BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reliable blood donor screening requires more accurate measure of haemoglobin (Hb) than by either copper sulphate or the haemoglobin colour scale. The HemoCue haemoglobinometer has established a method for this, but it is considerably more expensive; a modified version (HemoCue 301) has now been developed with a cheaper reagent-free cuvette for use in budget-restricted situations. This report describes evaluation of the performance, the assessment of reproducibility and accuracy of this modified analyser against the reference technique for Hb measurement.

Infection is an inevitable complication of solid organ transplantation. Unrecognized infection may be transmitted from a donor and result in disseminated disease in the immunosuppressed host. Recent outbreaks of deceased donor-derived infections resulting in high rates of mortality and severe morbidity have emphasized the need to be cautious in using donors with possible meningoencephalitis. Screening of organ donors for potential transmissible infections is paramount to improving transplantation outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To establish and evaluate the methods of internal quality control in blood donor screening by nucleic acid test (NAT).
METHODS: After HBV-DNA standard quality control (QC) sample (60 IU/ml) was diluted by pooling 6 samples, the concentration was 10.0 IU/ml, which was approach twice of the low limit. When the pooling result turned out reactive, the pooling samples need to be split into single sample to process. Meanwhile, the standard QC samples were tested as well. The same batch QC samples were tested 20 times respectively, calculate the mean (x̄), standard deviation (SD) and CV.

This article reports on a recent Australian decision in which an Anti-Discrimination Tribunal was asked to rule on whether the exclusion of homosexual men from blood donation amounted to discrimination. While the tribunal ultimately found that the Red Cross's policy of "deferring" all donors who are men who have sex with men (MSM) within the last 12 months was "reasonable", the case is an important step forward for advocates of blood donation reform, given the consensus reached by many of the experts who gave evidence and importantly the tribunal's implicit rejection of the MSM donor deferral

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has developed into a well tolerated and viable option when deceased donor transplantation is not available. Transplant and advanced hepatobiliary surgeons from around the world have performed living donor hepatectomies consistently for decades with acceptable donor outcomes. However, optimizing the preoperative workup, donor selection, operative technique, and perioperative care will improve these outcomes. This manuscript reviews recent worldwide literature for the living liver donor.
