Electron transfer between the water-soluble cytochrome c and the integral membrane protein cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is the terminal reaction in the respiratory chain. The first step in this reaction is the diffusional association of cytochrome c toward COX, and it is still not completely clear whether cytochrome c diffuses in the bulk solution while encountering COX, or whether it prefers to diffuse laterally on the membrane surface. Defects of the respiratory chain are important causes of human disease and one of the most commonly used assays in the investigation of these patients is the measurement of succinate-cytochrome c reductase. The activity of cellular components of liver detoxification system was studied under the conditions of the absence of vitamin A stores. It is shown that a decrease of p-hydroxylase and N-demethylase activity of cytochrome P-450 simultaneously with a decrease of glutathione-S-transferase activity takes place in the liver microsomal fraction of vitamin A-deficient animals. Anopheles (Anopheles) nimpe, a new species of the Hyrcanus Group from the coastal areas of southern Vietnam, is described and illustrated in the adult, pupal, and larval stages. Partial DNA sequence data from paratypes are included for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I and 16S rRNA genes.
