Assessment of Domestic Goats as Models for Experimental and Natural Infection with the North American Isolate of Rickettsia slovaca.

Rickettsia slovaca is a tick-borne human pathogen that is associated with scalp eschars and neck lymphadenopathy known as tick-borne lymphadenopathy (TIBOLA) or Dermacentor-borne necrosis erythema and lymphadenopathy (DEBONEL). Originally, R. slovaca was described in Eastern Europe, but since recognition of its pathogenicity, human cases have been reported throughout Europe. European vertebrate reservoirs of R. slovaca remain unknown, but feral swine and domestic goats have been found infected or seropositive for this pathogen. Recently, a rickettsial pathogen identical to R. slovaca was ident…

Ticks and associated pathogens collected from dogs and cats in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Although Ixodes spp. are the most common ticks in North-Western Europe, recent reports indicated an expanding geographical distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus in Western Europe. Recently, the establishment of a D. reticulatus population in Belgium was described. D. reticulatus is an important vector of canine and equine babesiosis and can transmit several Rickettsia species, Coxiella burnetii and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), whilst Ixodes spp. are vectors of pathogens causing babesiosis, borreliosis, anaplasmosis, rickettsiosis and TBEV. METHODS: A survey was conducte…

Days of Future Passed: Best Calibration Does Not Guarantee Reliable Forecasts of Future Tick Distributions.

Forecasting species distributions under future climate scenarios has become a standard application of Species Distribution Models (SDMs), yet their temporal transferability is rarely evaluated. We assessed the reliability of future projections using four widespread tick species (Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes ricinus, and Ixodes scapularis) with occurrence records spanning from 1961-2025. Models were calibrated sequentially using decade-specific records and projected onto subsequent decades, for which independent observations were available. Climate predictors derived fro…

The 'teabag method': tick feeding protocol and the effects of tick feeding on hematological parameters in the canine host.

BACKGROUND: Hard tick infestation occurs naturally in humans, domestic animals, and livestock species. Upon feeding, ticks transmit a wide v … kets, termed 'teabags,' containing 20 male and 5 female ticks each of both Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis applied with surgical tape beneath harnesses on five dogs to allow tick feeding. Canine hematological and blood chemistry parameters were recorded before, during, and after tick feeding. RESULTS: Successful feeding for 7 days was observe …

Theileria cervi-associated morbidity and mortality in a cohort of captive mule deer following relocation.

Collection of ticks from the affected premises yielded a mixed population of Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma americanum. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of DNA from ticks and affected deer was consistent with Theileria cervi. Diagnosis of Anaplasma marginale in cattle at the Iowa State University veterinary diagnostic laboratory 2003-2021.

Anaplasma marginale is a blood-borne rickettsia-like organism that infects cattle erythrocytes and causes anaplasmosis. This study reviews d … r, whether from necropsies or positive blood samples by PCR. The most common tick observed in Iowa, Dermacentor variabilis, is likely the main vector for transmission. Further surveys should be conducted to estimate seroprevalence by geographical location, the density of cattle populations, distribution of known vectors according to season, and strains of A. …

Endemicity of spotted fever group rickettsiae in Connecticut.

To compare rickettsial infectivity and seropositivity rates against spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, ticks and wild mammals were collected from three areas where Rickettsia rickettsii was thought to be enzootic in Connecticut during 1978-1979, and from four additional sites (with no reported human cases) between 1976 and 1979. Of the 1,001 Dermacentor variabilis examined by the hemolymph test, 59 (5.9%) contained rickettsia-like organisms; direct immunofluorescence tests verified the presence of SFT rickettsiae in 14 specimens. Prevalence of rickettsiae-infected ticks at Newtown, an area…

Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Clermont County, Ohio. II. Distribution of population and infected ticks in an endemic area.

The epidemiology of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in relation to the distribution of the human population and infected ticks has not b … differed from the endemic area in that most of the population was concentrated in one town. Of 1168 Dermacentor variabilis collected in the endemic area, 18 (1.5%) were infected, compared to four (1.2%) of 339 ticks in the other area. Past studies of infected ticks have not identified the specific strains or species of spotted fever group rickettsiae. In this …

Sympatric Occurrence of Five Exophilic Tick Species in the Levice Region (Southwestern Slovakia) and Their Infection with Tick-Borne Pathogens.

Among the 24 tick species documented in Slovakia, Ixodes ricinus is the most widespread and abundant. In some sites, 2-5 epidemiologically important tick species co-occur. Such sites represent hotspots for studying the co-circulation of tick-borne pathogens. Sympatric occurrence of five exophilic species (I. ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus, D. marginatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, and H. inermis) was confirmed in the environs of the Žemberovce village (Levice region, south-western Slovakia). Here, the seasonal activity and abundance of questing ticks and the tick infestation of game and sheep w…

Projecting the potential distribution of ticks in China under climate and land use change.

Ticks are known as vectors of several pathogens causing various human and animal diseases including Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. While China is known to have more than 100 tick species well distributed over the country, our knowledge on the likely distribution of ticks in the future remains very limited, which hinders the prevention and control of the risk of tick-borne diseases. In this study, we selected four representative tick species which have different regional distribution foci in mainland China. i.e., Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacent…

Molecular and niche modeling approaches to identify potential amplifying hosts for an emerging tick-borne pathogen, Rickettsia rickettsii subsp. californica, the causative agent of Pacific Coast tick fever.

Pacific Coast tick fever is a recently described zoonotic disease in California caused by a spotted fever group rickettsia, Rickettsia rickettsii subsp. californica (formerly Rickettsia 364D) and transmitted by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Like many emerging vector-borne diseases, knowledge regarding the transmission cycle, contribution from potential amplifying hosts, and geographic distribution of R. rickettsii californica is limited. We paired molecular analysis with comparative spatial niche modeling to identify vertebrate hosts potentially involved in the transmission…

Neurotoxin-induced paralysis: a case of tick paralysis in a 2-year-old child.

BACKGROUND: Tick paralysis is an arthropod-transmitted disease causing potentially lethal progressive ascending weakness. The presenting symptoms of tick paralysis overlap those of acute inflammatory diseases of the peripheral nervous system and spinal cord; thus, the condition is often misdiagnosed, leading to unnecessary treatments and prolonged hospitalization. PATIENT: A 2-year-old girl residing in northern New York and having no history of travel to areas endemic to ticks presented with rapidly progressing ascending paralysis, hyporeflexia, and intact sensory examination.
