Correlations between geomagnetic field and global occurrence of cardiovascular diseases: evidence from 204 territories in different latitude.

BACKGROUND: The correlation between stable geomagnetic fields and unstable geomagnetic activities with mortality, incidence, and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains ambiguous. METHOD: To investigate the correlations between geomagnetic field (GMF) intensity and geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) and CVDs events in global, long-period scale, global and 204 countries and territories were included on the base of 2019 Global Burden of Disease study (GBD 2019). Data of GMF intensity, GMD frequency, CVDs events, weather and health economic indicators from 1996 to 2019 of included locati

Childhood modifiable risk factors and later life chronic kidney disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Relationships between adulthood modifiable risk factors and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are well-established, but associations with childhood risk factors are unclear. This study systematically assesses the published evidence about childhood modifiable risk factors and adulthood CKD. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science to 6th May 2022. Articles were included if (1) they were population-based longitudinal studies, (2) exposures were potentially modifiable, for example through pharmacological or lifestyle modifications, including clinical conditions/measures (d

Personality and health as predictors of income decrease in old age: findings from the longitudinal SMILE study.

BACKGROUND: There is much evidence for the influence of low socio-economic status on poor health. It is, however, also important to study the ways in which people attain and retain their socio-economic status and the factors that predict changes in socio-economic status, such as a decrease in income. Such mobility also occurs in older populations, in which financial and health-related changes are very common, especially after retirement. METHODS: Three years of follow-up data from 1443 Dutch men and women aged 55 years and older who participated in the Study on Medical Information and Lifesty

Analysis of factors influencing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and its prediction in Weifang, China from 2013 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology and trends of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Weifang, China (2013-2021) and to guide prevention strategies. METHODS: The study examined the prevalence and incidence trends of HFRS in Weifang (2013-2021). Spearman correlation and wavelet analysis were employed to explore variable relationships and their associations with HFRS incidence. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to identify key risk factors, while structural equation modeling (SEM) quantified direct and indirect pathways influencing HFRS transmission.

Risk factors for suicidal behavior in adolescents.

Adolescent suicide is today a public health problem among the leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults. There seems to be many reasons for this increase (which has different trends in different populations), but associations have been found with increased substance abuse, television and video violence, socio-economic status and easy access to firearms. Gender differences have also been observed with crime, suicide and substance abuse higher among males, while eating disorder, depression and suicidal behavior more prevalent among females. This paper will review prevalence a

Risk factors for perinatal intimate partner violence: a global systematic review and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in different regions worldwide. However, there is still insufficient systematic evidence on the risk factors for perinatal IPV across various regions and socioeconomic levels, which presents challenges in developing targeted prevention programs. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analyses was to identify the risk factors for perinatal IPV across various regions and socioeconomic levels worldwide. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted across multiple electronic databases, including Pu

Economic roots of cognitive decline: Tracing early-life shocks to late-life health.

This study investigates the long-term associations between early-life economic shocks and cognitive decline in later years, emphasizing the mediating roles of education, unemployment, and health-related factors. Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we examine the relationship between childhood economic adversity, such as parental job loss, poverty, and limited access to educational material at home, and cognitive performance in old age. Applying the Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method, we assess how economic and health factors throughout life mediate this

Heterogeneous gender gaps in mental wellbeing: Do women with low economic status face the biggest gender gaps?

Gender differences in depression are globally documented across a wide range of studies that analyse self-reports of depressive symptoms or clinical diagnoses. Extensive research fails to identify any single reason for this finding but given systematic variation in depressive symptomatology across social groups, gender differences must derive at least partly from environmental or social factors. Among the social factors that are considered most important are those relating to gender differences in socio-economic status and the underlying gender division of labor. In this study, we add to exist

Diet quality in older age: the influence of childhood and adult socio-economic circumstances.

Socio-economic gradients in diet quality are well established. However, the influence of material socio-economic conditions particularly in childhood, and the use of multiple disaggregated socio-economic measures on diet quality have been little studied in the elderly. In the present study, we examined childhood and adult socio-economic measures, and social relationships, as determinants of diet quality cross-sectionally in 4252 older British men (aged 60-79 years). A FFQ provided data on daily fruit and vegetable consumption and the Elderly Dietary Index (EDI), with higher scores indicating b

Future Projections of Burned Area in Europe Highlight the Importance of Human Action.

Wildfires are often a natural part of many European ecosystems, but human activities through land use, other socio-economic factors and climate change have significantly changed how fires behave. Anthropogenic climate change is already intensifying fire-prone weather and increasing wildfire risk across Europe with risk expected to grow sharply in coming decades. Past experience suggests that human action, such as fuel management and improved fire suppression capacity, can reduce wildfire spread and intensity. However, whether current or future efforts can counter rising risks under continued c

Nudging oral habits; application of behavioral economics in oral health promotion: a critical review.

BACKGROUND: Oral health disorders significantly contribute to the global incidence of chronic diseases. Nudge interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing people's decision-making and self-management capacities in a cost-efficient manner. As a result, these interventions could be valuable tools for fostering improved oral care habits. This critical review explores potential behavioral nudges applicable to promoting oral health. METHODS: A thorough electronic literature search was conducted on Scopus, Embase, and PubMed databases for papers published post-2008. The search focused

Physical child abuse demands increased awareness during health and socioeconomic crises like COVID-19.

Background and purpose - Physical abuse of children, i.e., nonaccidental injury (NAI) including abusive head trauma (AHT) is experienced by up to 20% of children; however, only 0.1% are diagnosed. Healthcare professionals issue less than 20% of all reports suspecting NAI to the responsible authorities. Insufficient knowledge concerning NAI may partly explain this low percentage. The risk of NAI is heightened during health and socioeconomic crises such as COVID-19 and thus demands increased awareness. This review provides an overview and educational material on NAI and its clinical presentation
