Predictors of postpartum depression in threatened preterm labour: Importance of psychosocial factors.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is more common in high-risk pregnancies. One of the main causes of high-risk pregnancy is threatened preterm labour (TPL), a stressful event which involves psychological consequences for the mother. The objective of this study was to identify those psychosocial factors that may imply a greater risk of PPD in TPL women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was carried out, consisting of a sample of 149 pregnant women who suffered from a TPL during pregnancy, and 61 controls. At the time of inclusion, demographic, obstetric, biological, and ps

Possible involvement of microglial P2RY12 and peripheral IL-10 in postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is another type of depression, including emotional fluctuation, fatigue, and anxiety. Based on the specific event like giving birth, it can be speculated that PPD might have its specific mechanism. Here, we confirmed that dexamethasone (DEX) administration during pregnancy (gestational days 16-18) induced depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in dam (DEX-dam) after weaning period (3 weeks). DEX-dam showed anxiety-like behaviors in open-field test (OFT) and light-dark test (LD). In addition, DEX-dam exhibited depressive-like behaviors with the increased immobility t

Postpartum depression and health-related quality of life: a Saudi Arabian perspective.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The mental and physical functioning of an individual is partly determined by their health-related quality of life (HRQOL), which is a multifaceted component. Women who have recently given birth must have a good quality of life to provide proper care and development for their infant. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between postpartum depression (PPD) and HRQOL in Saudi Arabian women and to identify potential risk factors that could influence them. METHODS: This study comprised 253 mothers aged 1-24 weeks postpartum from several health centers

Altered extracellular mRNA communication in postpartum depression is associated with decreased autophagy.

We investigated whether extracellular RNA communication, which is a recently discovered mode of intercellular communication that is involved in a variety of important biological processes including pregnancy, is associated with postpartum depression (PPD). Extracellular RNA communication is increased during pregnancy and is involved in embryo implantation, uterine spiral artery remodeling, parturition, preterm birth, immunity, and the inflammatory response. Since immune anomalies are associated with PPD, we characterized the mRNA content of extracellular vesicles (EV) in a cohort of prospectiv

Polycystic ovary syndrome and postpartum depression symptoms: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome are more likely to experience several pregnancy complications including hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes mellitus, and preterm births than women without polycystic ovary syndrome. However, at present, there is limited research on whether polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with both anxiety and depression during pregnancy and whether this augments a woman's risk of postpartum depression, particularly among high-risk populations who have limited access to care. OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to assess the association betwee

Physiological linkage in pregnancy: Couples' cortisol, negative conflict behavior, and postpartum depression.

Within-couple concordance in momentary cortisol levels ("cortisol linkage") may reflect meaningful relationship dynamics. In this study, we examined couple cortisol linkage during pregnancy, associations with negative conflict couple behavior, and subsequent postpartum depressive symptoms. Eighty-two opposite-sex couples expecting their first child engaged in a conflict discussion, provided six salivary cortisol samples over the course of a laboratory visit, and then reported on depressive symptoms six months after their baby's birth. Couples' cortisol levels were significantly positively asso

Obstetric pain correlates with postpartum depression symptoms: a pilot prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Data linking labor pain and postpartum depression are emerging. Robust, prospective evaluations of this relationship while factoring other important variables are lacking. We assessed perinatal pain and other factors predicting postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. METHODS: Third trimester women, stratified by a priori plan to receive or avoid labor epidural analgesia, were longitudinally followed from the prenatal period through labor and delivery, until 6 weeks and 3 months postpartum. Electronic pain data was collected hourly during labor in real time, capturing pain unpleasant

Maternal depression in rural Pakistan: the protective associations with cultural postpartum practices.

BACKGROUND: Traditional postpartum practices are intended to provide care to mothers, but there is mixed evidence concerning their impact on postpartum depression (PPD). It remains unknown if there is a unique impact of postpartum practices on PPD separately from other types of social support, or if practices differentially affect those with existing prenatal depression. In Pakistan, chilla (چله) is a traditional postpartum practice in which women receive relief from household work, additional familial support, and supplemental food for up to 40 days postpartum. This study aims to understand i

Correlates of postpartum depression in first time mothers without previous psychiatric contact.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common disorder after childbirth. The strongest known predictors are a history of depression and/or a history of PPD. However, for a significant proportion of women, PPD constitutes their first depressive episode. This study aimed to gain further insight into the risk factors for PPD in first time mothers without previous psychiatric contact. METHODS: Women delivering in Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, from May 2006 to June 2007, were asked to participate and filled out questionnaires five days and six weeks postpartum, containing inter alia t

Antenatal depression and anxiety affect postpartum parenting stress: a longitudinal, prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression has been associated with parenting stress, impacting attachment and child development. However, the relation between antenatal depression or anxiety and postpartum parenting stress has not been investigated. We studied the effect of antenatal depression and anxiety and treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants [ADs]) on postpartum parenting stress. METHOD: Ninety-four pregnant women (part of a larger study examining prenatal AD exposure on infants) were prospectively monitored for d

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies during gestation are a marker for subsequent depression postpartum.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is not adequately diagnosed in many cases. Therefore, the question arises as to whether markers exist for depression. We investigated whether the presence of thyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOAbs) during pregnancy can be regarded as a marker for depression in the first year postpartum, particularly in relation to (overt or subclinical) thyroid dysfunction and other determinants of depression. DESIGN: This work was a prospective observational study. PATIENTS: A cohort of 310 unselected women (residing in the Kempen Region, southeastern Netherlands) were visited at 12 and 32

The efficacy of zuranolone in postpartum depression and major depressive disorder: a review & number needed to treat (NNT) analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and debilitating mental illness. Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts women globally and is one of the most common complications of childbirth that is underdiagnosed and undertreated, adversely impacting the mental health of women, children, and partners.Available antidepressant medications require weeks to months before showing effect. In this setting, zuranolone, an oral neuroactive steroid and a positive allosteric modulator of GABAA receptors, is an attractive alternative as a rapid-acting antidepressant treatment. AREAS COVERED: Th

[A study of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) on 859 mothers: detection of mothers at risk for postpartum depression].

The postpartum is a high-risk period for the occurrence of anxious and depressive episodes. Indeed, during the first few days after delivery, mothers can present postpartum blues symptomatology: fatigue, anxiety, disordered sleeping and a changing mood. Postpartum depression is characterised by a changing mood, anxiety, irritability, depression, panic and obsessional phenomena. It occurs in approximately 10 to 20% mothers. The exact prevalence depending on the criteria used for detection. The first symptoms usually appear between the fourth and sixth week postpartum. However, postpartum depres

Is the Predictability of New-Onset Postpartum Depression Better During Pregnancy or in the Early Postpartum Period? A Prospective Study in Croatian Women.

The researchers' aim was to examine whether it was better to predict new-onset postpartum depression (PPD) during pregnancy or immediately after childbirth. A prospective study conducted in Croatia followed women (N = 272) from the third trimester of pregnancy through the early postpartum period (within the first 3 postpartum days), to 6 weeks postpartum. Questionnaires on depression, anxiety, stress, coping, self-esteem, and social support were administered. Through regression analyses we showed that PPD symptoms could be equally predicted by variables from pregnancy (30.3%) and the early pos
