Exercise effects during diving and decompression on postdive venous gas emboli.

BACKGROUND: Exercise and diving have generally been associated with an increased risk of decompression sickness (DCS), thus accounting for the lack of studies involving exercise during decompression. However, theoretical and observational evidence contrary to this association motivated the present investigation on the effects of moderate, intermittent exercise during diving and/or during decompression on venous gas emboli (VGE) activity following a dive. HYPOTHESIS: VGE observed at both the precordium and subclavian vein sites after diving should be reduced if moderate exercise is performed d…

The diving bell meets the butterfly: identity lost and re-membered.

Jean Dominique Bauby, former editor of Elle, suffered a stroke to his brain stem that left him with locked-in syndrome. Subsequently, through blinking his left eye, he writes his memoir of this experience, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This paper explores the meaning of embodiment, especially as one's body bears upon one's personal identity. It explores the various challenges and threats to selfhood that result from Bauby's experience and recounts how Bauby rises to the challenge through his memory and imagination.

Diving pattern and work schedule of construction well divers in Taiwan.

Construction well divers in Taiwan reportedly suffer a high prevalence of dysbaric osteonecrosis. We studied five divers working at the same construction site. We recorded their diving methods, diving depths, bottom times, work patterns, water temperatures, and heart rates. We also monitored gas bubbles in the subclavian vein in selected dives. A crude but effective hot-water system protected divers against hypothermia and allowed them to work in 24 degrees-27 degrees C water. Divers worked approximately 6.6 h a day and progressed approximately 3.0 m a day while excavating an average of 148 bu…

Exogenous ketosis in breath-hold diving: Promise, paradox and physiological risk.

Exogenous ketosis induced by ketone ester (KE) ingestion has attracted growing interest as a potential strategy to enhance physiological tolerance to reduced O2 availability. Reported benefits arise largely from KE-induced hyperventilation, which can improve systemic and tissue oxygenation during altitude exposure and hypoxic exercise, potentially complemented by favourable effects on cellular bioenergetics. Whether these responses translate to breath-hold diving, however, remains unknown. Breath-hold performance is constrained by the integrated effects of progressive hypoxaemia, CO2 accumulat…

Beyond LLaVA-HD: Diving Into High-Resolution Multimodal Large Language Models.

Seeing clearly with high resolution is a foundation of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), which has been proven to be vital for visual perception and reasoning. Existing works usually employ a straightforward resolution upscaling method, where the image consists of global and local branches, with the latter being the sliced image patches but resized to the same resolution as the former. This means that higher resolution requires more local patches, resulting in exorbitant computational expenses, and meanwhile, the dominance of local image tokens may diminish the global context. In this

Comparative Genomics Reveals Genetic Adaptations to Diving-Associated Foraging in Anseriformes.

Diving behavior in waterfowl represents a remarkable physiological adaptation requiring extensive genetic modifications to cope with hypoxic and high-pressure underwater environments. We analyzed 25 Anseriformes genomes, representing diverse foraging strategies, and identified 13,873 orthogroups with 7991 single-copy orthogroups across all species. Comparative genomic analysis revealed significant positive selection signatures in diving waterfowl, with GO and KEGG enrichment analyses highlighting key functional adaptations in metabolic regulation, transmembrane and immune responses. Metabolic …

A Temporal Comparison of 50 Years of Australian Scuba Diving Fatalities.

Australian scuba fatalities over 50 years were examined to determine temporal changes over two consecutive periods, 1972-1999 and 2000-2021. The Australasian Diving Safety Foundation database and National Coronial Information System were searched to identify scuba deaths from 1972 to 2021. Historical data, police and witness reports, and autopsies were recorded and comparisons made between the two periods. Of 430 total deaths, 236 occurred during 1972-1999 and 194 during 2000-2021, with average annual fatalities of 8.4 and 8.8, respectively. The proportion of males reduced (83% to 76%) and med…

Diving deep into fish allergen immunotherapy: Current knowledge and future directions.

Fish allergy is one of the "big nine" categories of food allergens worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing with the higher demand for this nutritious food source. Fish allergies are a significant health concern as it is a leading cause of food anaphylaxis, accounting for 9% of all deaths from anaphylaxis. The gaps in treating fish allergies at present are the incomplete identification of fish allergens, lack of component-resolved diagnosis of fish allergens in the clinical setting, and the variability in sensitization profiles based on different fish consumption practices. Allergen immunot

Specialized diving traits in the generalist morphology of Fulica (Aves, Rallidae).

Foot-propelled diving comprises the primary locomotion-based feeding strategy for many birds, including families such as Phalacrocoracidae, Anhingidae, Podicipedidae, Gaviidae, and the diving ducks within Anatidae. While the morphology of specialized divers is well known, the corresponding morphology is less known for birds not as specialized but capable of diving, such as the coots (Rallidae, Fulica spp.). To compare the osteology of Fulica with other (non-diving) Rallidae, and with foot-propelled diving birds that are distantly related, we considered osteological characters, as well as the p…

Diving Deep: Exploring Dual Palatal Canals in the Upper Second Molar.

Dental anatomy exhibits considerable variation with the presence of additional canals being a common occurrence. The upper second molar typically presents with three canals and three roots; however, variations such as the existence of an extra canal or a root can pose challenges during endodontic treatment. Maxillary molar is characterized by an additional canal located within the palatal root, often exhibiting complex configurations and variations in morphology. Access refinement is critical to gaining adequate visibility and facilitating instrumentation. Meticulous exploration of the pulp ch

Diving into the Depths: Uncovering Microplastics in Norwegian Coastal Sediment Cores.

High concentrations of microplastics (MPs) have been documented in the deep-sea surface sediments of the Arctic Ocean. However, studies investigating their high-resolution vertical distribution in sediments from the European waters to the Arctic remain limited. This study examines MPs in five sediment cores from the Norwegian Coastal Current (NCC), encompassing the water-sediment interface and sediment layers up to 19 cm depth. Advanced analytical methods for MP identification down to 11 μm in size were combined with radiometric dating and lithology observations. MPs were present across all se

First Real-Life Data on the Diving Response in Healthy Children.

Swimming and diving are popular recreational activities, representing an effective option in maintaining and improving cardiovascular fitness in healthy people. To date, only little is known about the cardiovascular adaption to submersion in children. This study was conducted to improve an understanding thereof. We used a stepwise apnea protocol with apnea at rest, apnea with facial immersion, and at last apnea during whole body submersion. Continuous measurement of heart rate, oxygen saturation, and peripheral resistance index was done. Physiologic data and analysis of influencing factors on …

Construction and Validation of Newly Adapted Sport-Specific Anaerobic Diving Tests.

Breath-hold diving is explained as an activity that requires enduring muscle asphyxia and acidosis, high anaerobic capacity, and the tactic of the dive. Therefore, this study aimed to construct and validate tests that will mimic anaerobic processes in the specific media of freedivers. The sample of participants included 34 Croatian freedivers (average age: 26.85 ± 4.0 years, competitive age: 3.82 ± 1.92 years, their body height: 180.14 ± 8.93 cm, and their body mass: 76.82 ± 12.41 kg). The sample of variables consists of anthropometric indices, competitive efficiency (maximal length of a dive …

Maxillary sinus barotrauma with infraorbital nerve paraesthesia after breath-hold diving.

Barosinusitis, or sinus barotrauma, is a sinonasal injury and/or inflammation that results when the aerated spaces of the nose and sinuses are exposed to an uncompensated change in ambient pressure. We describe a 19-year-old male diver who presented to our clinic on the fourth day following a breath-hold diving session. During descent on a constant weight monofin dive at the South Cyprus World Championship he began to experience symptoms due to the inability to equalise the pressure, particularly in the Eustachian tubes and middle ear cavities. He felt pain and pressure in the upper left half …

Scuba diving after a heart transplant: excessive daring or calculable risk?

Over the past 50 years, outcomes after heart transplantation (HTX) have continuously and significantly improved. In the meantime, many heart transplant recipients live almost normal lives with only a few limitations. In some cases, even activities that actually seemed unreasonable for these patients turn out to be feasible. This article describes the encouraging example of a patient returning to recreational scuba diving after HTX. So far, there were no scientific experiences documented in this area. We worked out the special hemodynamic features and the corresponding risks of this sport for h…
