Quantitation of serum immunoglobulin M, G, A, D and E levels was carried out in Malaysians with Brugia malayi infections. Results showed highly elevated levels of IgM and IgE as well as moderately elevated levels of IgG. These were most significant in patients with tropical pulmonary eosinophilia or elephantiasis. Serum IgE levels were extremely high in microfilaraemic patients (6,060 +/- 3,958 IU ml) probably due to a constant antigenic stimulation by dead and dying microfilariae.

A case of transplacental transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae is reported in endemic are of Bauchi State, Nigeria. The diagnosis was based on the history of illness, clinical symptoms, age of the child and presence of sheathed microfilariae of nocturnal periodic form of W. bancrofti in the peripheral blood films. Also the night blood sample collected from the child's mother revealed mf of W. bancrofti in addition to the unilateral elephantiasis of the hindlimb. The implication of this observation is stressed.

Reduced lymphocyte transformation to Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae excretory-secretory antigen and Con A were observed in clinical filarial patients. Pre-incubation of normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells with sera from filarial patients with clinical manifestations such as hydrocele and elephantiasis suppressed Con A induced responses. Effect of fractionated clinical filarial serum on Con A induced lymphocyte transformation showed that the inhibitory activity was associated with high molecular weight serum fraction.

Lymphatic filariasis, in the Archipelago of Vanuatu, is due to Wuchereria bancrofti. The vector is Anopheles farauti, endophilic mosquito, which transmits also malaria. The level of endemicity was very high in the beginning of this century (microfilariae in blood: 60.9%, elephantiasis: 21%), and has dramatically decline now by detection and treatment of sick people (70 cases in 1986), mass chimioprophylaxis and protection against the vectors. But these actions must be continued to obtain the eradication of filariasis in the Vanuatu.

Tuberculosis of the vulva is very rare. It is found in about 0.2% of the cases of genital tract tuberculosis. It usually presents as small shallow ulcers and multiple sinus tracts or rarely as elephantiasis of vulva. Except for very rare cases of primary tuberculosis in the vulva, it is usually associated with tuberculosis elsewhere in the body leading to secondary tuberculosis. Here, we report a case of secondary vulval tuberculosis which presented as a vulval mass in a 40-year-old female patient. The rarity of this presentation in the female genital tract is emphasized.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the caring for patients with lymphedema/chronic filariasis elephantiasis in Huaiyin District.
METHODS: The chronic filariasis care sites were established and the medical workers provided the guidance regularly to patients for their self-cares.
RESULTS: Through the caring for patients with chronic filariasis, their symptoms alleviated obviously, and the symptom frequency showed a significant downward trend.
CONCLUSION: The caring for the chronic filariasis patients can alleviate the symptoms and improve the quality of life.

Filarial worms are nematodes that dwell in the subcutaneous tissues and lymphatics of human hosts. In India, filariasis is predominantly caused by a species of nematode called Wuchereria bancrofti. The disease is transmitted through the bite of blood sucking mosquitoes. The salient clinical feature of the disease is lymphangitis leading to elephantiasis of the legs, arms, scrotum and breast. Oral or perioral involvement is very rare. We report a case of filariasis which was diagnosed after biopsy of an innocuous cheek nodule.

Inguinal lymphonodal metastases of an adenocarcinoma were diagnosed in a 40-year-old patient by ultrasound guided puncture. The leading symptom was elephantiasis preferentially of the right lower extremity. In addition, atypical mycobacteriosis was detected later on. The causal gastric cancer had not been identified during two years until the fourth gastroscopy assisted by endoscopic ultrasonography revealed the lesion. No regional lymph node metastases were found while distant metastases in terms of inguinal lymph nodes were already present.
