[The value of cytologic investigation for postoperative assessment in patients with nasolacrimal obstruction].

Cytologic investigation was performed in patients with dacryocystitis after microscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy and in patients with lacrimal canaliculi orifice obstruction after microscopic endonasal canaliculocystorhinostomy. It allowed to monitor healing process, extubation time and to develop measures for prevention of dacryostoma cicatrisation.

Congenital dacryocystocele: diagnosis using ante and post-natal ultrasonography.

Congenital dacryocystocele is an unusual type of nasolacrimal obstruction. Treatment with antibiotics or surgical removal is practiced to reduce the risks of infection (acute dacryocystitis) and potentially lethal septicemia. Here, we report a case of congenital dacryocystocele, antenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis (intrauterine), and postnatal reassessment.

[Results of 12 years of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammation of nasolacrimal duct determines obstruction of the lacrimal flow and is called chronic dacryocystitis. Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) can solve this obstruction by opening the lacrimal sac directly to the nasal cavity, avoiding external scars in a simple, safe way. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We reviewed all cases operated using this technique between January 1996 and June 2008. We focused on demographic characteristics as well as the results obtained (subjective and objective improvements). RESULTS: We reviewed 76 Endoscopic DCR that were performed during…

Nasolacrimal injuries. Evaluation and management.

The tear drainage system is disrupted in 17% to 21% of nasoethmoidal fractures and, to a lesser degree, other midfacial fractures. When epiphora or dacryocystitis occurs, evaluation should include the Jones dye tests, probing of the ductal system, or dacryography. Dacryocystorhinostomy is the treatment of obstruction distal to the common canaliculus.

The surgical management of congenital lacrimal fistulae.

Congenital lacrimal fistulae are developmental anomalies of the lacrimal apparatus that are usually symptomatic, frequently causing epiphora and occasionally causing fistulitis or dacryocystitis. They may be associated with other abnormalities of the lacrimal system or with systemic anomalies. Complete excision alone, or in combination with nasolacrimal intubation and/or dacryocystorhinostomy is recommended for treatment.

Bilateral Primary Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Lacrimal Sac: A Case Report.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the lacrimal sac is extremely rare, usually representing secondary involvement of systemic malignancy. We report a case of bilateral primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the lacrimal sac presenting with bilateral medial canthal swelling for one month which was preceded by a history of chronic bilateral epiphora and a recurrent history of dacryocystitis. The symptoms partially responded to systemic antibiotics for the past three years. Clinical examination revealed bilateral diffuse erythematous medial canthal swelling extending to the upper cheeks. CT of the orbi…

An unusual cause of neonatal respiratory distress.

Nasal cysts representing cystic extension of the nasolacrimal duct are a rare cause of nasal obstruction and respiratory distress in neonates. A medial canthal mass, epiphora, dacryocystitis or preseptal/orbital cellulitis are the usual presenting symptoms; however, this case shows that patients may present with eye findings so minimal as to be overlooked.

A Giant Acquired Dacryocystocele in Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Dacryocystoceles are cystic dilatations of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct (NLD) due to the outflow obstruction at the … duct mucocele. Bilaterally, external DCR was performed. Histopathology was consistent with chronic dacryocystitis. DISCUSSION: Dacryocystoceles are rare in adults. They are either idiopathic or secondary to dacryocystitis, trauma, or dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. In this case, the long-standing NLD obstruction has caused distention of the NLD and the la …

A case of neglected silicone tube in lacrimal duct for 20 years.

PURPOSE: To report a case of prolonged placement of a lacrimal silicone tube for 20 years, with evaluation of the lacrimal duct using lacrimal micro-endoscopy and inspection of deformation of the lacrimal tube. OBSERVATIONS: This study involved a case of dacryocystitis in which a silicone tube had been placed in the patient 20-years previous and that was treated conservatively. Although granulation tissue formation due to dacryocystitis in the lacrimal duct was observed under lacrimal micro-endoscopy, subjective and objective resolution of symptoms, including granulated tissue formation, was …

Adult alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the lacrimal sac.

Lacrimal sac tumours are rare, but must be considered in the diagnosis of patients presenting with masses in the medial canthal region. We report a single case of lacrimal sac rhabdomyosarcoma in a 31-year-old man. The patient self-presented to the eye department with a 4-week history of discomfort, epiphora and a medial canthal mass. After no response to 1 week of oral antibiotics for a presumed diagnosis of dacryocystitis and the presence of firm mass extending above the medial canthal tendon, surgical exploration was carried out which revealed a lacrimal sac mass. Histologically this showed…

[Cefmenoxime penetration in human lacrimal sac mucosa after systemic administration].

Access to microbiological, pharmacokinetic and toxicological information is necessary for useful, controlled application of antibiotics in intraocular and periocular infections. It is important to know whether the antibiotic is effective against ophthalmologically relevant bacteria and if suprathreshold concentrations of the antibiotic can be achieved in the contaminated tissue. In the study presented we investigated the usefulness of cefmenoxime in cases of dacryocystitis. Lacrimal sac tissue--and serum specimens were obtained from 15 patients who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy 0.5 to 13 h a…

Bilateral nasolabial cysts: a case report.

The nasolabial cyst is one of the rarer soft tissue cysts, and presents beneath the alae of the nose. There have been few reports of an association between nasolabial cysts and dacryocystitis (an infection of the nasolacrimal sac). This case report describes a female who presented with bilateral nasolabial cysts and longstanding symptoms of epiphora (watery eye).
