Pretreatment attrition and formal withdrawal during treatment and their predictors: an exploratory study of the anxiety online data.

BACKGROUND: Although in its infancy, the field of e-mental health interventions has been gaining popularity and afforded considerable research attention. However, there are many gaps in the research. One such gap is in the area of attrition predictors at various stages of assessment and treatment delivery. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study applied univariate and multivariate analysis to a large dataset provided by the Anxiety Online (now called Mental Health Online) system to identify predictors of attrition in treatment commencers and in those who formally withdrew during treatment based on

Metabolomics applied to maternal and perinatal health: a review of new frontiers with a translation potential.

The prediction or early diagnosis of maternal complications is challenging mostly because the main conditions, such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, and gestational diabetes mellitus, are complex syndromes with multiple underlying mechanisms related to their occurrence. Limited advances in maternal and perinatal health in recent decades with respect to preventing these disorders have led to new approaches, and "omics" sciences have emerged as a potential field to be explored. Metabolomics is the study of a set of metabolites in a given sample and can represent the meta

A novel prognostic signature of seven genes for the prediction in patients with thymoma.

PURPOSE: A thymoma is a tumor arising from the epithelium of the thymus, mostly occurring in the anterior mediastinum. The incidence of this disease is low and research progress in this field is slow. Consequently, there is an urgent need to investigate the correlation between molecular regulation and the prediction of survival and prognosis in patients with thymoma. METHODS: We collected thymoma datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of TCGA datasets were then determined using R software. A gene signature was obtained by screening prognostic DEGs

MRISegmentator-Abdomen: A Fully Automated Multi-Organ and Structure Segmentation Tool for T1-weighted Abdominal MRI.

BACKGROUND: Segmentation of organs and structures in abdominal MRI is useful for many clinical applications, such as disease diagnosis and radiotherapy. Current approaches have focused on delineating a limited set of abdominal structures (13 types). To date, there is no publicly available abdominal MRI dataset with voxel-level annotations of multiple organs and structures. Consequently, a segmentation tool for multi-structure segmentation is also unavailable. METHODS: We curated a T1-weighted abdominal MRI dataset consisting of 195 patients who underwent imaging at National Institutes of Heal

A novel cervical image recognition framework based on feature cognitive enhancement for improved performance.

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer among women worldwide. Early diagnosis facilitates timely intervention and treatment. Traditional colposcopy is a widely employed technique for evaluating cervical lesions. Nevertheless, the growing number of patients with cervical cancer, and the rising workload of doctors may lead to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Therefore, many researchers use deep learning to make paramedical diagnoses of cervical disease. However, the current neural network models for cervical image recognition lead to poor diagnostic results due to limitations

A deep learning-enabled toolkit for the 3D segmentation of ventricular cardiomyocytes.

Segmentation of cardiomyocytes in microscopic 3D volumes is key to our understanding of cardiac (patho-)physiology; however, it poses substantial experimental and analytical challenges. Therefore, researchers often resort to inferring 3D information from 2D segmentations, which can lead to biased and incorrect conclusions. Deep learning-based methods are showing promise with respect to robustly segmenting objects in volumes acquired using various imaging modalities; yet, they have not been applied to high-resolution 3D cardiomyocyte segmentations, and suitable open-source tools and datasets ar

Towards a minimal core dataset for systemic lupus erythematosus studies.

OBJECTIVE: SLE is a complex, heterogenous autoimmune disease. SLE researchers do not always collect the same data, making comparative studies difficult. We aimed to ascertain what variables SLE clinical researchers commonly collect for SLE research. Our ultimate goal is to generate a minimal core dataset for future SLE studies. METHODS: In 2020, we designed and distributed a questionnaire to members of the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) as well as additional active research centres in China. Our survey included 26 questions about the types of data tha

Electric Field Modeling for Planning Individualized HD-tACS to Target DLPFC in the Aging Brain.

Tuning brain activity with non-invasive brain stimulation critically depends on optimized targeting of the brain structures of interest, especially in populations with accelerated interindividual morphological variations as they are typical in aging. Here, we explored the electric field distribution when targeting the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using High-Definition Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (HD-tACS) in both young (YA) and older adults (OA). We modeled the electric field of ten datasets (OA: n=5, 63-76 y/o, 68.4±6.5 y/o; YA: n=5, 18-39 y/o, 27.4±7.5 y/o) c

Leucine Motifs Stabilize Residual Helical Structure in Disordered Proteins.

Many examples are known of regions of intrinsically disordered proteins that fold into α-helices upon binding to their targets. These helical binding motifs (HBMs) can be partially helical also in the unbound state, and this so-called residual structure can affect binding affinity and kinetics. To investigate the underlying mechanisms governing the formation of residual helical structure, we assembled a dataset of experimental helix contents of 65 peptides containing HBM that fold-upon-binding. The average residual helicity is 17% and increases to 60% upon target binding. The helix contents of

MR-based spatiotemporal anisotropic atrophy evaluation of hippocampus in Alzheimer's disease progression by multiscale skeletal representation.

Increasing evidence has shown a higher sensitivity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression by local hippocampal atrophy rather than the whole volume. However, existing morphological methods based on subfield-volume or surface in imaging studies are not capable to describe the comprehensive process of hippocampal atrophy as sensitive as histological findings. To map histological distinctive measurements onto medical magnetic resonance (MR) images, we propose a multiscale skeletal representation (m-s-rep) to quantify focal hippocampal atrophy during AD progression in longitudinal cohorts from th

A somato-cognitive action network alternates with effector regions in motor cortex.

Motor cortex (M1) has been thought to form a continuous somatotopic homunculus extending down the precentral gyrus from foot to face representations1,2, despite evidence for concentric functional zones3 and maps of complex actions4. Here, using precision functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods, we find that the classic homunculus is interrupted by regions with distinct connectivity, structure and function, alternating with effector-specific (foot, hand and mouth) areas. These inter-effector regions exhibit decreased cortical thickness and strong functional connectivity to each oth

Physicians prescribe fewer analgesics during night shifts than day shifts.

Adequate pain management is one of the biggest challenges of the modern healthcare system. Physician perception of patient subjective pain, which is crucial to pain management, is susceptible to a host of potential biases. Here we explore the timing of physicians' work as a previously unrecognized source of systematic bias in pain management. We hypothesized that during night shifts, sleep deprivation, fatigue, and stress would reduce physicians' empathy for others' pain, leading to underprescription of analgesics for patient pain relief. In study 1, 67 resident physicians, either following a

Generating diagnostic profiles of cognitive decline and dementia using magnetoencephalography.

Accurate identification of the underlying cause(s) of cognitive decline and dementia is challenging due to significant symptomatic overlap between subtypes. This study presents a multi-class classification framework for subjects with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, fronto-temporal dementia and cognitive decline due to psychiatric illness, trained on source-localized resting-state magnetoencephalography data. Diagnostic profiles, describing probability estimates for each of the 6 diagnoses, were assigned to individual subj

Screening, identification and interaction analysis of key MicroRNAs and genes in Asthenozoospermia.

Background: Asthenozoospermia, one of the most common causes of male infertility, is a complicate multifactorial pathological condition that genetic factors are involved in. However, the epigenetic signature and mechanism of asthenozoospermia still remain limited. Our study aimed to confirm the key microRNAs (miRNAs) and genes in asthenozoospermia and demonstrate the underlying epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. Methods: We screened out and pooled previous studies to extracted potential differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs). GSE22331 and a published profile dataset were integrated to identify

CovidCounties is an interactive real time tracker of the COVID19 pandemic at the level of US counties.

Management of the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be a significant challenge to policy makers. This is in large part due to uneven reporting and the absence of open-access visualization tools to present local trends and infer healthcare needs. Here we report the development of CovidCounties.org, an interactive web application that depicts daily disease trends at the level of US counties using time series plots and maps. This application is accompanied by a manually curated dataset that catalogs all major public policy actions made at the state-level, as well as technical validation of the prim

Genetic screening of ANXA11 revealed novel mutations linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

ANXA11 mutations have previously been discovered in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) motor neuron disease. To confirm the contribution of ANXA11 mutations to ALS, a large exome data set obtained from 330 French patients, including 150 familial ALS index cases and 180 sporadic ALS cases, was analyzed, leading to the identification of 3 rare ANXA11 variants in 5 patients. The novel p.L254V variant was associated with early onset sporadic ALS. The novel p.D40Y mutation and the p.G38R variant concerned patients with predominant pyramidal tract involvement and cognitive decline. Neuropathologic

Intentional burn injury: Assessment of allegations of self-infliction.

This study investigates the question of whether there is evidence that suggests the possibility of self-infliction, or self-infliction by proxy, of burn injury among a group of asylum claimants in the UK who have attributed such injuries to torture, and how such evidence might be assessed. The question arose from the observations of doctors at the UK-based charity Freedom from Torture that increasing numbers of individuals from Sri Lanka who described a history of torture had suffered severe and disfiguring burn injuries from heated metal objects, and the suggestion from asylum decision-makers
