The search for a chronic experimental model for human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) in animals with cerebral lesions and neurological disorders has been difficult. Models with meningo-encephalitis have been proposed using Trypanosoma brucei gambiense or T. b. rhodesiense. Meningo-encephalitis is rare in infection with T. b. brucei. A series of novel aromatic derivatives based on the structure of methylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) was examined for trypanocidal activities in human and veterinary trypanosomes of African origin. The incidence of trypanosome infections, measured by a Berenil Index in experimental herds of 10 Zebu and 10 N'Dama cattle, was compared with tsetse challenge and with the prevalence of parasitaemia in local N'Dama at three villages in Gambia. To obtain a highly effective method for controlling babesiosis in cattle and buffalo, an epidemiological survey was carried out at Zuiyun village in Hubai Province. On the grounds of the epidemiological data, control measures which included preventive drugs and killing the vectors were devised. After two years of control no clinical cases of bovine babesiosis were found. The average number of ticks on cattle or buffalo decreased from 9-282 to 0-11.3.
