Low back pain is a common but poorly understood entity. Features of degeneration depend on which component of the motion segment is predominantly affected, and include disk space narrowing, vacuum phenomenon, disk desiccation, vertebral osteophyte formation, disk herniation, and facet arthrosis, but these features do not necessarily have any relationship to symptoms. Since most episodes of back pain resolve on their own, and most disk herniations spontaneously regress, imaging of low back pain, although widely performed, is probably not necessary in most cases.

The dehydration of lactic acid bacteria for technological purposes induces multilevel damage to bacterial cells. This chapter provides protocols for analyzing functional and structural alterations following the dehydration of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus CIDCA 333 using vacuum drying technology. Protocols involving conventional microbiological assays (plate counting, metabolic activity), fluorescence (membrane integrity), and Raman spectroscopies (DNA conformational analysis) are presented, along with experimental tips and suggestions.

Pharmaceutical solid dosage forms necessitate long-term stability, which can be effectively achieved by removing excess residual water from the final products. The present study aimed to analyze and establish an effective combination of ultrasound and immersion pretreatment processes for drying Taikor (Garcinia pendunculata Roxb.) fruits. Taikorslices were first immersed in 10 % sucrose, fructose, and glucose solution. Then, the immersed slices were treated in an ultrasonic bath at 30 °C for 10, 20, and 30 min. This research studied how different types and concentrations of encapsulating agents impacted freeze-dried coconut water products. Volatile aroma and physicochemical product characteristics were evaluated. The encapsulating agents were maltodextrin 4-8% (w/v), polydextrose 4-8% (w/v) and xanthan gum 0.1-0.3% (w/v). In order to evaluate the effects of drying methods on the drying characteristics, quality (color, volatile oil (VO) content, shikimic acid (SA) content, trans-anethole content in the star anise volatile oil (TA-O)) and flavor components of star anise (Illicium verum Hook.f.), we tested five different methods (hot air drying (HAD), heat pump drying (HPD), far infrared radiation drying (FIRD), microwave drying (MD), and sun drying (SD)) with or without blanching to dry fresh star anise. Results showed MD had a shorter drying time than others, as well as the highest SA content (125.56 mg/g d.b.).
