Full-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia with dental implants.

Oral findings in patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) include complete or partial hypodontia, anodontia, loss of vertical dimension of occlusion, protuberant lips, malformed and widely spaced conical-shaped teeth, and underdeveloped alveolar ridges. These patients present a substantial challenge in dental treatment. This case report presents oral rehabilitation of a 22-year-old male patient diagnosed with ED using an implant tooth-supported telescopic partial denture at the mandible and a tooth-supported telescopic partial denture at the maxilla. Implants in the mandible were placed at the …

Mutations in GRHL2 result in an autosomal-recessive ectodermal Dysplasia syndrome.

Grainyhead-like 2, encoded by GRHL2, is a member of a highly conserved family of transcription factors that play essential roles during epit … bronchial asthma. Taken together, the features were consistent with an unusual autosomal-recessive ectodermal dysplasia syndrome. Because of consanguinity in both families, we used whole-exome sequencing to search for novel homozygous DNA variants and found GRHL2 mutations common to both families: affected subjects in one family were homozygous for c.1192T>C (p.Tyr39 …

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a felicitous approach to esthetic and prosthetic management.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disease characterized by congenital dysplasia of one or more ectodermal structure and other accessory appendages. The oral manifestations are anodontia and poor bony foundation which impairs both esthetic as well as the masticatory function. The prosthodontic management of patients with such dysplastic condition necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. This case report describes the prosthodontic oral rehabilitation of a 16 years old female pediatric patient with ectodermal dysplasia. How to cite this article: Singh T, Singh R, Singh GP, Singh JP. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia - diagnostic aids and a report of 5 cases.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare group of disorders affecting the hair, teeth, nails and sweat glands to a variable degree. There is a wide range of clinical presentation of HED. Missing teeth or abnormal tooth form may be the first indicator of the disorder. We present a case report of 5 cases of HED with their intraoral findings and their treatment plan. We also consider the various etiological factors and their clinical diagnostic aids.

Treatment with removable prosthesis in hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. A clinical case.

Ectodermal dysplasias form part of a wide range of syndromes presenting abnormal development of two or more tissues derived from the ectoderm. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a congenital syndrome, characterized by hypotrichosis (hair is sparse, fine and weak; anomalies in the skin and nails), hypohidrosis (due to the paucity of sweat glands which in turn gives rise to sweat disorders) and hypodontia (partial, and occasionally total, absence of primary and/or permanent dentition). A case of a child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with oligodontia and marked resorption of the maxill…

Implants in children with ectodermal dysplasia: a case report and literature review.

The replacement of teeth by implants is usually restricted to patients with completed craniofacial growth. Implant insertions in children or adolescents are circumvented due to several unfavorable potential effects including trauma to tooth germs, tooth eruption disorders and multidimensional restrictions of skeletal craniofacial growth. Moreover, the functional and esthetic results of the oral rehabilitation are only temporary acceptable. However, to a small number of pediatric patients suffering congenitally from severe hypodontia caused by syndromes such as ectodermal dysplasia, conventiona…

Head and neck manifestations and quality of life of patients with ectodermal dysplasia.

OBJECTIVES: Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a group of genetic disorders characterized by deficient ectodermal and mesodermal development. Studies examining resultant otolaryngologic issues are few. The objectives of this study were to delineate the head and neck manifestations and quality of life in EDs. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: For 75 individuals, comprehensive histories were taken and otolaryngologic examinations were performed, and subjects rated their otolaryngologic symptom severity. A validated quality of life instrument (SF-8) was administered. RESULTS: The majority of subjects had …

Subtotal amelia in a child with autosomal recessive hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

We report an inbred Tunisian family, in which the proband manifested signs of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, subtotal amelia, scoliosis and left renal agenesis. Two other family members had the full clinical criteria of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, characterized by deficient sweat glands, hypodontia, hypoplasia of the mucous glands, and fine hair. Nine family subjects had variable clinical expression of the disorder.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare condition characterized by abnormalities to ectodermal derived tissues although other organs or systems are frequently involved. Patients with HED can have a number of symptoms that may lead them to present to the otolaryngologist. We present a case of a 37-year-old female with HED who initially presented with nasal obstruction but then very rapidly developed stridor due to a tracheal squamous cell carcinoma. We suggest a possible association between HED and carcinoma of the upper respiratory tract that has not previously been reported.

[Anodontia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hyporeactive to heat. Effect of acitretin].

We observed an adult female patient presenting an autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia difficult to classify among the various reported forms of this disease. She had the major signs of the hidrotic type of the disease (palmo-plantar hyperkeratosis, nail and hair dystrophies, and typical sweat glands) and anodontia as reported in the hypohidrotic form of the syndrome. We evaluated the function of the sweat glands and found them hyporeactive to a heat stimulus. Most of the epithelial alterations have improved under therapy by acitretin.
