Seizures and electroencephalography findings in 61 patients with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) cause neurodevelopmental abnormalities. However, publications about epilepsy and electroencephalographic features are scarce. In this study, we prospectively performed electroencephalography (EEG) and brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in 61 patients with diagnosis of FASD. One patient had multiple febrile seizures with normal EEGs. Fourteen children showed EEG anomalies, including slow background activity and interictal epileptiform discharges, focal and/or generalized, and 3 of them had epilepsy. In one patient, seizures were first detected during t…

Multiscale entropy analysis of electroencephalography during sleep in patients with Parkinson disease.

Sleep disorders are frequently seen in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), including rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder and periodic limb movement disorder. However, knowledge about changes in non-REM sleep in patients with PD is limited. This study explored the characteristics of electroencephalography (EEG) during sleep in patients with PD and non-PD controls. We further conducted multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis to evaluate and compare the complexity of sleep EEG for the 2 groups. There were 9 patients with PD (Hoehn-Yahr stage 1 or 2) and 11 non-PD controls. All participants und…

The prognostic value of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Diagnosis of perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and early prediction neurological outcome is important and difficult. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) for abnormal neurodevelopment outcome in a neonate with HIE. METHODS: A total of 90 neonates > 32 gestational age (GA) with HIE were enrolled prospectively. All neonates with HIE were categorized into three grades according to the Sarnat and Sarnat clinical scoring system (mild HIE, moderate HIE and severe HIE). aEEG traces were recorde…

Bilateral invasive electroencephalography in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex: a path to surgery?

OBJECT: Many children with epilepsy and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have multiple tubers on MR imaging and poorly localized/lateralized video electroencephalography (EEG) findings. Given the long-term risks associated with frequent seizures and multiple antiepileptic drugs, along with improved success in identifying focal epileptogenic zones in patients with multifocal lesions, the authors used bilateral intracranial EEG to lateralize the epileptogenic zone in patients with nonlateralizable noninvasive preoperative evaluations. METHODS: A retrospective analysis from January 1, 1998, to J…

Electroencephalography and single photon emission computed tomography in dementia: a comparative study.

A series of elderly patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (AD), multi-infarct dementia (MID) and functional (non-organic) psychiatric illness (major depressive disorder) were selected according to DSM-III-R criteria and received: a battery of cognitive tests, EEG and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) using 99mTc HMPAO. The EEG and SPECT scans were examined independently of the clinical data. The former were divided into two abnormal categories, those showing AD type change and vascular change respectively, and a normal group. The SPECT scans were classified as follows: a SP

[Musical-verbal hallucinations and their correlation with electroencephalography and PET findings. Case report].

A case is reported of an organic auditory hallucinosis and depressive episode in a man aged 52. A new finding is the correlation of the musical hallucinosis to a central nervous disorder as shown by pathological sphenoidal EEG and 18FDG-PET-examination and not to acquired peripheral hearing deficit as often reported before.

Investigation of Emotion Regulation Skills in Migraine Patients Using Electroencephalography (EEG) Method.

Emotion regulation is essential for maintaining daily functioning. Previous studies indicate that individuals with migraine have difficulty identifying emotions and exhibit higher alexithymia scores. The P300 and N400 components, associated with attention and semantic processes, provide insights into neural changes during emotion regulation. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between migraine and emotion regulation by evaluating the P300 and N400 responses obtained during emotion regulation tasks. Participants included individuals with and without a migraine diagnosis. Th

Stereo-electroencephalography practices among pediatric and adult epilepsy surgeons: a survey study.

OBJECTIVE: Stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) was introduced in Europe and has since been widely adopted throughout the United States during the past decade. Given the short history of its use in the United States, most neurosurgeons have not received dedicated sEEG training during residency. Instead, the majority learn sEEG techniques and practices as faculty and attendings. Because of the positively reported safety and efficacy profile of sEEG, it is a valuable tool for discerning epileptogenic foci. However, there are no consensus statements regarding surgical techniques and common intra-/…

Open multi-center intracranial electroencephalography dataset with task probing conscious visual perception.

We introduce an intracranial EEG (iEEG) dataset collected as part of an adversarial collaboration between proponents of two theories of consciousness: Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory. The data were recorded from 38 patients undergoing intracranial monitoring of epileptic seizures across three research centers using the same experimental protocol. Participants were presented with suprathreshold visual stimuli belonging to four different categories (faces, objects, letters, false fonts) in three orientations (front, left, right view), and for three durations (0

Altered electroencephalography-based source functional connectivity in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the neurophysiological markers of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), we performed electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with GAD and assessed lagged phase synchronization (LPS), a measure of brain functional connectivity (FC). METHODS: Cortical EEG sources were modelled by exact low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA). Graph theory analyses were applied to undirected and weighted networks obtained by LPS to explore the FC differences between patients with GAD and controls. The association between the abnormal parameters and disease symptomatology wa…

Cognitive outcome after stereo-electroencephalography-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) is being used incrementally in the invasive diagnosis of epilepsy. There is currently a lack of information regarding the potential cognitive consequences of the extended use of this technique. This work describes, for the first time, the cognitive outcomes after RFTC in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), evaluated longitudinally and using a control group. METHODS: Forty-eight adult patients with drug-resistant unilateral TLE (30 RFTC-treated patients and 18 controls) were evaluated using a…

An intelligent neuromarketing system for predicting consumers' future choice from electroencephalography signals.

Neuromarketing utilizes Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technologies to provide insight into consumers responses on marketing stimuli. In order to achieve insight information, marketers spend about $400 billion annually on marketing, promotion, and advertisement using traditional marketing research tools. In addition, these tools like personal depth interviews, surveys, focus group discussions, etc. are expensive and frequently criticized for failing to extract actual consumer preferences. Neuromarketing, on the other hand, promises to overcome such constraints. In this work, an EEG-based neuro
