Sixty-three cell smears from oral mucosa were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Among them, smears from ten healthy controls showed three kinds of cells: flat (superficial) cells with linear anastomosing microridges and microvilli; polygonal (intermediate) cells with well-defined crests between their faces and numerous microvilli; and round (parabasal) cells entirely covered by microvilli. Hyperplastic carotid bodies from an 80-year-old woman with sustained systemic hypertension were examined ultrastructurally and compared with those from six normal subjects. Hyperplasia involved both elongated sustentacular and Schwann's cells, both of which were more numerous than normal. They formed concentric whorls around a diminished core of chief cells. The development of tendolipomatosis has been studied both by light and scanning electron microscopy in the tendons of healthy persons killed in accidents. Lipid cells are rarely seen in the intact tendon. In the early stages of tendolipomatosis lipid cells are found deep and singly but in the later phases lipocytes are seen to disrupt the continuity of collagen fibres and tendon bundles and so reduce the strength of the tendon.

We investigated an outbreak of illness in electronics plant workers. Questionnaire data revealed that 98 employees experienced symptoms, including light- headedness , headache, sleepiness, and numbness/tingling of the face or extremities. An electron microscopic study of the cap areas of several pterygia shows the presence of active fibroblasts in the natural tissue planes surrounding Bowman's layer. The hypothesis is advanced that the fibroblasts originate in the limbal connective tissue. They advance in the cornea above and below Bowman's membrane, destroying the latter and a variable amount of superficial corneal stroma.

Nidation of gallstones by inorganic or organic Ca salts was studied in 336 consecutive cases by SEM/EDXA and additional methods (X-radiography, X-diffraction, IR spectroscopy). Impairment of electron transport was studied in rat liver sonicated submitochondrial particles. The most susceptible portion was located from NADH dehydrogenase to coenzyme Q. Tetrachloroethylene increased the Michaelis constant (Km) and decreased the maximum velocity (Vmax) of cytochrome c reduction by NADH-cytochrome c reductase. The results suggest that tetrachloroethylene does not represent a specific inhibitor of the particular carrier but decreased the electron flow at the susceptible portion in the mitochondrial inner membrane.

Cochlear otosclerosis, in the histopathological sense, is not uncommon but remains a clinical enigma. Similarly the aetiology of otospongiosis has remained obscure. Nevertheless the enzymatic concept of the initiation and mechanism of the underlying process has been recognized and confirmed together with the essential function of the matrix vesicles forming the site of primary enzymatic calcification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is an invaluable tool for studying the surface morphology of isolated blood cells. We have used a simple preparative technique for SEM to study the erythrocytes from a case of Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anaemia type II and the leucocytes from healthy individuals or patients with leukaemia or lymphoma. This rapid and inexpensive technique for fixation and dehydration of blood cells was found to be equally reliable for obtaining micrographs of healthy or diseased leucocytes or erythrocytes.

We examined an eye with melanomalytic glaucoma by quantitative aqueous perfusion, light and electron microscopy. Facility of outflow was markedly diminished from normal in vivo and in vitro. The trabecular meshwork was heavily laden on its surface and in the intertrabecular spaces with macrophages. Many of these cells appeared to be wandering macrophages, while some appeared to be detached, phagocytic trabecular endothelial cells.

The lesions of mycosis fungoides are radiosensitive and because extensive areas of the body are usually involved, the treatment of choice is with the electron beam. Since 1971, a fractionation scheme of weekly doses for irradiation of the entire skin surface has been practiced with a 6 MeV linear accelerator that generates 3.5 MeV electrons.
