Amniotic fluid embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation complicating hypertonic saline-induced abortion.

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) associated with disseminated intravascular clotting (DIC) is usually fatal. Such a combination generally occurs at the term of pregnancy or in the immediate postpartum period. A case of AFE with DIC following a hypertonic-saline-induced abortion, is reported. The patient was in the midtrimester with a live fetus. Prompt recognition and treatment of her condition ensured her complete recovery. Such a case has not, to our knowledge, been previously reported.

Amniotic fluid embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation after evacuation of missed abortion.

The combination of amniotic fluid embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation in obstetrics usually occurs at term associated with tumultuous labor. Maternal death almost inevitably follows. That these two crises may occur associated with abortion in herewith reported for the first time. Prompt recognition and aggressive appropriate therapy were responsible for patient survival with virtually no residual sequelae. Diagnosis was established on the basis of serial chest x-rays, pulmonary function tests, sputum, and serial blood studies.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation is associated with poor prognosis in patients with COVID-19.

This study aimed to investigate the incidence and significance of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A multicenter cohort study was conducted using large-scale COVID-19 registry data. The patients were classified into DIC and non-DIC groups based on the diagnosis on admission (day 1) and on any of the days 1, 4, 8, and 15. In total, 23,054 patients were divided into DIC (n = 264) and non-DIC (n = 22,790) groups on admission. Thereafter, 1654 patients were divided into 181 patients with DIC and 1473 non-DIC patients based on the DIC diagnosis on…

The impact of vascular endothelial glycocalyx on the pathogenesis and treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a complex disorder characterized by widespread activation of blood clotting mechanisms throughout the body. Understanding the role of vascular endothelial glycocalyx in the pathogenesis and treatment of DIC is crucial for advancing our knowledge in this field. The vascular endothelial glycocalyx is a gel-like layer that coats the inner surface of blood vessels. It plays a significant role in maintaining vascular integrity, regulating fluid balance, and preventing excessive clotting. In the pathogenesis of DIC, the disruption of the vascular endot…

Procalcitonin is a predictor of disseminated intravascular coagulation in patients with fatal COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The coagulopathies that present with COVID-19 are thrombotic microangiopathy and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC). Procalcitonin (PCT) levels have been shown to be significantly increased in COVID-19 patients in comparison with healthy subjects/asymptomatic coronavirus-positive patients. In this report, our aim was to assess the associations of the PCT level with DIC and the severity of COVID-19 infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional, retrospective study, 71 consecutive patients with severe COVID-19 (21 with DIC and 50 without DIC) were enrolled in th

Pseudarthrosis presenting as a late complication of meningococcal septicaemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Late skeletal complications of meningococcal septicaemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation are well recognised in children and are largely centred on the growing epimetaphyseal region of long bones. In this article we describe a case of pseudarthrosis of the mid-ulna presenting 18 months following a devastating episode of meningococcal septicaemia in a 3-year-old boy. Radiographs and MRI demonstrated the ulna abnormality. We briefly review the late skeletal complications of the disease and other causes of pseudarthrosis.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation as an unusual presentation of an Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Epstein-Barr viral (EBV)-infection usually presents as fever, sore throat, fatigue, lymphadenopathy and atypical lymphocytosis. We describe a patient with disseminated intravascular coagulation as the presenting symptom caused by a primary EBV infection.

[Infectious-toxic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation in a pregnant woman with influenza].

A pregnant female died of generalized influenza resulting in infectious-toxic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). DIC syndrome development was probably facilitated by placental detachment and increased blood coagulation potential characteristic for pregnancy. Multiple thrombosis of microcirculation vessels of the kidneys, pituitary, myocardium and other organs prevailed over hemorrhages typical for toxic influenza without pregnancy. Hypoxic damage was most pronounced in the kidneys (advanced necrosis of the tubules, focal cortical necrosis).

[A case of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in a cow with endometritis and fetal death].

Acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was diagnosed in a 3 1/2 year old cow of the Simmental breed. The cow was little less than 6 months pregnant and was admitted to the clinic because of severely disturbed general health. The most important clinical findings were increased heart and breathing rate, rectal temperature of 39.9 degrees C, nosebleed and petechiae on the nasal mucosa. Additionally, the cow showed petechiae on the vaginal mucosa, haemorrhage from the rectum lasting several hours after rectal examination and severe haemoglobinuria. Haematological and biochemical examin…

D-Dimer: An Early Marker of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Preeclampsia and Eclampsia.

Introduction Preeclampsia, a disease of unknown etiology, affects multiple organ systems and carries a grave prognosis for both the mother and fetus. Any hypertension and proteinuria developing after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normal patient warrants investigation for this disease. Coagulation studies may be deranged in preeclampsia and eclampsia due to their association with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In DIC, the underlying basic pathology is endothelial dysfunction and intense vasospasm; it can affect any organ but most commonly affects the brain, kidneys, uteru…

Effect of hypofibrinolysis on clinical outcomes of patients with septic disseminated intravascular coagulation.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the utility of thromboelastometry (ROTEM) in assessing hypofibrinolysis among septic patients, specifically the association of hypofibrinolysis, as determined by ROTEM, with septic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), organ dysfunction, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective analysis included adult septic patients admitted to Saga University Hospital from 2013 to 2017, with available ROTEM data. Hypofibrinolysis was assessed using the lysis index at 60 min (LI60) in extrinsic thromboelastometry (EXTEM). Based on their LI6…
