Emphysematous cystitis is an uncommon condition in which pockets of gas are formed in and around the bladder wall by gas-forming organisms. The pH of urine samples from patients suffering symptoms suggesting urinary infection (e.g. dysuria, frequency, urgency) was measured while the patients were symptomatic and again when they had become asymptomatic. There was no correlation between the urine pH and the incidence or number of symptoms. No differences were observed between either the distribution or means of urine pH values in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. The clinical efficiency of tomicid used in the treatment of childhood cystitis was examined by employing clinical, endoscopic, microbiological, and immunological findings. A total of 140 children were examined. These include 78 with chronic obstructive pyelonephritis without cystitis and 62 with chronic cystitis. The urinary bladder was instilled with reference tomicid solution in 18 children with chronic cystitis during 10-12 days. Tomicid was found to produce bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects. Twenty-five adult female patients with acute cystitis were treated with 500 mg fosfomycin tablets, at a dose of 6 tablets per day for 7 days. The clinical effects were evaluated on the 3rd day, and the treatment was found effective in all the 18 patients evaluated. The cystitis recurred in 1 patient, one week after the treatment. As for the side effects, three patients complained gastric discomfort and/or diarrhea.

Two patients with eosinophilic cystitis are presented in this report. The first case was a 39-year-old man who was admitted to our clinic with complaints of pollakisuria, pain on urination and hematuria for a month, which had not been relieved by antibiotic therapy. He had both a family and a personal past history of allergy. Excretory urograms showed a mild bilateral hydroureter and small bladder with irregular filling defects. Psoas muscle abscesses associated with emphysematous urinary tract infections are rare. There are not many case reports about urinary tract infections such as emphysematous pyelitis and emphysematous cystitis complicating psoas muscle abscesses. Here, we report a case of an ipsilateral psoas muscle abscess following emphysematous cystitis and emphysematous pyelitis in an 81-year-old diabetic man. He was treated with prolonged antibiotic therapy and other supportive care.
