BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigated changes in the severity of gastric metaplasia (GM) of the duodenal mucosa before and after ulcer healing and Helicobacter pylori eradication. It also investigated whether deformity of the duodenal bulb affects the severity of GM and the likelihood of ulcer recurrence.

Thirty dyspeptic patients with endoscopic evidence of mild to moderate (nonerosive) duodenitis were randomly assigned to treatment with 50 mg of pirenzepine twice daily or 2 gm of sucralfate twice daily for four weeks. Posttreatment endoscopy revealed normalization of duodenal mucosa in half of the patients in each treatment group. The severity of dyspeptic symptoms was significantly reduced in both groups, with no significant between-group differences.

During a 3 1/2-year period, cardiac arrhythmias were identified in 6 of 67 horses diagnosed with duodenitis/proximal jejunitis (DPJ). Arrhythmias were detected by auscultation of irregular cardiac rhythm and subsequently were characterized by electrocardiographic evaluation. Arrhythmias included frequent second-degree atrioventricular block, ventricular ectopic depolarizations, and atrioventricular conduction disturbance.
