Discrimination of COPD and lung cancer from controls through breath analysis using a self-developed e-nose.

This work details the application of a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor based electronic nose (e-nose) system in the discrimination of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from healthy controls. The sensor array integrated with supervised classification algorithms was able to detect and classify exhaled breath samples from healthy controls, patients with COPD, and lung cancer by recognizing the amount of volatile organic compounds present in it. This paper details the e-nose design, participant selection, sampling methods, and data analysis. The clinical feasibili

Smartphone-based multispectral imaging and machine-learning based analysis for discrimination between seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis on the scalp.

For appropriate treatment, accurate discrimination between seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis in a timely manner is crucial to avoid complications. However, when they occur on the scalp, differential diagnosis can be challenging using conventional dermascopes. Thus, we employed smartphone-based multispectral imaging and analysis to discriminate between them with high accuracy. A smartphone-based multispectral imaging system, suited for scalp disease diagnosis, was redesigned. We compared the outcomes obtained using machine learning-based and conventional spectral classification methods to ach

Discriminating neoplastic and normal brain tissues in vitro through Raman spectroscopy: a principal components analysis classification model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Because of their aggressiveness, brain tumors can lead to death within a short time after diagnosis. Optical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy may be a technique of choice for in situ tumor diagnosis, with potential use in determining tumor margins during surgery because of its ability to identify biochemical changes between normal and tumor brain tissues quickly and without tissue destruction. METHODS: In this work, fragments of brain tumor (glioblastoma, medulloblastoma, and meningioma) and normal tissues (cerebellum and meninges) were obtained from excisional

Evolutionary aspects of the synuclein super-family and sub-families based on large-scale phylogenetic and group-discrimination analysis.

Over the last decade, many genetic studies have suggested that the synucleins, which are small, natively unfolded proteins, are closely related to Parkinson's disease and cancer. Less is known about the molecular basis of this role. A comprehensive analysis of the evolutionary path of the synuclein protein family may reveal the relationship between evolutionarily conserved residues and protein function or structure. The phylogeny of 252 unique synuclein sequences from 73 organisms suggests that gamma-synuclein is the common ancestor of alpha- and beta-synuclein. Although all three sub-families

Drug discrimination analysis of midazolam under a three-lever procedure. II: Differential effects of benzodiazepine receptor agonists.

Twelve rats were trained to discriminate 0.32 and 3.2 mg/kg s.c. midazolam from no drug under a three-lever, multiple trials drug discrimination procedure. In cumulative dose-response tests, midazolam s.c. (0.032-10 mg/kg) and i.p. (0.1-10 mg/kg) occasioned dose-dependent increases first in 0.32 mg/kg (low-dose) lever responding and then in 3.2 mg/kg (high-dose) lever responding. The benzodiazepines diazepam (0.032-18 mg/kg) and triazolam (0.0032-3.2 mg/kg) produced patterns of generalization similar to that of midazolam; however, chlordiazepoxide (0.1-32 mg/kg), lorazepam (0.032-10 mg/kg), fl

TriLock-FISH enables in situ discrimination of influenza cRNA and mRNA for single-cell analysis of viral replication and transcription.

Influenza A virus produces three RNA species-viral RNA (vRNA), complementary RNA (cRNA), and messenger RNA (mRNA)-whose synthesis and trafficking are spatially compartmentalized. However, the high sequence similarity between cRNA and mRNA hinders their distinction in situ, limiting understanding of the spatial organization of the viral replication-transcription dynamics. Here, triple-lock fluorescence in situ hybridization (TriLock-FISH) was developed to distinguish vRNA, cRNA, and mRNA in situ with high specificity. TriLock-FISH enabled a genome-wide, time-resolved single-cell atlas of RNA ab

"Not only standing for, but standing up for diversity": an intersectional qualitative analysis of how university students embody and resist discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Universities are key social institutions that shape student health, wellbeing, and future trajectories. However, they are also embedded in, and contribute to, existing social inequities. Students holding marginalised positions consistently report experiences of discrimination within higher education. Such experiences adversely affect their mental health, sense of belonging, and academic trajectories. Much of this research relies on single-axis analyses, failing to capture the complexity of discrimination. Therefore, this study takes an intersectional, qualitative multi-level approa

Discrimination of inherent characteristics of susceptible and resistant strains of Anopheles gambiae by explainable artificial intelligence analysis of flight trajectories.

Understanding mosquito behaviours is vital for the development of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), which have been successfully deployed in sub-Saharan Africa to reduce disease transmission, particularly malaria. However, rising insecticide resistance (IR) among mosquito populations, owing to genetic and behavioural changes, poses a significant challenge. We present a machine learning pipeline that successfully distinguishes between innate IR and insecticide-susceptible (IS) mosquito flight behaviours independent of insecticidal exposure by analysing trajectory data. Data-driven methods are in
