Sexual orientation disparities in the co-occurrence of substance use and psychological distress: a national population-based study (2008-2015).

PURPOSE: Although strong evidence documents the elevated prevalence of both substance use and mental health problems among sexual minorities (i.e., gay, lesbian, and bisexuals), relatively less research has examined whether risk of the co-occurrence of these factors is elevated among sexual minorities compared to heterosexuals. The object of this study was to (1) explore sexual orientation-based differences in substance use, psychological distress, and their co-occurrence in a representative sample in Sweden, and (2) examine if greater exposure to stressors, such as discrimination, victimizati

Chlormethiazole potentiates the discriminative stimulus effects of methamphetamine in rats.

Chlormethiazole is a positive modulator of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)(A) receptors used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal seizures. It recently has been reported to attenuate seizures engendered by acute and repeated exposure to cocaine in mice and neurotoxic effects of methamphetamine in rats. The aim of the present study was to determine whether chlormethiazole could also attenuate the discriminative stimulus effects of methamphetamine, a behavior predictive of the subjective effects of methamphetamine in humans. In Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg methamphetami

Motivational and discriminative aspects of context in renewal and reinstatement of operant behavior in mice.

Renewal, reinstatement, and other forms of recovery of learned behavior after extinction have been interpreted in terms of the concept of context. Context is defined here as the field of stimuli that is interrelated with the behavior of an individual in the present. Two important classes of stimuli that comprise context are discriminative stimuli and motivating operations. Two experiments examined interactions between discriminative and motivational aspects of context in the renewal and reinstatement of operant behavior following extinction in mice. In Experiment 1, mice received all operant a

Now you make false memories; now you do not: the order of presentation of words in DRM lists influences the production of the critical lure in Alzheimer's disease.

Why do some Alzheimer's patients produce fewer false memories than healthy older participants in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm, which was especially designed for the study of false memories in a laboratory setting? Using a very simple methodology, this study examines a new explanatory factor inherent in the paradigm itself: the order of presentation of the words in the lists. A sample comprising 149 participants (36 younger, 40 middle-aged, 37 healthy older adults, and 36 Alzheimer's patients) performed a DRM task with either a classic descending forward associative strength (FAS) pres

The face in the crowd effect unconfounded: happy faces, not angry faces, are more efficiently detected in single- and multiple-target visual search tasks.

Is it easier to detect angry or happy facial expressions in crowds of faces? The present studies used several variations of the visual search task to assess whether people selectively attend to expressive faces. Contrary to widely cited studies (e.g., Öhman, Lundqvist, & Esteves, 2001) that suggest angry faces "pop out" of crowds, our review of the literature found inconsistent evidence for the effect and suggested that low-level visual confounds could not be ruled out as the driving force behind the anger superiority effect. We then conducted 7 experiments, carefully designed to eliminate man

Acquired prosopagnosia abolishes the face inversion effect.

Individual faces are notoriously difficult to recognize when they are presented upside-down. Since acquired prosopagnosia (AP) has been associated with an impairment of expert face processes, a reduced or abolished face inversion effect (FIE) is expected in AP. However, previous studies have incongruently reported apparent normal effects of inversion, a decreased or abolished FIE, but also a surprisingly better performance for inverted faces for some patients. While these discrepant observations may be due to the variability of high-level processes impaired, a careful look at the literature ra

Menstrual cycle, tolerance and blood alcohol level discrimination ability.

Relationships between variations in blood alcohol level (BAL) and blood alcohol level discrimination accuracy were investigated as a function of menstrual cycle, hormonal variations, and behavioral tolerance to alcohol in 20 female social drinkers. All subjects consumed a moderate dose of alcohol on three occasions during one complete menstrual cycle. Subjects estimated their level of intoxication eight times during each drinking session. Each subject's behavioral tolerance to alcohol each session was assessed by a body sway procedure. Subjects also completed detailed questionnaires on symptom

Shape-similarity gain: A selection profile for simple objects.

Recent research has examined the selection profile-the pattern of enhancement and suppression of stimuli when allocating attention to a specific feature value. Support for several different selection profiles for simple feature dimensions (e.g., color, orientation) have been identified such as the feature-similarity gain and surround suppression effects. However, it is unclear whether the selection profile for more complex stimuli follows a similar pattern. Using a recently developed circular shape space, the current study assessed the selection profile for these simple shapes as an initial st

Graphesthesia on human fingernails.

The fingernails have been considered passive support structures that enhance tactile sensitivity by providing a rigid background, preventing the fingertips from slipping when interacting with objects. Recent studies have provided evidence that the people can perform basic tactile judgments of stimuli applied to the fingernails. In this study, we investigate whether fingernails also contribute to more complex, higher-order spatial processing. Specifically, we examine graphesthesia - the ability to recognise shapes or letters traced onto the skin - and assess whether this tactile capacity extend

Posterior parietal cortex plays a causal role in perceptual and categorical decisions.

Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) activity correlates with monkeys' decisions during visual discrimination and categorization tasks. However, recent work has questioned whether decision-correlated PPC activity plays a causal role in such decisions. That study focused on PPC's contribution to motor aspects of decisions (deciding where to move), but not sensory evaluation aspects (deciding what you are looking at). We employed reversible inactivation to compare PPC's contributions to motor and sensory aspects of decisions. Inactivation affected both aspects of behavior, but preferentially impaired

Mentoring Asian American scholars: Stereotypes and cultural values.

Students of color in higher education face myriad challenges that supersede the academic, including feelings of isolation, lack of belongingness, and overt discrimination that confer stress on top of their academic workload. One avenue to tackle these issues and reduce the negative outcomes associated with these stressors is the effective mentoring of scholars of color. Research has typically focused on African American and Latino scholars. Asian American scholars have received less attention despite studies showing high levels of anxiety, depression, isolation, and reported experiences of tar

"A boy, being a victim, nobody really buys that, you know?": Dynamics of sexual violence against boys.

The aim of this study was to present the dynamics of sexual violence against boys. Interviews were conducted with four male victims of sexual abuse between the ages of six and 10, as well as four psychologists employed in the health care system and involved in the treatment of sexually abused boys. Results were examined using thematic content analysis, based on six deductively identified themes corresponding to the following stages of sexual violence against children and adolescents: preparation, episodes, silencing, narratives, repression and overcoming. The results suggested that proximity b

Discrimination of Visual Categories Based on Behavioral Relevance in Widespread Regions of Frontoparietal Cortex.

Allocating attentional resources to currently relevant information in a dynamically changing environment is critical to goal-directed behavior. Previous studies in nonhuman primates (NHPs) have demonstrated modulation of neural representations of stimuli, in particular visual categorizations, by behavioral significance in the lateral prefrontal cortex. In the human brain, a network of frontal and parietal regions, the "multiple demand" (MD) system, is involved in cognitive and attentional control. To test for the effect of behavioral significance on categorical discrimination in the MD system

Perceived compliance in a pinch.

Handling a compliant object using a pinch grasp provides sensory information about deformation and resistive force from both index finger and thumb. In this paper, an object with rigid surfaces and composed of two compliant materials fixed on a central position is used to address how information from the two fingers is integrated into a holistic percept of compliance. Results indicate that with small differences in material compliance there is a small tendency to rely more on the information at the index finger. With larger differences in material compliance participants adopt different moveme

Influencing children's pregambling game playing via conditional discrimination training.

Past research has demonstrated a transformation of stimulus functions under similar conditions using gambling tasks and adults (e.g., Zlomke & Dixon, 2006), and the present study attempted to extend this research. Experimenters exposed 7 children (ages 7 to 10 years) to a simulated board game with concurrently available dice differing only by color. Following initial exposure to the game, participants were trained to discriminate between two contextual cues representing the relational frames of more than and less than. Following the training procedure, experimenters reexposed participants to t

Vibrotactile adaptation enhances spatial localization.

A two-interval forced choice tracking procedure was used to evaluate the effects of a pre-exposure to vibrotactile stimulation ("adaptation") on the capacity of human subjects to spatially localize a subsequent tactile stimulus. A 25 Hz flutter adapting stimulus was presented at a randomly selected position within a 20 mm linear array oriented transversely on the hand dorsum. Two flutter stimuli delivered subsequently were applied to different sites along the linear array; one to the same locus that received the adapting stimulation (the "standard" stimulus), the other to a distant site (the "

The third phase of HIV pandemic: social consequences of HIV/AIDS stigma & discrimination & future needs.

An overview of social responses to AIDS, characterized by high levels of stigma, discrimination central to the global AIDS challenge, as related to human dignity is described. Stigma is conceptualized as a problem of 'they' and 'us', or interactions perspective. Causes and consequences to enable the varied perspectives in understanding this third epidemic of social impact of HIV/AIDS are described. In the absence of an effective medical intervention, the social factors like stigma and discrimination attached to HIV/AIDS are a major obstacle in the curtailment of the disease requiring urgent ac

Retrieval of a face discrimination during suppression of monkey temporal cortex with cold.

Cells in the monkey temporal cortex that respond selectively to faces suggest that monkeys might have a brain structure similar to that in humans where lesions produce prosopagnosia, but effects of lesions on retrieval of face discriminations have been ambiguous in monkeys. It is possible that the stimuli in the monkey experiments were contaminated with non-face elements that could be discriminated by other parts of the visual system. In this experiment we modified the image of a monkey face creating two faces that were identical except for their internal features. We trained monkeys to discri
