Ankle dorsiflexion deficit in the back leg is a risk factor for shoulder and elbow injuries in young baseball players.

The relationship between ankle joint function and throwing-related injuries has not been demonstrated. We hypothesized that limited ankle joint range of motion (ROM) was related to risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries in young baseball players. This 12-month prospective cohort study evaluated the age, height, weight, playing position, shoulder, elbow, and ankle function of 228 enrolled baseball players. Shoulder and elbow injuries were tracked during the season. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries among participan…

Results of excision of heterotopic new bone around the elbow in patients with head injuries. A series of 25 cases.

Twenty patients were operated upon for heterotopic ossification around the elbow of neurogenic origin following intra-cranial trauma between 1993 and 1997. They did not receive any diphosphonates or radiotherapy. Pre-operative evaluation included a CT scan with enhancement using a dye injected intravenously and 3D reconstruction. Surgery was indicated in the presence of a clinical deficit in mobility or signs (clinical or electrical) of nerve compression. The average delay between the accident and the surgery was 34 months (5 months to 9 years). Associated procedure included lengthening of the

Free muscle transplantation combined with intercostal nerve crossing for reconstruction of elbow flexion and wrist extension in brachial plexus injuries.

Complete paralysis due to traumatic brachial plexus injury is extremely difficult to treat when the injury affects whole nerve roots and when motor function fails to show any signs of recovery. Seddon has suggested that arthrodesis of the shoulder and amputation at the humerus, combined with the use of a functional upper extremity prosthesis, was the most practical procedure available. Since 1965, in cases of irreparable lesions such as complete root avulsion type injuries, we have performed direct intercostal nerve crossing to the musculocutaneous nerve without free nerve graft to achieve elb

The effect of elbow posture on biceps function at the shoulder in brachial plexus birth injuries: A computational sensitivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a brachial plexus birth injury have changes in optimal muscle length of affected muscles and diminished motion at the elbow and shoulder, impacting active shoulder elevation. The long head of the biceps, a bi-articular muscle, is of particular interest in this population due to its reduced optimal muscle length and simultaneous shortening at the shoulder and elbow during active shoulder elevation. Prior studies have shown immobilization of a joint may improve the moment-generating capacity of a biarticular muscle crossing that joint. The aim of this study was to in

A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between Lower Extremity Field Tests and Medial Elbow Injuries in Elementary School Baseball Players.

This study aimed to examine prospectively the relationship between the deep squatting test and medial elbow injuries in elementary school baseball players and to determine the usefulness of the lower extremity field test in throwing injuries. The participants were 254 players who had participated in preseason medical checkups in both 2019 and 2020 and had no problems with the 2019 medical checkups. The evaluation parameters included ultrasonography examination, physical examination, and three types of deep squatting tests. The success rate of deep squatting tests was significantly lower in the…

Virtual Rehabilitation of Elbow Flexion Following Nerve Transfer Reconstruction for Brachial Plexus Injuries Using the Single-Joint Hybrid Assisted Limb.

PURPOSE: The upper limb single-joint hybrid assistive limb (HAL), a wearable robot that can support elbow flexion and extension motions, was originally used to rehabilitate patients with stroke. We report the preliminary outcomes of serial HAL use for rehabilitation following nerve transfer (NT) for elbow flexion reconstruction in brachial plexus injuries. METHODS: Hybrid assistive limb training consisted of virtual and power training courses. Virtual training was started before HAL picked up motor unit potentials (MUPs) from the target muscle through electrodes attached to the skin overlying

Phrenic nerve transfer in the restoration of elbow flexion in brachial plexus avulsion injuries: how effective and safe is it?

OBJECTIVE: Phrenic nerve transfer has been used for treating lesions of the brachial plexus since 1970. Although, today, surgeons are more experienced with the technique, there are still widespread concerns about its effects on pulmonary function. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this procedure. METHODS: Fourteen patients with complete palsy of the upper limb were submitted to phrenic nerve transfer as part of a strategy for surgical reconstruction of their plexuses. Two patients were lost to follow-up, and 2 patients were followed for less than 2 years. O

Isolated Humeral Trochlear Fracture without Associated Elbow Injury: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated fractures of the humeral trochlea are exceedingly rare because of the trochlea's deep intra-articular position and anatomical protection from direct trauma. The articular notch formed by the olecranon and coronoid processes shields the trochlea, which also lacks direct muscular or ligamentous attachments. Such fractures typically occur in conjunction with injuries involving the capitellum or the medial and lateral condyles. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 35-year-old male who sustained an isolated trochlear fracture following a physical assault. Initial anteroposte

Elbow Dislocation with Irretrievable Rotating-Rope Injury of the Forearm: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous dislocation of the elbow, radioulnar joint and proximal radius fracture with rotary noose injury to the medial ulna tubercle is extremely rare. An emergency surgery was performed to reduce it. The radial head with the backbone was reset after two hammers were fixed, then the radial capitulum safety was fixed with a locking plate. After the ulnar instability was examined, two Kirschner wires were drilled percutaneously to fix the elbow flexion at 100° under closed reduction, and two Kirschner wires were drilled percutaneously to fix the ulnar joint. Good follow-up resul

Is Repair of a Small Coronoid Fracture Required in the Surgical Treatment of Terrible Triad Injury of the Elbow?

Background: Multiple treatment protocols have been described in literature for the treatment of terrible triad injury (TTI) of the elbow. We believe that repair of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) should be performed in preference to repair of a small coronoid fracture if the elbow is unstable after fixation/replacement of the radial head and repair of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The aim of this study is to report the outcomes of surgical treatment of patients with TTI associated with a small coronoid fracture in whom the coronoid fracture was not addressed. Methods: This study

Anterior capsule re-attachment in terrible triad elbow injury with coronoid tip fracture.

BACKGROUND: During the surgical treatment of terrible triad elbow injury (TTEI), the usefulness of re-attaching the anterior joint capsule when the coronoid tip is fractured remains unclear. The primary objective of this study was to assess potential benefits during surgery for TTEI of re-attaching the joint capsule when the coronoid tip is fractured. HYPOTHESIS: Re-attaching the anterior joint capsule in TTEI with a fractured coronoid tip improves clinical and radiological outcomes and decreases the complication and revision rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-centre retrospective stu

Risk of nerve injury during arthroscopy portal placement in the elbow joint: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroscopy has become a routine procedure now. However, placing portals is fraught with dangers of injuring the neurovascular structures around elbow. There are not enough data documenting the same amongst the Indians. We aimed to determine the relative distances of nerves around the elbow to the arthroscopy portals and risk of injury in different positions of the elbow. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six standard elbow arthroscopy portals were established in 12 cadaveric upper limbs after joint distension. Then using standard dissection techniques all the nerves around the elbow w
