Pretreatment changes in drinking: relationship to treatment outcomes.

Pretreatment changes in alcohol use challenges the assumption that the major portion of the change process occurs after treatment entry. Greater understanding of the behavior change process prior to treatment has the potential to improve our understanding of behavioral changes during treatment. In this study, participants (N = 45) were recruited for a clinical trial examining multiple mechanisms of change in cognitive-behavioral treatment for alcohol dependence. Using data from both baseline and end of treatment assessments, several pretreatment intervals were created (e.g., a 2-week pre-phone

Risky single-occasion drinking: bingeing is not bingeing.

AIMS: To review the concept of binge drinking as a measure of risky single occasion drinking (RSOD), to illustrate its differential impact on selected health outcomes and to identify research gaps. METHODS: Narrative literature review with focus on conceptual and methodological differences, trajectories of RSOD and effects of RSOD on fetal outcomes, coronary heart disease (CHD) and injuries. RESULTS: Effects ascribed commonly to RSOD may often be the effects of an undifferentiated mixture of risky single occasions and regular heavy volume drinking, constituted by frequent, successive RSOD. Terrorism, distress, and drinking: vulnerability and protective factors.

Research has demonstrated effects of 9/11 on distress and drinking outcomes in individuals directly affected and indirectly affected across the United States. Fewer studies have addressed vulnerability and protective factors shown to moderate the effects of stress exposure. We report findings from a Midwestern workplace cohort study. Respondents to a 6 wave longitudinal mail survey completed questionnaires prior to September 11, 2001 and again in 2003 and 2005. Regression analyses encompassed measures of terrorism-related beliefs and fears, workplace stressors (sexual harassment, generalized a

Decision making and binge drinking: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral decision making, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is found to be diminished in individuals with substance dependence and other types of disinhibitory psychopathology. However, little is known regarding the relation between heavy alcohol use and decision-making skills in young adults. This study therefore investigated whether binge drinking is related to disadvantageous decision making, as measured by the IGT. We also examined the relation between decision making and impulsivity. METHODS: Latent class growth analysis was used to classify college students into

Reliability of college student self-reported drinking behavior.

College students represent a unique population among substance users, with developmental needs and motivational factors different from those of other adults with substance abuse problems. As most college-based treatment programs focus on harm reduction, the reliability of self-reported substance use is critical to assessing treatment needs and outcomes. This study examined the reliability of students' self-reported alcohol consumption for the month prior to entering a treatment program at two points in time. It was hypothesized that: (a) students required to attend a drug and alcohol education

Kidney toxicity of ingested uranium from drinking water.

BACKGROUND: In experimental settings, uranium is toxic to kidneys, but effects on humans are unclear. Ingestion of water from drilled wells is a source of high uranium exposure in some populations. METHODS: Uranium exposure was measured in 95 men and 98 women aged 18 to 81 years who had used drinking water from drilled wells for an average of 16 years. Urinary N-acetyl-gamma-d-glucosaminidase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, and glutathione-S-transferase; serum cystatin C; and urinary and serum calcium, phosphate, glucose, and creatinine were measured t

Negative consequences and cognitions about drinking and driving.

OBJECTIVE: Drinking and driving has been found to be a highly persistent behavior, even after experiencing negative consequences, such as arrest. This study tested the association between consequences of drinking and driving and cognitions related to drinking and driving (e.g., attitudes, normative beliefs). We tested whether exposure to negative consequences was associated with perceptions of risk associated with drinking and driving. METHOD: Participants were 938 college students. The sample was 57% female and primarily white (86%). Questionnaire measures were used to assess alcohol use, dr

Three drinking-water-associated cryptosporidiosis outbreaks, Northern Ireland.

Three recent drinking-water-associated cryptosporidiosis outbreaks in Northern Ireland were investigated by using genotyping and subgenotyping tools. One Cryptosporidium parvum outbreak was caused by the bovine genotype, and two were caused by the human genotype. Subgenotyping analyses indicate that two predominant subgenotypes were associated with these outbreaks and had been circulating in the community.

Recent heavy drinking of alcohol and embolic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence suggests that heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk for ischemic stroke, whereas light-to-moderate alcohol intake decreases the risk, but the role of different drinking patterns has remained unclear. We investigated recent light, moderate, and heavy alcohol drinking and former heavy drinking as risk factors for acute ischemic brain infarction by etiological subtype of stroke. METHODS: We compared 212 consecutive patients aged between 16 and 60 years, who were completely evaluated for the etiology of their ischemic stroke, with 274 contro

Compulsive water drinking in infants and young children.

The management and follow-up of five patients with asymptomatic compulsive water drinking is described. Three out of the five patients were female and two were male. The age range was 6 to 20 months. All the patients presented with polyuria or polydipsia and urine osmolalities of 39 to 112 mOsm/L. The daily fluid intake ranged from 3.5 to 5 L, and the urine output was 11 to 14 mL/kg/hr. Significant improvement was noticed after a gradual weaning process. As fluid intake returned to normal, urine osmolalities reached values between 210 and 500 mOsm/L after 4 weeks, and between 630 and 800 mOsm/

Problem drinking in delinquent and nondelinquent adolescent males.

Clinical evidence suggests that problem drinking among adolescent delinquents is more severe than among nondelinquents and is accompanied by greater social pathology. This investigation explored this question empirically by comparing samples of delinquent (n = 49) and nondelinquent (n = 100) adolescent male drinkers matched on age and race and controlling for community size and region of the country. Criteria for problem drinking and other measures duplicated those developed for a national probability survey of teenaged drinking practices conducted in the United States during 1974-1975. Result

[Hyponatremia after very heavy beer drinking (author's transl)].

Severe water and electrolyte disturbances were observed in a patient after a bout of very heavy beer drinking (30 liters in 6 days). On admission she was found to have hypokalemia (2.2 mEq/I), metabolic alkalosis (pHa: 7.55-total CO2: 40 mEq/I), and more particularly hyponatremia (109 mEq/I), responsible for the typical neurological signs of water intoxication (hyponatremic encephalopathy). There was a positive cumulative return of sodium (570 mEq) and chloride (900 mEq) levels, and normal conditions were restored without significant modifications in water balance or weight. No other etiology,

Electric shock produced drinking in the squirrel monkey.

Squirrel monkeys were periodically exposed to brief electric tail shocks in a test environment containing a rubber hose, response lever, and a water spout. Shock delivery produced preshock lever pressing and postshock hose biting. Additionally, all subjects displayed licking responses following postshock biting-attack episodes. Further experiments showed that licking was: (1) influenced by hours of water deprivation; (2) drinking behavior; (3) the direct result of shock delivery; and (4) developed spontaneously in naive subjects with or without opportunities for hose biting or lever pressing.
