Zinc is an essential element and necessary for various cellular functions. Preterm infants may have a negative zinc balance and are therefore especially susceptible for symptomatic zinc deficiency. We report on a preterm child with distinct clinical manifestations of zinc deficiency confirmed by histology and laboratory analysis who quickly healed with oral zinc therapy.

BACKGROUND: As HIV-infected infants have high mortality, the World Health Organization now recommends initiating antiretroviral therapy as early as possible in the first year of life. However, in many settings, laboratory diagnosis of HIV in infants is not readily available. We aimed to develop a clinical algorithm for HIV presumptive diagnosis in infants < 10 weeks old using screening data from the Children with HIV Early Antiretroviral therapy (CHER) study in South Africa.HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected exposed infants < 10 weeks of age were identified through Vertical Transmission Preventio

Irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD) is frequently observed in neonatal intensive care units and is often exacerbated by chronic loose stools. Despite standard treatments, erosive or persistent IDD remains challenging to manage. We introduced pureed green beans into enteral feeds as a source of fiber to improve stool consistency and reduce skin breakdown. This intervention has been highly effective as an easy-to-use and safe non-topical intervention for treating IDD.

Burns to the buttocks of a child are highly concerning for child abuse unless there is a clear history to support an alternative diagnosis. We report two cases of severe erosive diaper dermatitis presenting as buttocks and perineal burns caused by prolonged exposure to diarrheal stool. These cases underscore the importance of making the right diagnosis to avoid the undue psychosocial stress to families that comes with a mistaken diagnosis of inflicted injury, and further add to our understanding of diarrheal contact burns in the absence of laxative use.

Diaper dermatitis is the most common contact eczema present in early childhood. The main cause is an irritant reaction to urine and feces, which is facilitated by the occlusive conditions under the diaper, leading to hyperhydration of the stratum corneum (diaper dermatitis). In addition, diaper pressure and friction can increase the risk of skin inflammation, which also opens the skin up to other irritant agents, allergens, and infectious agents, such as candida albicans. However, a variety of diseases are associated with inflammation of the skin in the diaper region, therefore the term "diape

Cleansing and care of the diaper area require special consideration to maintain barrier function of the skin in this area and repair the barrier when it is compromised. Diaper dermatitis occurs commonly; understanding and modification of predisposing factors are imperative for caregivers. In this paper, we review important factors in diaper area care, including skin pH, the local microbiome, irritant and allergic potential of contactants, and application of topical agents.

AIM: To investigate skincare practices in the first 2 weeks of life in extremely premature infants across tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
METHODS: A web-based secure survey invite was emailed to the medical directors of tertiary NICUs. The survey included questions on various aspects of skincare practices in the first 2 weeks of life in extremely premature infants (born before 28 weeks gestation). The person most familiar with local skincare practices was asked to complete the survey and only one response per unit was requested. We performed a descriptive analysis.
RESULTS: W

Staphylococcus aureus (60 p. 100) and Candida albicans (50 p. 100) were mostly found in 73 cases of diaper dermatitis. They were present together in 16 out of these 73 cases. This study enables us to think this is a matter of opportunistic infection. Staphylococcus aureus (75 p. 100) and beta-hémol. Streptococcus A (28 p. 100) were found in 40 children with impetigo contagiosa. They were present together in 7 out of the 40 cases. Nephritis was never found either in those cases or in other 93 cases of pyodermitis.
