis of slowly progressive schizophrenia in children].

Slowly progressive schizophrenia in children is marked in 45.5% of all the cases. This form of development usually cannotes a favourably developing variant of continuous and attack-like schizophrenia, characterized by a gradual increase of psychopath-like (schizoid) personality changes. For this reason it is necessary to differentiate the diagnosis of schizophrenia with the dynamics of psychopathy in children. The paper contains data of some criteria of a differential diagnosis of slowly progressive schizophrenia in relation to early childhood autism, psychic infantilism, obsessional neurosis,

A mania-related memory bias is associated with risk for relapse in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has shown that neuropsychological performance can predict outcome of psychotherapy. The present paper explores whether an affective bias in verbal memory is associated with recurrence of mood episodes in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD). METHOD: 76 euthymic adult patients with BD were randomly assigned to either 9 months of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Support Therapy (ST), and followed up for 2 years after completing therapy. At baseline, affective learning memory (Emotional Auditory Verbal Learning Test; EMO-AVLT) and other measures were assessed. Recurr

Diagnosis, Phenomenology, Differential Diagnosis, and Comorbidity of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder.

Diagnosing a pediatric patient with bipolar disorder can pose a challenge for clinicians. Children typically do not present with the full criteria for a mood episode and may have symptoms of other disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety disorders, and other mood disorders, which may complicate the diagnostic process. By diligently interviewing parents and children about behaviors, thoroughly reviewing family histories, and systematically ruling out other disorders, clinicians can provide an accurate diagnosis for their pediatric patien

[Neuropsychological syndromes of non-psychotic mental disorders of youthful age].

Seventy male patients with non-psychotic mental disorders of youthful age (mean age 19.2±3.7), were studied using A.R. Luria neuropsychological syndrome analysis. Patients were stratified into 3 groups by diagnosis: cyclothymia (20 patients), pubertal decompensation of schizoid personality disorder (30 patients) and schizotypal personality disorder (20 patients). It has been shown that the neuropsychological changes indicate the dysfunction of the amygdale/temporal region in patients of the first group and frontal/thalamic/parietal connections in the patients of two other groups. There were in

A Network Analysis of Perinatal Depression, Anxiety, and Temperaments in Women in the First, Second, and Third Trimesters of Pregnancy.

Background/Objectives: Although depression and anxiety are found to be affected by temperaments, little research has studied these relationships in pregnancy. The present study explored the associations among perinatal depression (PD), anxiety dimensions (state, trait, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)), and temperaments between women in the three trimesters of pregnancy through a network analysis approach. Moreover, differences in the severity of PD and anxiety between women in the three trimesters were evaluated. Methods: Women in first (N = 31), second (N = 184), and third (N = 54) tri

Rapid cycling bipolar disorder--diagnostic concepts.

OBJECTIVES: This paper reviews the literature to examine the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for rapid cycling in bipolar disorder. METHODS: Studies on the clinical characteristics of rapid cycling bipolar disorder were reviewed. To identify relevant papers, literature searches using PubMed and MEDLINE were undertaken. RESULTS: First observed in the prepharmacologic era, rapid cycling subsequently has been associated with a relatively poor response to pharmacologic treatment. Rapid cycling can be conceptualized as either a high frequency of episodes of any polarity or as a temporal sequence of ep
