Depressive Symptoms among Economically Disadvantaged African American Older Adults in South Los Angeles.

BACKGROUND: Although social, behavioral, and health factors correlate with depressive symptoms, less is known about these links among economically disadvantaged African American (AA) older adults. OBJECTIVE: To study social, behavioral, and health correlates of depressive symptoms among economically disadvantaged AA older adults. METHODS: This survey was conducted in South Los Angeles between 2015 and 2018. A total number of 740 AA older adults (age ≥55 years) were entered to this study. Independent variables were gender, age, educational attainment, financial difficulties, living alone, mar

Proposing an identity-in-context framework for culturally responsive evaluation.

Evaluation exists within social, cultural, environmental, and economic contexts defined by human experience. Taking an identity-oriented, culturally responsive approach to evaluation highlights the consequences of evaluation and how they relate to the social reality and context of priority populations. This article presents a conceptual framework for culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) practice using identity as an orienting construct. The Identity-in-Context Framework (ICF) can help evaluators and practitioners be cognizant of cultural implications for practice and explore how identity int

Economic hardship, infant respiratory sinus arrhythmia development, and maternal affectionate touch: Resilience in Mexican American families.

Economic hardship confers risk for a multitude of child development outcomes including regulatory development. A wealth of research demonstrates the adverse influence of economic hardship on behavioral regulation, but less clarity exists for physiological levels of regulation. Further, little work has examined how culturally specific parenting practices can promote adaptive physiological development. The present study drew data from 322 low-income, Mexican American mother-infant dyads to examine how economic hardship, parental affectionate touch, and their interactions would relate to changes

Dry eye: prevalence, utilization, and economic implications.

Dry eye syndrome is far more prevalent than previously considered. There are significant comorbidities, associated diseases, and behavioral and environmental factors that may contribute to the severity of dry eye. Dry eye syndrome has significant economic implications, including costs associated with increased health care utilization, missed school and work, and leisure and quality-of-life issues. Dry eye presents important economic challenges to patients, physicians, and health care delivery organizations.

Neighborhood Influences on Cardiovascular Health: A Concept Mapping Study With Young Black Men Living in Southern Black Communities.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) is both a concept and a measure that refers to health behaviors and clinical factors that help prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). The neighborhood environment is increasingly recognized as a crucial social determinant of CVH, especially for Black populations. The purpose of this participatory concept mapping (CM) study was to (1) understand perspectives on neighborhood features that influence health and (2) identify which features are most important to achieving CVH behaviors for young Black men. We conducted CM with Black men (n = 30), ages 18 to 34, living in t

Determinants of intimate partner controlling behavior targeting women in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intimate partner controlling behavior toward women is an important form of intimate partner violence (IPV), both in terms of limiting women's daily lives and in terms of reproducing patriarchal culture and male dominance in societies at the micro level. A limited number of studies in the literature have identified the male intimate partner's controlling behavior as a dependent variable, which is important for understanding the determinants of this type of IPV. There is also a significant gap in the literature in terms of studies focusing on the case of Türkiye. Thus, the main a

To appreciate the influence of contributed determinants on dental care utilization in the context of socio-economic inequalities.

BACKGROUND: To appreciate dental care utilization in ‌the context of socio-economic inequalities, it is imperative to identify sources of inequalities and evaluate the extent to which dental care utilization is still related to socio-economic status. This study aimed to quantify the influence of contributed determinants on dental care utilization in the context of socio-economic inequalities amongst adults residing in Tehran metropolis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional community-based study, a stratified random sample of 1,510 subjects aged over 18 years was investigated by the zero-inflated

Family and community driven response to intimate partner violence in post-conflict settings.

This study explores risk factors, individual and family consequences and community-driven responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) in post-conflict eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This qualitative study was conducted in 3 rural villages in South Kivu Province of DRC, an area that has experienced prolonged conflict. Participants included 13 female survivors and 5 male perpetrators of IPV as reported during baseline data collection for the parent study, an impact evaluation of the Congolese-led livestock microfinance program, Pigs for Peace. Participants described social and beha

A multilevel study of the associations between economic and social context, stage of adolescence, and physical activity and body mass index.

OBJECTIVE: Prevention efforts targeting adolescent risk behavior have had limited effectiveness, partly because of the reliance on individual-level interventions that do not consider the context within which behavior occurs. In addition, the role of development has not been well studied regarding its possible moderating effects on contextual influences on behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of economic and social context on the odds of being inactive or having above-normal weight and whether the influence differed on the basis of stage of adolescence. METHODS: Ana

Interaction of Human Behavioral Factors Shapes the Transmission of Arboviruses by Aedes and Culex Mosquitoes.

Arboviruses, i.e., viruses transmitted by blood-sucking arthropods, trigger significant global epidemics. Over the past 20 years, the frequency of the (re-)emergence of these pathogens, particularly those transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, has dramatically increased. Therefore, understanding how human behavior is modulating population exposure to these viruses is of particular importance. This synthesis explores human behavioral factors driving human exposure to arboviruses, focusing on household surroundings, socio-economic status, human activities, and demographic factors. Household

Health, Economic, and Social Disparities among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Sexually Diverse Adults: Results from a Population-Based Study.

We investigated health, economic, and social disparities among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and sexually diverse adults, 18 years and older. Analyzing 2011-2019 Washington State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (N = 109,527), we estimated and compared the prevalence rates of background characteristics, economic and social indicators, health outcomes, chronic conditions, health care access, health behaviors, and preventive care by gender and sexual identity. Sexual minority adults reported heightened risks of poor general health, physical and mental health, disability, subjective cognitive

Neurocognitive assessment in obsessive compulsive disorder patients: Adherence to behavioral decision models.

In economics, models of decision-making under risk are widely investigated. Since many empirical studies have shown patterns in choice behavior that classical models fail to predict, several descriptive theories have been developed. Due to an evident phenotypic heterogeneity, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients have shown a general deficit in decision making when compared to healthy control subjects (HCs). However, the direction for impairment in decision-making in OCD patients is still unclear. Hence, bridging decision-making models widely used in the economic literature with mental

Subthalamic Neural Activity Patterns Anticipate Economic Risk Decisions in Gambling.

Economic decision-making is disrupted in individuals with gambling disorder, an addictive behavior observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients receiving dopaminergic therapy. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is involved in the inhibition of impulsive behaviors; however, its role in impulse control disorders and addiction is still unclear. Here, we recorded STN local field potentials (LFPs) in PD patients with and without gambling disorder during an economic decision-making task. Reaction times analysis showed that for all patients, the decision whether to risk preceded task onset. We compared t

Economic evaluation in implementation science: Making the business case for implementation strategies.

Implementation researchers have made notable progress in developing and testing implementation strategies (i.e., highly-specified methods used to help providers improve uptake of mental health evidence-based practices: EBPs). Yet, implementation strategies are not widely applied in healthcare organizations to improve delivery of EBPs. Economic considerations are a key factor influencing the use of implementation strategies to deliver and sustain mental health evidence-based practices, in part because many health care leaders are reluctant to invest in ongoing implementation strategy support wi

A psycho-economic model of ecstasy consumption and related consequences: a multi-site study with community samples.

Becker and Murphy's (1988) theory of rational behavior suggests that economic factors play an influential role in the decision leading to drug consumption and possibly dependence. Psychological models, on the other hand, emphasize internal regulatory cues that motivate drug use and play a contributory role in dependence. Until now, the confluence of both economic and psychological models has not been tested empirically. The present study used latent-variable structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the influence of both economic (social anomie, unit price, and time spent acquiring drugs)

Modeling COVID-19 response in Cuba: a hybrid approach combining agent-based modeling and time series analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted vulnerable populations, such as low-income households, exacerbating existing health and economic challenges. In Cuba, the crisis exposed the effects of long-standing economic difficulties, worsened by sanctions, but the country's robust public health system and independent vaccine development enabled an effective response. This study addresses the gap in understanding how socio-economic factors and individual behaviors interact to influence disease spread. It proposes a hybrid, efficient, and parsimonious model combining ABM (Agent-Based Mo

Higher-order executive functions are associated with financial altruism in older adults.

Objective: Executive function abilities are important for optimal financial decision making and have been shown to decline in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Greater financial altruism has been associated with a cognitive profile characteristic of early AD that largely implicates non-executive functioning abilities. This study investigated the associations between executive functions and "blind giving" in older age. Method: One hundred and thirty-two older adults without dementia (M age = 69.6; M MMSE = 28.3) completed all-digital executive functioning tasks from the Delis-Kaplan Executive Fun
