Eight subjects participated on three occasions in a study investigating the effect of a 30 minute daytime nap opportunity on alertness/sleepiness. The baseline condition was a normal home sleep (7.5 hours, with bedtime at 2300 hours). Sleep during the other two conditions was between 2400 hours and 0400 hours. During one of the two 4-hour conditions, a short nap was allowed (between 1045 hours and 1115 hours). Self-ratings of sleepiness/alertness (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale) were recorded every hour. We videotaped the eye movements of syncope in 25 healthy volunteers who induced fainting by hyperventilation and Valsalva maneuver on a tilt table. In an additional three subjects, syncope was similarly induced during horizontal sinusoidal oscillation on a rotating chair while eye movements were recorded by electro-oculogram. Fourteen of 25 subjects experienced syncope on the tilt table. A 60 year-old woman complaining of diplopia presents an ocular motility disturbance mimicking internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Idiopathic dermatomyositis is diagnosed by the help of clinical, biological, electrophysiological and histological data. The outcome is favorable under corticotherapy. Ocular muscle involvement is rare in dermatomyositis. An overlap syndrome with another auto-immune disorder like myasthenia should be excluded in this kind of manifestation.

We determined whether the apneic threshold after active hyperventilation was different in rapid-eye-movement (REM) vs. non-REM (NREM) sleep. An electro-oculographic study has been performed in 11 patients affected by hereditary degenerative ataxias (5 Friedreich's ataxias, 4 olivopontocerebellar atrophies and 2 late onset cerebellar ataxias). Electrooculographic records were obtained during saccades, pursuit movements and fixed gaze. Saccadic latency, saccadic speed and morphologic features were studied. In Friedreich's ataxia ocular motility was less accurate than in olivopontocerebellar atrophy and in late onset cerebellar ataxia.

Narcolepsy, a sleep-wake disorder of unknown cause, has been reported as occurring in the pediatric population, but only two reports of cases in the literature have included polysomnographic data on children with narcolepsy. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a complaint characterizing many disorders of the wakefulness--sleep cycle. This paper addresses the complaint of sleepiness objectively by an attempt to differentiate a group of control subjects from a group of patients with unambiguous narcolepsy. A single-flash ERG and an EOG were performed in four cases of fundus heterotopicus. While the EOG responses showed a normal light and dark adaptation, the ERG registered a subnormal a- and b-wave, corresponding to the extent of the medial ectasia. Where hemeralopia was present, the ERG showed a monophasic a-wave and a markedly reduced b-wave. That means that in addition to the simple fundus heterotopicus, there is also a form with several clinical characteristics in which a hemeralopia is adaptometrically and electroretinographically demonstrable.

Continuous recordings were made of oxygen consumption (VO2) and EEG, EMG, and EOG during two nights of sleep for 20 men who were between 19 and 63 yr. old. There was a linear decrease in overnight oxygen consumption with age, even though the older men slept less and woke more often than the younger ones. On the first night, VO2 was higher, and sleep stages less like normal than on the second. Abduction saccadic movement slowed to either side without any limitation in the end position occurred in a patient. This ocular motor abnormality constituted a mirror image of the well-known internuclear ophthalmoplegia of abduction. Intermuclear ophthalmoplegia of either type demonstrates that a lesion between the center for conjugate gaze and the ocular motor nuclei can impair phasic activity of the eye muscles without reducing their tonic function.
