Health-seeking in fragile and conflict-affected settings: how armed violent conflict shapes maternal and child health-seeking behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child mortality rates remain unacceptably high in fragile and conflict-affected settings, where insecurity, displacement, and systemic disruption hinder access to healthcare. Nigeria is one of the countries most severely affected, and continues to experience widespread maternal and neonatal deaths despite global and national efforts to achieve SDG 3.1. This study explored stakeholders’ perspectives on how armed conflicts shapes maternal and child health-seeking behaviours and outcomes in northeastern Nigeria. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed, involving Key

Affective Violence, Self-Control, and Extreme Mental and Emotional Disturbance Law.

Hawai'i's extreme mental and emotional disturbance (EMED) defense, drawn from the Model Penal Code (MPC), originated in State v. Dumlao with a conception of loss of self-control distinguished from insanity. For three decades, Hawai'i EMED jurisprudence has been read through a clinical theory treating intentional, organized action as evidence of retained self-control. The unvalidated theory displaced Dumlao's understanding while leaving its language intact. This article articulates a contemporary model of affective violence grounded in self-regulation theory, reactive aggression neurobiology, a

Psychologists' Perspectives on the Psychological Suffering of Refugee Patients in Brazil.

Worldwide there are 79.5 million displaced people, many of which face war, violence, tragic flights and struggles in host countries. Research shows augmented prevalence rates of mental disorders among refugees internationally, but little is known about refugee mental health in Latin American countries. Furthermore, only a few studies have taken into consideration the knowledge of clinical psychologists who treat refugee patients. The present study examines the experiences of 32 psychologists in Brazil regarding their refugee patients' psychological suffering and mental disorders. Semi-structur

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in war: a comprehensive review of subtypes, risk and protective factors, and therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: War-related trauma is associated with substantial mental health burden, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). These presentations often co-occur with depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, sleep disturbance, functional impairment, and moral injury, complicating assessment and treatment. Despite growing research on trauma in conflict-affected populations, recent evidence remains uneven across active-duty personnel, veterans, civilians, refugees, internally displaced persons, and children. METHODS: Studies published in English between 202

Floods and human health: a systematic review.

Floods are the most common type of disaster globally, responsible for almost 53,000 deaths in the last decade alone (23:1 low- versus high-income countries). This review assessed recent epidemiological evidence on the impacts of floods on human health. Published articles (2004-2011) on the quantitative relationship between floods and health were systematically reviewed. 35 relevant epidemiological studies were identified. Health outcomes were categorized into short- and long-term and were found to depend on the flood characteristics and people's vulnerability. It was found that long-term healt

The Association of Psychiatric Comorbidities With Short-Term and Long-Term Outcomes Following Spinal Cord Stimulator Placement.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes after spinal cord stimulator (SCS) placement are affected by psychologic comorbidities. It is part of routine practice to do psychologic assessments prior to SCS trials to assess for the presence of maladaptive behavioral patterns. However, few studies have sought to quantify the effect of psychiatric comorbidities on complications, reoperation, and readmission rates. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of psychiatric comorbidities with postprocedural outcomes after SCS implantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inclusion criteria included SCS placement betw

Effectiveness and implementation of Self-Help Plus (SH+) and Doing What Matters in Times of Stress (DWMS): protocol of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Global increases in armed conflict, forced displacement, pandemics and economic instability have contributed to rising levels of psychological distress worldwide, placing relevant segments of the population at increased risk of developing mental health conditions. This burden is particularly pronounced in humanitarian and low-resource settings where access to specialist mental health services is limited. Scalable, low-intensity, evidence-based psychological interventions are therefore urgently needed. In response, the WHO has developed transdiagnostic programmes, including Self-H

Implementation outcomes of the WHO psychosocial intervention problem management plus in humanitarian settings: a systematic review.

AIMS: Populations affected by humanitarian crises, including conflict, disasters and displacement, are frequently exposed to elevated psychological distress, while access to mental health services remains scarce. Problem Management Plus (PM+), a low-intensity psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization, has shown clinical efficacy. However, evidence on its implementation in humanitarian contexts remains limited. This systematic review aimed to synthesize available evidence on the implementation outcomes of PM+ and its delivery formats (individual, group and digital) i

Associations of psychosocial and individual factors with three different categories of back disorder among nursing staff.

Although back disorders are a major occupational problem for nursing staff, few studies distinguish different types. By means of a structured questionnaire, we performed a cross-sectional study on the prevalence of diagnosed lumbar disc hernia, chronic low-back pain (LBP) (at least 90 d in the preceding 12 months) and acute LBP (intense pain for at least 1 d) with respect to physical, individual and psychosocial factors among female nurses (n=587), nursing aides (n=228) and head-nurses (n=43) working in a university hospital (95% of the female workforce). Almost all respondents reported known

The push and pull factors: Adverse childhood experiences and their association with homelessness.

BACKGROUND: A widespread global risk for children is homelessness, often caused by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and leading to dire living conditions. Children may be compelled to live and work on the streets because of economic, social and psychological factors. Knowledge of the patterns of ACEs and their association with homelessness remains unknown in South Africa. AIM: The study explores the patterns of ACEs contributing to childhood homelessness in South Africa to identify immediate causes and underlying factors that sustain the issue. METHOD: A qualitative document analysis was
