Global sensitivity study for irreversible electroporation: Towards treatment planning under uncertainty.

BACKGROUND: Electroporation-based cancer treatments are minimally invasive, nonthermal interventional techniques that leverage cell permeabilization to ablate the target tumor. However, the amount of permeabilization is susceptible to the numerous uncertainties during treatment, such as patient-specific variations in the tissue, type of the tumor, and the resolution of imaging equipment. These uncertainties can reduce the extent of ablation in the tissue, thereby affecting the effectiveness of the treatment. PURPOSE: The aim of this work is to understand the effect of these treatment uncertai

Piezoelectric-Augmented Thermoelectric Ionogels for Self-Powered Multimodal Medical Sensors.

A paradigm ionogel consisting of ionic liquid (IL) and PVDF-HFP composites is made, which inherently possesses dual-function ionic thermoelectric (iTE) and piezoelectric (PE) attributes. This study investigates an innovative "PE-enhanced iTEs" effect, wherein the ionic thermopower exhibits a 58% enhancement while the ionic conductivity arises more than 2× within a PE-induced internal electric field. By harnessing these multifaceted features, fully self-powered, multimodal sensors demonstrate their superior energy conversion capabilities, which possessed minimum sensitivities of 0.13 mV kPa-1 a

Transient Deformation and Charge Evolution during Alternating Current-Electrohydrodynamic Oscillations of Confined Droplets.

This study investigates the transient electrohydrodynamic behavior of a confined, neutrally buoyant droplet subjected to a cyclic electric field, focusing on the coupled evolution of interfacial charge, deformation, and flow. Both the droplet and the surrounding medium are modeled as Newtonian, immiscible leaky-dielectric fluids under creeping-flow and small-deformation conditions. Confinement is shown to significantly dampen droplet oscillations by enhancing viscous dissipation in thin fluid gaps, restricting internal and external circulation, and increasing hydrodynamic resistance that oppos

Enhancing Iron(III) Oxide Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance Using Defect Engineering and Heterostructure Construction.

Fe2O3 is a promising semiconductor for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water decomposition. However, severe charge recombination problems limit its applications. In this study, a F-Fe2O3-x/MoS2 nanorod array photoanode was designed and prepared to facilitate charge separation. Detailed characterization and experimental results showed that F doping in Fe2O3 regulated the electronic structure to improve the conductivity of Fe2O3 and induced abundant oxygen vacancies to increase the carrier concentration and promote charge separation in bulk. In addition, the internal electric field between F-Fe2O3-x

Super-tough and self-healable all-cellulose-based electrolyte for fast degradable quasi-solid-state supercapacitor.

Recyclable and degradable supercapacitors have promising applications for a sustainable energy storage industry. Herein, we prepare a dual-physical crosslinking (DP) carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel with high-toughness, healability, and electric conductivity by integrating abundant ions into the matrix. The prepared hydrogel displays a maximum compressive fracture stress of 4.42 MPa, fast healing in five seconds, and full degradation within eight days. Moreover, the fabricated supercapacitor shows high specific capacitance (309 F g-1) and volumetric capacitance (2.60 F cm-3). The superca…

Cellulose-derived carbon scaffolds with bidirectional gradient Fe3O4 distribution: Integration of green EMI shielding and thermal management.

Cellulose papers (CPs) possess a pore structure, rendering them ideal precursors for carbon scaffolds because of their renewability. However, achieving a tradeoff between high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness and low reflection coefficient poses a tremendous challenge for CP-based carbon scaffolds. To meet the challenge, leveraging the synergistic effect of gravity and evaporation dynamics, laminar CP-based carbon scaffolds with a bidirectional gradient distribution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were fabricated via immersion, drying, and carbonization processes. The resulting carbon scaffold,

Two-Dimensional van der Waals Polar Metal MoOBr2.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) polar metals, which integrate long-range polar order and metallic conductivity, have garnered enormous interest for their extraordinary properties, including non-reciprocal charge transport and nonlinear optical effects. However, intrinsic 2D vdW polar metals remain exceedingly rare, as the dense itinerant electrons strongly screen internal electric fields and destabilize the macroscopic polarization needed for polar order. Herein, we report the discovery of MoOBr2, the first 2D vdW polar metal stacked by polar atomic layers. Single-crystal X-ray diffra

Dendritic Cell-Inspired NCNTs/HEA Architecture for Synergistic Enhancement of Low-Frequency Microwave Absorption and Thermal Conductivity.

With the flourishing trend toward miniaturization and high integration of electronic devices, materials that integrate both high thermal conductivity and efficient low-frequency electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) performance has become crucial for addressing heat accumulation and electromagnetic compatibility issue. Traditional thermally conductive EMA materials, typically fabricated by blending EMA materials with highly thermally conductive components, suffer from drawbacks such as excessive volume, high interfacial thermal resistance, and incompatibility. Herein, a cross-scale biomimetic

Optimizing Electrical Stimulation Parameters to Enhance Viability of Dental Pulp Stem Cells in Graphene-Based Scaffolds.

Tissue engineering (TE) combines cells, biomaterials, and external regulatory cues to support tissue repair and regeneration. Graphene-based scaffolds are promising TE platforms because they combine electrical conductivity, mechanical reinforcement, and cytocompatible surface properties. When paired with electrical stimulation (ES), these scaffolds may provide an electroactive microenvironment that influences stem cell behavior. However, suitable ES conditions for dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) cultured on graphene-based scaffolds remain insufficiently defined. This study examined how differen

Network-Driven Ion Transport in Robust In Situ Polymerized Electrolyte-Integrated Cathodes for Long-Life Structural Batteries in Intelligent Sensing Platforms.

The limited cycle life of solid-state lithium-ion batteries is largely attributed to the low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical strength of solid electrolytes, as well as unstable electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, a solid-state electrolyte synthesized via in situ polymerization of bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate (E2BADMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) diacrylate (PEGDA) in LiTFSI-carbonate-based electrolytes is reported, achieving high ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. By combining density functional theory (DFT) simulations and experimental validation, a previously un

Regulation of the Interfaces Between Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes and Lithium Metal Anode.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and large scale energy storage, due to their considerable energy density, low cost and long cycle life. However, traditional liquid batteries suffer from safety problems such as leakage, thermal runaway and even explosion. Part of the issues are caused by lithium dendrites puncturing the liquid electrolyte during cycling. In order to achieve the objective of higher safety and energy density, a rigid solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is proposed instead of liquid electrolyte (LE). Thereinto, sulfide SSEs

We explore influence of Mg alloying effect on electronic band structure dispersion and thermoelectric properties of tin chalcogenide materials. Based on density functional theory (DFT) within a framework of full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW), we evaluate the energy band structure and optical properties of MgxSn1-xSe (x = 6%, 12% and 18%) materials. Moreover, we extend our calculations to simulate the electrical transport properties using Boltzmann transport theory. Within the approximations employed in our calculations the theoretically predicted band energy gap va

Origami-Inspired Conductive Paper-Based Folded Pressure Sensor with Interconnection Scaling at the Crease for Novel Wearable Applications.

Drawing inspiration from origami structures, a pressure sensor was developed with unique interconnection scaling at its creases crafted on a conductive paper substrate, paving the way for advanced wearable technology. Two screen-printed conductive paper substrates were combined face-to-face, and specific folds were introduced to optimize the sensor structure. The Electrical Contact Resistance (ECR) was systematically analyzed across different fold numbers and crease gaps, revealing a notable trade-off: while increasing the number of folds expanded the sensing area, it also influenced the ECR,

Agarose/polyvinyl alcohol double-network hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing properties for moisture-electric generators and self-powered respiratory monitoring sensors.

Moisture-electric generators (MEGs) can utilize water vapor in the air to provide energy. In recent years, hydrogel-based MEGs have gradually become a research direction of great importance due to the excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of hydrogels. However, most hydrogels have poor anti-freezing properties, which greatly limits the application of MEGs. In this work, PVA/AG/AMPS/PA-LiCl (PAAP-L) hydrogels were successfully synthesized via one-pot and immersion methods using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), agarose (AG), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), phyt

The electric field distributions in anatomical head models during transcranial direct current stimulation for post-stroke rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: The lack of knowledge of the electric field distribution inside the brain of stroke patients receiving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) calls for estimating it computationally. Moreover, the impact on this distribution of a novel clinical management approach which involves secondary motor areas (SMA) in stroke rehabilitation needs to be evaluated. Finally, the differences in the electric field distributions due to gender and age need to be investigated. METHODS: This work presents the development of two different anatomical models (young adult female and elderly male) w

Seasonal atmospheric water harvesting yield and water quality using electric-powered desiccant and compressor dehumidifiers.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is an emerging technology for decentralized water supply and is proving to be viable for use in emergencies, military deployment, and sustainable industries. The atmosphere is a freshwater reservoir that contains 12,900 km3 of water, 6-fold more than the volume of global rivers. Dehumidification water harvesting technologies can be powered by solar, wind, or electric sources. Compressor/refrigerant-based dehumidifiers operate via dew point condensation and provide a cold surface upon which water vapor can condense. Conversely, desiccant-based technologies sat

Density Modulations in Active Colloidal Systems through Orthogonal Propulsion Control and Sensory Delays.

Recent advancements in active colloidal systems aim to mimic key characteristics of biological microswimmers, particularly their adaptive motility in response to environmental changes. While many approaches rely on externally imposing a variable propulsive force, achieving true autonomous and self-regulating adaptation to the environment remains limited. In this study, we take a step in this direction and develop Janus microswimmers driven by electrohydrodynamic flows that autonomously adjust their propulsion dynamics in response to varying illumination and exposure to chemical agents. Electrochemotherapy Effectiveness Loss due to Electric Field Indentation between Needle Electrodes: A Numerical Study.

Electrochemotherapy is an anticancer treatment based on applying electric field pulses that reduce cell membrane selectivity, allowing chemotherapy drugs to enter the cells. In parallel to electrochemotherapy clinical tests, in silico experiments have helped scientists and clinicians to understand the electric field distribution through anatomically complex regions of the body. In particular, these in silico experiments allow clinicians to predict problems that may arise in treatment effectiveness. The current work presents a metastatic case of a mast cell tumor in a dog. Low-frequency alternating electric field superchilling mitigates ice crystal growth and preserves taste quality in Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus).

This study investigated the effects of low-frequency alternating electric field-assisted superchilling (ESF) on the quality of Asian swamp eels. Compared to conventional superchilling (SF), ESF treatment significantly reduced ice crystal size, decreasing the equivalent diameters and cross-sectional areas by 19.6% and 35.5%, respectively, at day 8, while maintaining more regular crystal morphology. ESF also effectively suppressed the conversion of immobilized water to free water, delayed umami loss, and mitigated bitterness development, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and electronic
