Cystic echinococcosis is a chronic and complex zoonotic disease. The mechanisms underlying the parasite's establishment, growth and persistence are not completely understood, and are thought be modulated by a crosstalk through extracellular vesicles. Circulating levels and cyst fluid concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone and testosterone were measured in 30 premenopausal women with gross cystic breast disease. Specific radioimmunoassay procedures were used. Amounts of human chorionic gonadotropin exceeding 5.0 mIU/ml were found in cyst fluid of many patients, but not in serum. Progesterone and testosterone concentrations in breast cyst fluid were significantly higher than in serum (p less than 0.01 and p less than 0.001, respectively).

PURPOSE: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most neglected tropical diseases as per WHO which has an immense public health significance. Diagnosis of CE is difficult as specific clinical signs are manifested only after the hydatid cyst attains a considerable size. Immunodiagnosis is a reliable method of diagnosing CE.

In this preliminary study, aiming at the early diagnosis or the confirmation of neoplastic spreading, the levels of sialic acid (TSA and LSA, total sialic acid and "lipid bound" sialic acid) were measured and correlated with the corresponding cytologic findings in 111 body or cystic fluid samples taken from patients with suspected or confirmed cancer.
