The prevention of sensori neural deafness.

A review of the present position concerning the causes of congenital sensori-neural deafness has been presented. Significant success has been achieved in the reduction, if not the elimination, of congenital deafness arising from the rhesus factor. Indications are that babies admitted to special care units show few children with severe sensori-neural deafness. The greatest opportunity for a significant reduction in the incidence of congenital sensori-neural deafness lies in the prevention of maternal infection by the rubella virus. There is a possibility that deafness could be avoided in many a…

Congenital rubella deafness: a preventable disease.

Over a 4-year period (1972-75) an unselected sample of 568 children aged under 4 years attending the Nuffield Hearing and Speech Centre were tested for rubella antibody. Sensorineural deafness was subsequently diagnosed in 349 of these children, and 83 (24%) of this group had rubella antibody. In contrast, only 19 (9%) of the remaining 219 children in whom sensorineural deafness was excluded had rubella antibody. The seropositive and seronegative children with sensorineural deafness showed striking differences in family history, history of maternal rubella, adverse perinatal events, and presen…

The early detection of childhood deafness.

Early commencement of habilitative measures is vital for a deaf child's development. This implies a need for early diagnosis. Some improveme … alse sense of security given the parents in these cases resulted in long delays before suspicion of deafness (based on informal observation) developed. If early diagnosis of deafness is to become the rule, a purposeful attempt to use risk criteria, coupled with improved screening programmes, will be the most promising avenues to follow. Improved education …

Congenital deafness and spontaneous CSF otorrhea.

Two patients with congenital deafness had spontaneous CSF otorrhea and recurrent bacterial meningitis. A careful workup, including tomograms, is especially important in the treatment of the closed type of CSF otorrhea. At operation of our patients, the leak was found to be at or near the oval window. The stapes was removed, and muscle was packed into the defect. The profuse flow of CSF was believed to be secondary to a wide-open cochlear aqueduct in the first case, and to an abnormal communication between the internal auditory meatus and the vestibule in the second case. These findings were th…

Pure word deafness. (Auditory verbal agnosia).

The selective inability to comprehend the spoken word, in the absence of aphasia or defective or defective hearing, is defined as pure word deafness (auditory verbal agnosia). Reported cases of this rare disorder have suggested the site of involvement to be strategically placed, interrupting fibers from left and right primary auditory receptive areas which project to Wernicke's are in the dominant hemisphere. Our patient is a 44-year-old male who suffered from an uncertain illness complicated by fever, jaundice and generalized seizures seven years previously. Following an apparent convulsion, …

Occlusive retinal vascular disease and deafness.

An 8-year-old white girl with a history of vertigo, nausea, and vomiting developed a progressive hearing loss, bilateral retinal arteriolar narrowing in each eye, vasoproliferation, and subsequent intravitreal hemorrhage. An attempt at peripheral retinal ablation with cryotherapy in the left eye resulted in retinal detachment. Spontaneous retinal detachment occurred in the right eye and was successfully repaired. Repeated intermittent hemorrhages occurred despite intraocular diathermy. Three years after onset, visual acuity was R.E.: 6/21 (20/66) and L.E.: light perception. She remains totally

Hereditary deafness in the dalmatian dog.

The temporal bones from 18 deaf Dalmatian dogs were examined with the light microscope, and the cochleo-saccular degeneration process studied. End organ degeneration is already advanced by the age of 4 weeks, whilst loss of neurons in the spiral ganglion was found only in adult animals. Both processes are first evident in the central portion of the cochlea, and increase in extent with advancing age, The implications of these findings for the management of non-conductive hearing loss in man are discussed.

Hereditary deafness and sensory radicular neuropathy.

We report a case of radicular sensory neuropathy and deafness. The patients appears to be one of a family in whom several members were similarly afflicted. Thus, this case fits the pattern of hereditary deafness and sensory radicular neuropathy, originally described by Hicks in 1922.

Sensorineural deafness due to osteitis fibrosa.

A 91-year-old woman with deafness died from renal failure. Autopsy revealed osteitis fibrosa cystica generalisata, chronic myeloid leukemia, renal atrophy, and hyperplastic parathyroid glands. The temporal bones showed senile osteoporosis, osteitis fibrosa, and chronic myeloid leukemia. The inner ears showed extensive degeneration of cochlear sensorineural elements. The perilymph showed a general increased staining reaction with hematoxylin-eosin that was most evident in localized areas, where marrow spaces of osteitis fibrosa communicated directly with perilymph. It appears that the active di…

Hereditary thrombocytopenia, deafness, and renal disease.

The syndrome of hereditary thrombocytopenia, deafness, and renal disease was manifest in at least eight members in three generations of a family. They had a lifelong history of bleeding, usually as epistaxis, bilateral sensorineural deafness starting in late childhood or the teenage years, and persistent proteinuria with varying degrees of renal dysfunction. Two members died at a young age, one from central nervous system hemorrhage, the other from chronic renal failure. Splenectomy and steroid therapy have been of transient benefit. There was dominant inheritance of the syndrome. Hematologic …
