Aim: To investigate the role of dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis in preeclamptic and idiopathic fetal growth restricted (FGR) pregnancies. Material and method: In this prospective case-control study, a total of 110 singleton pregnancies with FGR (study group) (51 preeclamptic and 59 idiopathic FGR's cases) were compared with 68 healthy pregnant controls at the same gestational weeks (control group). Several CGHC motif-containing disulfide isomerases support thrombosis. We here report that endoplasmic reticulum protein 72 (ERp72), with 3 CGHC redox-active sites (ao, a, and a'), supports thrombosis. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is a multifunctional protein of the thioredoxin superfamily. PDI mediates proper protein folding by oxidation or isomerization and disrupts disulfide bonds by reduction; it also has chaperone and antichaperone activities. Although PDI localizes primarily to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), it is secreted and expressed on the cell surface. Amyloidogenesis from soluble protein requires conformational and oligomeric assembly steps. In systems where the precursor protein is natively unfolded, such as islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), forces and structural changes relevant to protein unfolding are not thought to participate in the assembly mechanism. Thus, fiber core structure elements should provide the dominant contributions to assembly kinetics. Here we show, however, that residues outside the amyloid core can influence the mechanism of IAPP fiber assembly. IAPP possesses an intramolecular disulfide bond between residues 2 and 7.

In a cross-sectional study, prevalence of dysfunctions of the central nervous system was assessed in 134 male workers exposed to different levels of carbon disulfide (CS2) in a rayon viscose plant and compared to 38 non-exposed workers. Carbon disulfide (CS(2)) is toxic to animals and aquatic organisms, and can also decompose to carbonyl sulfide (OCS) and hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) in aqueous environment. The objective of the study was to assess mortality in the cohort of the viscose factory workers occupationally and environmentally exposed to carbon disulfide. Male workers employed for at least one year during 1950-1985 in the production or maintenance departments, living in the vicinity of the plant, were enrolled into the study. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of carbon disulfide (CS2) on antioxidative stress systems of exposed workers.
METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and thiobarbituric acid test (BAT) were conducted on 67 exposed workers and 88 controlled ones in a viscose rayon factory to determine their serum cuprozinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and malonyldialdehyde (MDA) levels.

A total of 123 male viscose rayon workers who were exposed to carbon disulfide, and an additional 67 workers who were not exposed to any toxic agent in the working environment, underwent a thorough ophthalmological examination. The relationship between exposure and ophthalmological results was analyzed with univariate and multivariate methods. The most striking findings were strong associations between exposure and the 100-HUE color vision score and excess of microaneurysms in the exposed group. The current threshold limit value appeared to protect against these effects.

AIMS: To determine the concentrations of pentane (a marker of lipid peroxidation) and other volatile organic compounds in the breath of patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS: Volatile organic compounds were assayed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) in 88 subjects--25 with acute schizophrenic psychosis, 26 with psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia, and 37 normal volunteers.
RESULTS: The mean alveolar gradients of pentane and carbon disulfide (CS2) were significantly higher in the patients with schizophrenia than in the control groups.

Bis(trifluoromethyl) disulfide (TFD) was originally designed for use as an agricultural fumigant. Inhalation of toxic doses of TFD results in varying degrees of pulmonary edema.
