Plasma concentrations of testosterone glucosiduronate (TG) have been determined by direct radioimmunoassay in seventeen normal females, twenty females with idiopathic hirsutism, and in twelve female subjects with androgenetic alopecia without hirsutism, respectively. The corresponding mean concentrations (+/- SD) of TG were 0.47 +/- 0.18; 1.42 +/- 0.55; 0.96 +/- 0.22 ng/ml. We studied four patients from three kindreds who had normal male body habitus and external genitalia except for short penile length and gynecomastia. The case of a 16-year-old patient with incomplete testicular feminization syndrome is reported. The patient had phenotypically female genitalia except for clitoromegaly. Hormonal examinations revealed low plasma testosterone levels but a normal concentration of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, and radiological and surgical examinations revealed no development of Müllerian structures including the uterus and the adnexa. This happened in a family with a frequent occurrence of both hypospadias and cryptorchism.

In experimental murine cysticercosis caused by Taenia crassiceps, parasite reproduction is favored by thymectomy or by orchidectomy, and restricted by ovariectomy. Hormonal reconstitution experiments showed that 17-beta-estradiol increases parasite numbers whereas 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone was ineffective. Parasite numbers decreased with increments in cellular immunity but were insensitive to antibody levels. A possible immunoendocrinological interaction involving estrogen as a depressor of cellular immunity is envisaged in the control of cysticercosis.
